Let Him Shine..

'Thank you. For all of it. For all the decades. I don't think I do. I know I love you '  . David Cassidy, March4, 2017 We too..We know, and we knew this from the start. So difficult to explain to strangers, not fans. 'Why do you write about David Cassidy? He was just a pretty boy, a singer, famous only for a while. A teen idol..Why?'. Sometimes I say - 'It's just a hobby. People have strangest hobbies than mine'. But this is not just a hobby. Why we still care..because we do. With each year there are less David's fans, for many different reasons, but there are still quite a lot of us all over the world. Of course it's also a generation thing. David was our own idol and we were teens in the 70s. We aged with him. Some of us became wives, husbands, parents, grandparents, widowers or divorcees..We've faced all those problems which life brings, no matter if you are poor, rich, beautiful or ugly, a librarian or a teen idol.. old age will get eve

David Cassidy and Bravo..

Image
A fellow fan and a friend, wonderful Araceli Ramirez from Spain posted yesterday a video I've never seen before. I knew about that programme earlier, and there are screen shots on the DC Official website, but no video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0k-U77UEwxw Wow..that hair, everybody looked like that in the 80s, even me..It's amazing that all the time something new appears..And that video has made me think about the importance of Bravo in the 70s. We lived behind the Iron Curtain, Poland was a communist country, so we didn't have Western mgazines.or any newspapers or books. Some western music was played on our radio, but I didn't know how my fav singers looked like. It changed  a little bit in the second part of the 70s when they loosened our leash a bit. Some music programmes appeared on our tv, some stars were invited to take part in them , ABBA and 10 CC for example , but that lack of choice was very depressing. For many Polish teens  in the 70 the German Bravo w

David Cassidy's Broadway debut. I can imagine how happy and thrilled he was. And proud. Jack debuted on Broadway when he was 15, but for many years he was just a chorus member, he had his first real role in 1952 (in  'South Pacific') when he was 25. David's character wasn't very important, but how happy he must have been. I think (I don't know of course) also because he became a part of a team. I've read many times that DC was always so professional, that  from the start was a serious actor who worked with and for his co-stars. He never was a prima donna.. Everything looked just great and exciting. The stage, Broadhurst Theatre, one of the oldest on Broadway, opened in 1917 with a capacity of 1186. located at 44th Street. I can imagine DC's excitement after those difficult months, it was a moment of sheer happiness when he got that role of Billy. " I telephoned my employers and declared I'd never be going back to that hated job (..) Keep my cheq

January 2, 1969 to January 6, 1969. Closed after 4 performances.  There were more if we add the previews, but of course it was such a huge disappointment for that young boy, David Cassidy. He was still 18 years old. When DC at last graduated in 1968, I write 'at last' because he again had to make a last session of summer school, he moved to New York. Jack wanted to help him, paid for David's first professional photographs, asked Ruth Aarons to take care of his son. He found him a job, and I have to say that it was a great thing to do. Of course we know how DC complained about it..but such boring job could be very ..inspiring. I had once a very boring summer job myself and it  had an amazing influence on my learning. Jack gave him a place to live, if David really wanted to become a successful, serious actor, he had to work very hard. And he did.  Maybe a little break with a song about money and work from nine to five, something DC never experienced.. https://www.youtube.co

I Just Wanna Make You Happy / Wes Farrell, Bobby Hart

Image
It's incredible but I wrote my first blog more than 1 year ago, on December 20th 2020. Since then I've published 258 posts, more than 46 000 views. From all over the world. Today for example I've had a reader from a new country, Ghana..I've been thinking for a good title for today's blog during my morning walk, and I've thought that "I Just Wanna Make You Happy' from the first David Cassidy solo album, 'Cherish', released in 1972, would be perfect. Only back at home I've realized that it's not such an original idea, because  a fragment of that song was already used more than a year ago for one  of the tribute plaques at The Phoenix Garden. This is truly David Cassidy's place in London, a  magical, secret garden, so wonderful and quiet, so close to busy Charing Cross Rd, and believe me ..you can feel magic there. David Cassidy would have been happy that he is remembered in such a place..He performed in 'Blood Brothers' at Th

A True Superstar..

That was the title of the article that appeared in Record Mirror, on June 1st, 1974. Wrote by John Beattie. About DC White Stadium Concert. It started  - 'What a shame...Cassidy has gone..'  While I was on holiday a lot of the Record Mirror's articles from 1974 and 1975 were posted on the website. Record Mirror was a British weekly music newspaper between 1954 and 1991. Maybe not as famous as New Musical Express, but of course in the 70s I only heard about them, and had no chance to read .So, at last. I've been reading for a few days  and still  haven't finished. It's so.. just can't find words, so moving and touching. Those charts for example, British and American, many songs I remember so well. Great voices, so  many talented people. Truly, the 70 was an amazing decade. Maybe just one song, not exactly from 1975, but John Miles died on December 5th. It was also a great hit in Poland.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PF6mk2Sq4yY This is such a wonderful son

Crazy Over You / David Cassidy

Image
Yes, it's an amazing  song, so full of passion and desire..why it wasn't released on the David Cassidy self-titled album in 1990 ? For example instead of not so exciting, truly speaking average 'All Because Of You' (co-wrote by Sue Shifrin)  And what's more 'All Because Of You' was Cher's hit in 1989, so why and what for?? We will never know.. But it was a mistake, because  'Crazy Over You'.. there is something in it, this song is so addictive, it begins seemingly so calmly and innocently, but little by little..you can't stop listening..David Cassidy at his best. Great  voice, powerful and sexy, intensity and emotion..a hit rock number.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AK5AQzoRG4 The lyrics of that song has been added to the David Cassidy Official Website recently. And you have no idea that it actually took a lot of emails and a lot of work before it was possible. It only looks so easy to do, I've tried but failed, and at last Doreen Wal

Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame

Image
This is something fans talk about from time to time. What  to do to get David Cassidy inducted into The RRHOF. There have been petitions etc. even that the committee doesn't have a good opinion (for many reasons). The Mamas And Papas for example was inducted earlier than Deep Purple.  Of course despite its name the Hall honors artists of all genres. Bee Gees, Madonna, Blondie , ABBA , The Cars, Heart, and Hall & Oates are also inducted. And there is a list of those who were nominated but haven't been selected so far. Kate Bush, Iron Maiden, Los Lobos. Of course it's no use writing to them that DC recorded rock music. They know about it. Not only  Jann Wenner..  There were some artists. who didn't want to be inducted, Sex Pistols for example. I like what Michael Nesmith once said :' I can see that HOF (Hall Of Fame) is a private enterprise (..) The inductees appear to be chosen at the owner's pleasure.'. Yes. Let's listen to The Monkees. This song was

Susan Dey

Image
Susan Dey's birthday was on December 10th, she is 69 years old now. Difficult to imagine, for us she is Laurie Partridge forever, Keith's younger sister, who tended to annoy him so many times. But if necessary they were so loyal to each other. The chemistry between the members of that family was real and it's one of the reasons that TPF is still such a joy to watch. And  great acting. (Of course the main reason is David..) Susan was a beautiful teenage model without any acting experience when she got the role of the eldest Shirley's daughter. Laurie is very pretty, sweet, innocent and  sensible. Even stiff compared with Keith and Danny. It's only from Season 2 that Susan Dey could show that she also had a comedy talent. Episode 22, one of my fvourite, 'The Partridge Papers'. Susan, David and Danny must have had a lot of fun doing it..Temporarily trespassing.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3W5aHlu_B14 Truly a very talented actress. And life wasn't easy

The David Cassidy Virtual Fan Club by Barb Collentine

I'm so proud and honored that I can publish that amazing story on my blog. The story of  love and friendship, the story of The David Cassidy Virtual Fan Club wrote especially for us by Barb Collentine The David Cassidy Virtual Fan Club by Barb Collentine There were many things born out of the recent pandemic that began in 2020 and found its way through most of 2021. Some of those things were good. The David Cassidy Virtual Fan Club was one of those good things. After David Cassidy passed away in November of 2017, longtime fan of David’s and Long Island New York resident Karen Ranieri decided to hold a Tribute walk throughout New York City in honor of David on his first birthday after his passing– April 12, 2018. Karen posted on Facebook and about 8 people from the New York City area attended– all strangers who had never met before. I was one of those strangers; a David Cassidy fan my entire life now feeling bereft and lost and alone as that first April 12th crept closer. Living in

I've just returned from a very strange holiday and DC played an important part in it. I left on December 4th for 2 weeks in Egypt. On my own and without Internet. One of my fav places on Earth. The Red Sea. Great hotel, fantastic weather. At first I felt like having a jet lag, so sleepy , everything was so colourless, dull..and I remembered an interview with Maura Rossi. That 63 year old DC couldn't stand dull people and dull situations. He needed excitement..At the time when I read it I thought to myself, 'Poor David, old and unhealthy, what kind of excitement you could have after such life'. But..maybe that was the problem..Maybe I just stopped being a middle aged optimistic and laughing person and became grumpy, unhappy and old. It was like music suddenly stopped. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0u8Y15xKQU It wasn't a nice thought, after all DC found only pain and emptiness, but it was just a beginning. On the third day I discovered that I had quite a serious ne

It was a great hit when David was 15 years old. The Lovin' Spoonful's debute single from their debiut album. #9 on the Billboard. I don't know, The Lovin' Spoonful,  I was too young for them, and truly speaking it's been a surprise for me when I've read today the group was inducted into The RRHoF in 2000. In the 70s Shaun had a hit with a cover of 'Do You Believe In Magic', # 31 in 1978. And DC made a cover too, and released it on his Then And Now album in the USA, in 2002. The fragment of this song was used in Mervyn Christmas advert.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXbJ6hH43Wo Very nice. and it's happened that yesterday I was writing a synopsis for that TPF's episode in which Partridge Family appeared in chickens outfits..and even dressed as a rooster David looked great. Anyway I started watching TPF's and David's commercials and had a lot of fun.. According to the website, in the 60s, a show couldn't go on the air if there was no

December. Tell Me It's Not True / William Russell

December. Even when David was a kid..' Generally, Christmas was one of the saddest times in my childhood because from the time my parents split up until I started seeing my dad in California, both my father and mother were gone.' (David Cassidy: Could It Be Forever?, 2007) And both of them died in December, Jack, 45 years ago on the 12th, and Evelyn in 2012, on the 23th. DC wrote about that horrible day, December 12, 1976 in his autobiography, and I've written about this tragedy a few times this year. Parents and children. Father and son. Jack and David. They didn't have a chance to understand each other and forgive, build a relationship on an adult level. Maybe it could have never been possible. Poor DC was left with all that pain  forever, for the rest of his days.  It was  an amazing coincidence ."Shaun Cassidy :' I associate my New York experience (performing with DC on Broadway in Blood Brothers) with our dad and he was very succesful on Broadway, he won a

Frozen Noses / David Cassidy

We have already quite a lot of snow in Poland (I'm not a fan of it), but what a great opportunity to play that song. So wonderful and magical, a real gem..Makes me think about the time..when only love was important..not weather conditions or the lack of money, so  '..and though they both shiver neither one cares..' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWkgbGip3s4 'There is a story behind every song that I wrote'. DC's own songs, not those he co-wrote,  but songs  he wrote both the music and lyrics all by himself.. So what he was writing about? Love. Heartache. There were millions in love with him, but DC wrote songs about how unhappy in love he was..'Two Time Loser', a teen idol and his lonely nights. And this live version is absolutely amazing, better than a little bit slower and more pompous recorded one. This is a very good song, sincere and moving. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2mqmBPVmMU&t=4s 'The first song I ever wrote and recorded on my own
