Susan Dey

Susan Dey's birthday was on December 10th, she is 69 years old now. Difficult to imagine, for us she is Laurie Partridge forever, Keith's younger sister, who tended to annoy him so many times. But if necessary they were so loyal to each other. The chemistry between the members of that family was real and it's one of the reasons that TPF is still such a joy to watch. And  great acting. (Of course the main reason is David..)

Susan was a beautiful teenage model without any acting experience when she got the role of the eldest Shirley's daughter. Laurie is very pretty, sweet, innocent and  sensible. Even stiff compared with Keith and Danny. It's only from Season 2 that Susan Dey could show that she also had a comedy talent. Episode 22, one of my fvourite, 'The Partridge Papers'. Susan, David and Danny must have had a lot of fun doing it..Temporarily trespassing..

Truly a very talented actress. And life wasn't easy for her, her mother died when Susan was 8, started her modelling career while still at school,  battled anorexia during TPF's days (also later). I read that she weighed 92 pounds (42kg) at one point. When I was taking screen shots for 'Days Of Acne And Roses', (it was aired in November 1971), Susan's pics were scary, it was obvious that also her hair were falling out.

At the time anorexia was still a taboo topic. She said in 1998 " It grew (anorexia) from the stress of being a very visible 17- year-old at a time of growing focus on independent women - and on the sticklike model Twiggy. At that age you feel like an adult but you are not an adult and society does not treat you as an adult. One of the choices you do have is what you eat and what you don't eat. Also the sexual revolution started at the time and when you are anorexic you've got the body of a man so you don't have a lot to deal with.' ( Joy Mathews : 'Susan Dey, Light- Years From The Child Star', The Washington Post, Oct 5, 1989)

Yes, Susan had a very impressive career, not only on tv. I don't know why she resigned in 2004, just 52. She is a very private person, someone with a lot of problems, sensitive and vulnerable, but also someone who always finds courage to fight for a right cause, an introvert but so full of life. I'd love to have an opportunity to talk with Susan Dey, and not about David Cassidy.

Susan Dey played some very memorable characters during her career. But for me first of all she is the perfect, the best Jo March ever. She makes me smile and she makes me cry  while watching this tv adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's classic. It was made in 1978..and Meredith Baxter played Meg March..Can you believe it ..what a coincidence..Great acting - Greer Garson, Robert Young, Dorothy McGuire, Ann Dusenberry and William Shatner (yes !) as a sensational Prof. Bhaer.

If  you haven't seen  this version of 'Little Women' , maybe you will find some time now..I highly recommend it.
