Cherish Your Country

In the 70s, in Poland, there was a magazine for teens called 'Brytania'. It was a bimonthly mag, actually published and  printed in the UK. Beautifully published , chalky paper, great pics, the articles about young people in Great Britain, my peers, but in the 70s British Isles could have been in another galaxy..I lived in a communist country. I couldn't go abroad..it was so unfair.

The magazine was quite expensive and I had a subscription ,it was a present from my parents, they knew how I was interested in everything English..In every issue was a short English lesson, articles about music, cinema, theatre, sport and about life in the UK, occasional articles. I remember an issue on Silver Jubilee, and Keep Britain Tidy campaign, but not from the year when David Cassidy was involved.

David Cassidy's contribution in the 'Keep Britain Tidy' campaign in 1973 made a great impact on many, many people , in fact on a whole generation. A lot was written and talked about it. Girls all over the country were ripping the advertising hoardings because it was a giant poster of David with a slogan 'Cherish Your Country'. When he came to England in March 1973 to give concerts in Manchester and London, David Cassidy also took part in the BBC  very popular programme 'Blue Peter.' It was aired on BBC One on March 26th. David read the name of the winner of the competition for the best poster design for the campaign. He was to meet with the winner (her name was Alison White), but he had to fly home earlier. During the programme he got a lot of presents from fans, also presents for his dog, and a petition signed by thousands, begging him to come to Scotland next time.

The same year David Cassidy also did some significant charity work in his native country. For the second time he was named as the Young Chairman of the Special Olympic programme, he taped some radio and tv appeals as part of the fund rising efforts. His involvement was very highly appreciated. In July 1973 (20-21) California Special Olympic State Games with 3000 young participants were held in LA, at the U.C.L.A. stadium and The Santa Monica College swimming pool. For two days David  was in audience and gave prizes.

Being so busy he always had time to help, and it's worth remembering that at the time charity work wasn't so populae among celebrities as it is now.
