Cherish, Part 2. The album

David Cassidy's first solo album, released in the US in February 1972 (#15, 23 weeks on chart) , in the UK  in March - #2  in May - 44 weeks on chart. I've already written about some songs from that album, but more real classics left..

Tony Romeo's masterpiece, it's just scary how much this song is about David..Watching those pics from Sweden made me think about how hard David worked , especially in 1971, the year he recorded 'Cherish'. Yes, it was 50 years ago..So..let's take a trip back in time..

February - TPF 'Up To Date' album is released - #3 in April -53 weeks on chart, 2 singles in top 10 ; March 26th the first concert in Seattle (34  concerts in 1971), in April takes part in 'This Is Yor Life' with Shirley Jones; on July12th after months of pain and dieting  has a life-saving operation, returns to playing concerts in the middle of August (performing with a surgical belt) , his dog Ricky dies.. in August TPF 'Sound Magazine' is released , #9 , 35 weeks on chart, the same month in Merv Griffin Show with Jack, buys and moves into a new house in Encino, October 24th on the Glen Cambell Show,  TPF Christmas Card released in November, also in November recording - 'Cherish' and  TPF 'Shopping Bag' , in October 'Cherish' single is released in the US, in November (again) his new contract is regenociated..and of course working on the set (the most popular Season2),countless interviews and photo sessions, kidnapping threat, pics in the press with Robyn Millan..but it's a kind of smoke screen because he is dating  someone else, someone  who breaks his heart..

I always have (nearly) tears in my eyes when I listen to this song. Written in 1971 by Kin Vassey, David was one of the first artist who recorded it.

'Cherish' was produced by Wes Farrell, made with the same musicians, arrangers ,in the same studio where the TPF's albums were recorded. But that album is more mature , great quality and very good songs (some of them more than just very good) which show David's vocal range. His young voice is so magic and sincere , he is singing with such emotions, I believe in every word ..

Written by Adam Miller, another mysterious songwriter, he wrote 3 songs for 'Cherish' and another 2 for 'Rock Me Baby'. I've tried to find more info,  very versalite man , because he later worked on many projects (mostly on tv) as a musician (bass, drums, vocal),music composer, assistant engineer, arranger, photographer..the last credit is from 2017..but no pics, no more info..I love his songs for David, here another one:

When we add that on the front and back of the album there are fabulous David Cassidy's pics made by his friend , great Henry Diltz..This album is truly loved and cherished..So once more , 'Cherish' , just as this song was heard by millions , for the first time...half a century ago..

Don't get me wrong, I'm not writing today's blog just to gossip about DC's private life, it's because I always admired that amazing woman, Kay Ann Lenz. She had birthday yesterday. 3 years younger than David, a few years older than a typical DC's fan.  In the 70s I heard quite a lot about Kay Lenz . She was very popular in Poland, like the rest of the cast of 'Rich Man, Poor Man'. That tv series was shown in my country I think in 1978, and everybody watched it, also a lot was written about the cast. So one day I read that Kay's husband was a former teen idol, David Cassidy. There was also a pic and I thought that it was just wonderful, I thought they were the most beautiful couple in the world. There was something very moving about Kay. They Said I Changed A Lot..

Let's first listen to something which was not released, why they didn't want David singing that song is a great mystery for me. Listening to his young, sincere, innocent and magical voice is one in a kind moving experience. 'I Just Hated Being In The Show..'

Last week someone posted a screenshot of the article from May 1974, unfortunately without the date or the name of the paper. Written by a popular journalist Roderick Gilchrist, I think it was Daily Express. We can read that this interview took place at London Weekend Television's Building, on the day before the DC's last concert in Manchester.  And David said, "I feel like the door to the cage has just been opened. And, any minute now I'm going to be able to fly right away from my prison.
