It Should Have Been Me / William Stevenson, Norman Withfield/

I can imagine how..no, I can't, how many girls cried out..IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ME! when they heard that David Cassidy had got married on April 3rd , 1977 in Las Vegas. And the song ? This is the case (in my opinion) that covers are sometimes better than an original. So first great Gladys Knight's version from the 60s         https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paHNPIXOXks I read about it too, because his bride, Kay Lenz was in 'Rich Man, Poor Man' and everybody watched it on tv.  We had just two national channels, which broadcast from 5pm to midnight, there was no choice. So it was on the news in Poland too. I thought that it was obvious, the most beautiful man married the most beautiful woman, I thought Kay was so pretty. I really wasn't sorry, it all happened in a different world behind the Iron Curtain, we had more serious problems, political prisoners, troubles with getting a lot of things, sugar coupons.  Of course, I didn't care about sugar or even prisoners (

I've  seen something magical today, just returned home, it's 11pm and instead going to sleep , I'm writing this post. 2 weeks ago quite unexpectedly our theatres were allowed to open, a kind of  experiment. The same day I bought a ticket for 'Romeo and Juliet' ,Sergei Prokofiev's ballet..It's not a new performance , I saw it 5 or 6 years ago..Here is the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dZwi1sPYgs David Cassidy and ballet.Yes, there is a connection .For the last 10 years I used to go for a ballet performance to our Grand Theatre (one of the biggest in Europe) at least twice a year, I'm a huge ballet fan. I had a ticket for a new premiere last March, but, you know. Tonight..it was strange , only 50% of audience and everyone in a mask..but to listen to that wonderful music live and to watch our National Polish Ballet's  dancers again..they were just fantastic, even better than before , they were so happy to perform again..While driving home I

The members of my family (with one exception) are not very interested in David Cassidy. Of course they know something about him, whether they like it or not, but it is my hobby so to speak, and I don't force them to listen to the David's music. But once I've shown my mum one video.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhIl93zAuJU She was speechless for a while. 'This is David Cassidy?? So...beautiful?? It can't be live..Impossible..What a voice..And Casablanca??'  I had my 5 minutes, it's not  easy to impress my mother, but that time she just couldn't find words, couldn't  believe it, she'd thought that David sang different kind of music. But this is a problem with David, he could sing everything and when someone, who doesn't know his music asks me to play one DC's song, I don't know what to do, what to play..'Tomorrow' ?, 'New York City Life'? 'Daydreamer'? or 'Rock Me Baby'? Each time as like different

Cherish, Part 3. The Book

Image
At first it was exciting, fame overnight, interviews, photo sessions, money , girls following him everywhere..waiting outside the studio and his house ..trying to touch him, girls willing to do anything for him ,  fainting or sqeaking at the sight of  their idol... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPzLjE7Fvz4 Some girls were agressive, some  obsessed by him ,they wrote  strange letters, there were fans who moved to Los Angeles to be near David, he was mobbed , he was hurt several times. Security on tours and in every day life became a serious problem , he didn't think only about his own safety but also about his fans'. David felt trapped and really frustrated that fans loved not him but the image which was created for them. It didn't help that he was also a manipulator, it was his job , he had a contract , he wore those skintight jumpsuits, knew what was expected from him by audience and people who paid him and made money on him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTppP88xhhY

Cherish, Part 2. The album

Image
David Cassidy's first solo album, released in the US in February 1972 (#15, 23 weeks on chart) , in the UK  in March - #2  in May - 44 weeks on chart.  I've already written about some songs from that album, but more real classics left.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBKaQ1RKY-8 Tony Romeo's masterpiece, it's just scary how much this song is about David..Watching those pics from Sweden made me think about how hard David worked , especially in 1971, the year he recorded 'Cherish'. Yes, it was 50 years ago..So..let's take a trip back in time.. February - TPF 'Up To Date' album is released - #3 in April - 53 weeks on chart, 2 singles in top 10 ; March 26th the first concert in Seattle (34  concerts in 1971), in April takes part in 'This Is Yor Life' with Shirley Jones; on July12th after months of pain and dieting  has a life-saving operation, returns to playing concerts in the middle of August (performing with a surgical belt) , his dog Ricky

Cherish, Part 1. The song/ Terry Kirkman/

In April 1985 I fell in love with the American jazz guitarist  Pat Metheny. Jazz was always very popular in Poland, and even in the 80s a lot of great jazz musicians performed in Warsaw. I was at his concert at Warsaw's awful and huge Palace of Culture, with my husband and our best friend, we'd met in the 70's at school,  we loved music, that friend played in a punk band, and we were at many concerts together. I remember when we were walking back home  that night, at least 5 km, in silence, just smiling, because that concert was once in a life-time experience, truly mystical, also for Pat and his band. Something absolutely unforgettable, out of this world. He performed in my country later many times, and he still remembers that night in 1985. And the connection with Cherish..Here you are : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbW4FmlN3M8 'Cherish' was written in 1966 by Terry Kirkman (born 1939) and recorded with his group The Association. In September 1966 that song b

Jack, David and ..Shaun.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmk3ozf3RJg  Truly speaking in the 70s I knew very well two Cassidys - Jack and Shaun. David was like a dream ,I heard his two or three songs, saw some pics in 'Bravo', that's all, didn't watch TPF or any tv programmes with him. I was a little bit too young , became music fan about 1974. I loved America, The Eagles, 10CC ,but also Led Zeppelin, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, jazz..So when Shaun became a new teen idol, and he was really popular in Poland , I didn't like his hits at all, on the contrary. Thought him very ..uninteresting, plastic, his music and the way he looked..Btw he is much more remembered than David,   when I start telling someone ( like my US consul , someone around my age) about David Cassidy, the first reaction is very often  - ' Shaun, I remember him, he was fun'..I have nothing against Shaun, but..Anyway, it seems strange, but I knew that he was David's younger brother but had no idea that Jack was the

The last David Cassidy's album recorded for RCA, November 1976. Produced by Gerry Beckley and David Cassidy. After the title song petered out at number 105 in the USA, the album was shelved at the last minute, those already pressed American copies were finally dumped on the market in July 1979..The album was released on schedule in Germany and Japan. RCA didn't even release it in the UK..And this is the best David's album in the 70's. I don't know how many times I've watched this video, David Cassidy singing his own song from that album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IA-EMX8SzRo David wrote, or co-wrote 7 songs , the other two are great covers. Those recordings are for a mature listener, album full of passion, sadness, loneliness , anger and also sarcastic humor. Music is  darker, more rock-oriented, David's voice is huskier.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWXx03VFVsY&t=27s You can hear that those songs were recorded by fantastic , talented musicia

The second RCA David Cassidy's album released in March 1976, produced again by David and Bruce Johnston. This time Gerry Beckley took a more active role, co-wrote two songs with David. And Bill House, a talented  session musician , composer and singer,  co-wrote with David even more, four, among them this one (in this video David performed with Steve Ross) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O78YHPADwNo&t=98s I've tried to find more about Bill House, he released one album on RCA in 1974, on which he sang 10 own compositions, also..'You're No Better Than A Common Thief', David made a cover of that song on 'The Higher They Climb , The Harder They Fall'. They became friends for a while, but they never worked together again.. Bill House :'David and I were spending a lot of time together then. When I first met David, it was almost like we'd known each other for a long time.. (..) For that album David and I got on a plane to Hawaii(..) We wrote them (so

The album was released July 1975 on RCA, produced by David Cassidy and Bruce Johnston https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBZ3PqdaXi0 '..performer who knew precisely what he was doing and reminded in control all the way. Maybe it's true that the higher they climb, the harder they fall, but Cassidy seemed to be relishing every minute of that precipitous descent (Dave Thompson). This is a fabulous, very personal  concept album about stardom and the pain of a transition, from a teen idol to mature, very sure of himself artist. The maturity of David's voice and his courage is truly amazing. He made all decisions, wrote or co-wrote songs, even covers were very personal,  he also played on every track - guitars, percussion and keyboards. And he worked with really outstanding musicians. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAVQOGdADPc Jim Seiter (a very known LA recording producer and a session muscician, David's friend, who was with him on 74 World Tour) : 'The first day at RCA wa

Then I'll Be Someone /Carl Wilson, Tandyn Almer/

'The skin is brown and clear, stretched taut across the cheekbones. He is Yes, much thinner than of yore. And yes, boyishly good-looking. The eyes though, are red. It's almost as if the eyes belonged to someone else, some alien, raw and red as a carrot, snuck into this taut sun-kissed epidermis.(..) He just woken up, those eyes, so very terribly raw, gave an immediate impression/parallel of Dorian Gray.(..).. lights another link in the chain of Marlboro's he's threaded the interview with.' David Cassidy as he was seen in April 1976 (G.Dadomo, Sounds Magazine, April 3, 1976) the next day he was a guest star on  Russell Harty Show and he sang that song.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXFWBSVMT64 Co-wrote by that crazy forgotten genius Tandyn Almer, the song is discussed not only by David's fans  http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php?topic=13974.0  , it was never released. Those two  years after leaving TPF and when he  stopped  touring, was one of the worst in

Leaving Keith Partridge

Image
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMP2evqKEic This is one of the first interviews (hundreds to come) in which David Cassidy explained why he'd decided to stop touring, had enough of  The Partridge Family and that he wasn't Keith..Sadly he had to talk about it over and over for the rest of his days..For the next 43 years..People didn't let him forget Keith. We didn't have TPF on our tv , never,  I saw all 96 episodes only in 2018 , thanks to my very GENEROUS English friend (I'm forever grateful)..I was a little afraid to start watching. I knew a lot about it, about people who made it and how everything was ended. It took me some time, nearly 2 months to see all episodes. I watched TPF as a fan of David Cassidy's music , a  very grown up one. So ..where to start.. Sloppy editing, Tracy looking straight at the camera, the same actors playing different characters ( Gordon Jump - 7), far-fetched stories, two Chrises, one Ricky, one disappearing dog, these strange con

Could It Be Forever/Wes Farrell, Danny Janssen/

Image
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFdedq_6Iy4 The first David's single which was much more popular in the UK(#2 in April 1972) than in the US I can imagine Wes Farrell watching The Partridge Family's pilot for the first time..Bingo! and when he met  David and heard how this beautiful boy could sing..the most expensive champange must have been ordered. Wes : 'Larry Uttal showed me a pilot and the rest is history. You had a young guy named David Cassidy who had star image written all over him (..)Everything was written with him in mind. David was a one-hundred-percenter. He never backed away from his commitment one iota'. (DC;Could It Be Forever, 2017) Wes was the boss, 31 in 1970, a very known(and successful) music producer and songwriter, and  unknown 20 year old boy with no recording experience at all. David was so naive, at the beginning he had no idea that Wes 'owned' him, because Farrell had the rights to produce also his solo records. If we add to this that

I Write the Songs /Bruce Johnston/

Image
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_6cwUso8CA It was on The Top Of The Pops, on July 10, 1975. The single from David's album 'The Higher They Climb, The Harder They Fall'. On July 26th the song reached number 11 on the UK chart. The author of the song and David's album producer , Bruce Johnston wasn't very happy with David's choice. He thought that the 'Higher They Climb , The Harder They Fall ' was a great concept album with one weak track - 'I Write the Songs' .Bruce Johnston : 'I've always kind of wondered if David thought - maybe I better record it because I know it could be a hit - it's kind of life insurance - I know David always says he was the first one to record it but it really was Capitan and Tennille.' (Mike Morsh (The Vinyl Dialogues) Whatever  the story was I love that song , and this live version is even better than a recorded one. I think  that his performance also shows us why some people loved David and some.. did

A Horse With No Name/Dewey Bunnell/

Image
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tm4BrZjY_Sg Recently I've read somewhere a strange comment. That David Cassidy wanted to be respected by his peers ,and his peers were Donny Osmond and Michael Jackson, teen idols like him...What's that supposed to mean? First of all it's not true, David was at least 8 years older..and you may like them or not . but Michael and also Donny have their place in music history, not only as teen idols....Yes, David Cassidy wanted to be respected by his peers , musicians from his generation , like e.g.  Dewey Bunnell (the author of my post's title song) and Gerry Beckley, co-founders and members of America band . They not only respected him, but also for two years in 1975 and 1976, worked with David on his RCA albums. Henry Diltz wrote (in 2019) about David, Dewey and Gerry -'Long time musical friends, they had a very spirited time singing together. We all miss David.'. They also wrote some songs together. Like that one , written by Da

Breaking Up Is Hard To Do /Howard Greenfield, Neil Sedaka/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nh8VR5WuYy0 This is David Cassidy's third recorded version of that song. The first one was happy The Partridge Family's hit from 1972.  Smiling Keith sang it to lucky girls in 'Nag, Nag, Nag' episode (Season 3 12(61). Who could have left him... The second was a slower, sensual concert version on 'Cassidy Live!', and the last one from 'Touch Of Blue' album from 2003, so sad and moving, he is so unhappy, doesn't believe in good ending himself. This beautiful video was made by Anna Maria Ottengren. But the theme of this post is not David's music but YT's channels dedicated to David Cassidy. You Tube..I don't remember how we managed without it. About 85 000 videos post there daily. Unbelievable. Our source of information. There are channels were DC appears  occasionally , like on Style Record Group, where there is DC playlist with 73 videos from every decade, beautifully edited and remastered, really outstand
