Like Father, Like Son /David Cassidy, Sue Shifrin, Steve Diamond/

First let's listen to that fabulous song 'Like Father, Like Son', from David Cassidy's album called 'Didn't You Used To Be' ,released in August 1992 on Scotti Bros. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KPpdWop8zE It should have been a great hit.  So powerful and so personal , so brave because for DC his relationship with his own father was a pain for life. He wrote this song after his own son was born. 'Watching the birth of my son, was arguably the most joyous moment in my life.(..) Experiencing something that I never thought I would. Bringing another life into this world. Protecting him. Loving him(..) If you've never had a child, you can't ever imagine what's it like until it happened. And when it does happen, you can never be the same again.' (David Cassidy : Could It Be Forever?', 2007) Of course, DC already had another child, but he didn't have any contact with Katie at that time. She was raised by her mother and stepfather, it

In the early 90s David became a celebrity in the U.S. again. He was often invited to many tv shows, his wedding pics were in 'Hello' magazine, and his fellow musicians really respected him as an artist. On March 25th 1992 DC took part in the 40th anniversary of a very popular weekly tv show called  American Bandstand (David took part in it himself in 1970). He was invited to jam on stage as a guitarist, with a lot of very known musicians to accompany Bo Diddley..We can see on that video that it gave him a lot of satisfaction being in that company.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNcdIJbSZXg But on April 29th 1992 everybody in LA forgot about music. That day , a jury acquitted four officers of the LA Police Department for usage of excessive force in the arrest and beating of Rodney King. This verdict resulted in a series of riots (they ended on May 4th) , the biggest in the U.S. in the 20th century. 83 people were killed, 2383 were injured, more than 12 000 were arrested, 3767

For What Is Worth /Stephen Stills/

I wrote in the previous post that recording by David 'If I Didn't Care ' was unusal..but playing live  "For What Is Worth' in 1974 ..that was really  something.. And the way David and his band, and  his great back singers Gloria and Trish played and sang it.. It was truly amazing. David also played the guitar. But of course it's nothing unusal if  we know that Stephen Stills  was one of teenage David Cassidy's musical heros, and that he saw Buffalo Springfield on stage in the 60s. Or he even took part in those curefew riots (so called hippie riots) this song was inspired  by. They took place in November 1966, in LA, DC was 16 years old and we know that he did what he wanted ..I wonder..  Anyway, his live cover is outstanding, I wish no fans could listen to it (including one Polish music critic who told me that DC was a singer for little girls). This recording can really change opinion of many, if  they only want to listen to DC without prejudice.. https:/

This is a fabulous song recorded in 1939 by Ink Spots, sold 19 millions copies .19 millions, it's one of the best selling single of all time. It's nice that David's cover is mentioned in Wikipedia. I always thought that it was so extraordinary that he'd recorded it in 1974..What an unusual choice for a teen idol in the 70s, even if 20s and 30s were popular at the time...Anyway, it was a hit in the UK (number 9 in May) , I've heard some other covers and can say that DC's version is ..amazing, his smooth and dreamy voice.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiIrTJOLquU&t=41s He cared, and in 1991 even more. David and Sue..Both of them over 40, very career oriented, ambitious and hard working, and they never really thought about kids. What more, Sue was told that she couldn't have children..but such things happens and..she found that she was pregnant..At first two of them couldn't believe it or know what to think about it. The time came to make some importa

The album 'David Cassidy' was released in October 1990 by Enigma Records, in the U.S only on CD and casette , in Germany on vinyl. produced by E.T.Thorngren and Phil Ramone. David Cassidy told many times how he had been a victim of industry again, that because Enigma 'went belly up' ,his album wasn't as successful as it should have been. It's a good opportunity for me to write that as much as I'm a loyal fan , some things DC kept telling through the years was ..PR.. of course it's  nothing unusual in showbusiness..But let's first listen (again , I know) to my favourite song from that album, written by David and Sue. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f67B3B49RFI The album stayed on the charts for 12 weeks, and peaked at number 136, the single 'Lyin' To Myself' was the first top 30 hit in the U.S. for David in 18 years. I think that it was a fantastic achivement. The song was number 27 on November17, 1990. David was a guest on many tv program

This is not a post about  DC's great hit , but about his ..famous boots. He looked incredible in that video ,and I bet he had a lot of fun too. Poor French cameraman didn't know what he liked best - David's boots or his long amazing hair , or his outfit..I love this video. This is the best copy that I know about , but because it belongs to that ego-maniac.., our dear Gary J. B... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSAAyoRd8gE And a lunchbox...In 1990 David again had those boots on..and there was a lunchbox too.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6fcdhQn32M Yes, This is a post about The Spirit of '76. . 1990  was very busy and very important  for David Cassidy. A new album, a new rock image, a movie ..and a new life. Let's start from the movie. The Spirit of '76 was released on 12th October, 1990. It was a science fiction comedy, about three time travellers (from 2176) who by mistake found themselves not in 1776 (as they wanted), but..in 1976. This is not the best co

The Partridge Family - I Can Feel Your Heartbeat (Wes Farrell, Jim Cretecos, Mike Appel)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3fPtMuBtMs The first ever David Cassidy's concert took place 50 years ago, on March 26th, 1971 , at Seattle Center Arena , in Seattle, WA. It was so long time ago that this buliding is not exist anymore . We know a lot about this concert , thanks to DC's autobiography, but first of all to Elliot Mintz. When he recorded his interview with DC in 1974, in Hawaii, he went to great lenghts to ask David about the smallest details of that first concert. This recording is just fascinating .Elliot was inquisitive , kept David on track with his story, and it's so moving to listen to young David Cassidy,  who himself tried to comprehend and understand it all. It's like being there with them. The part about this first concert  starts at 1.25.49 (for those who has  never listened to those priceless tapes). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=my9W-rohxVk&t=6185s T

Treat Me Like You Used To/David Cassidy, Sue Shifrin, Mark Spiro/

I haven't planned to write that post, but while gathering info about David's album from 1990 called  'David Cassidy' , I've been watching some videos on YT, and reading fans' comments..And people have no idea how talented and very successful songwriter was Sue Shifrin. What more, some fans think that it was David who wrote eg 'All Because Of You'.and some other songs. Wrong,  and truly speaking it's not so difficult to check info if someone wants to. Of course it's easier to write..you know what.. So this is the post about a songwriter, Sue Linda Shifrin Cassidy. I hope you will have a look and listen to those great artists singing this very talented (and underestimated) woman's songs.. All Because Of You - written by Sue Shifrin and Jon Lind, from Cher 1989 album 'Heart Of Stone' , this album was sold more than 4 million copies worldwide , 'If I Could Turn Back Time'  was a great hit from that record, if Sue's song was c

Let's imagine the year is 1990 , tv is turned on, MTV, and why not ..you are doing sth..what wives and mothers do..let's say..ironing..and suddenly...what a great rock song, a fabulous, strong,  breathy voice..there is something familiar..you are looking closer..wow..what a guy..body and everything..one moment!... that hair..and those eyes..sure .you've seen him somewhere....many years ago ,but.. he looked different...It can't be??.The iron is falling out of your hands. You are 13 again and in love for the first time....Yes!!...David Cassidy ..a brand new one, mature and very handsome DC.  And like always..singing about love.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJMMSWJosRs But how David came to be on MTV ? With a new great hit ? We must return to 1987. DC arrived in London in March that year , he started rehearsals in the Dominion Theatre,  very hard working time for him, 15, 16 hours a day. DC lived in a little 2 bedroom apartment in Knightsbridge ,near Montpelier Square

I love the recorded album's version of that song ( from 1975)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOojp5r5qYU&list=RDJOojp5r5qYU&start_radio=1 DC as  a songwriter..I'm not objective , I love most DC's music  for many reasons, but of course  writing about a song that 'it's great' is not enough. I've just checked (on the DC website) how many songs he wrote or co-wrote - 60. Some of them were his versions of someone's elses songs, kind of covers, like most tracks from the 'Romance' album. Those songs were originally written by Alan Tarney for Cliff Richard. DC was a great interpreter, I wrote that many times..Anyway, 'When I'm a Rock'N'Roll Star' (like a whole album - 'The Higher They Climb The Harder They Fall' )was his very brave and sincere attempt to became a serious artist. And it happened that at the end of the 80s ,DC played  a fictional rock star 3 times : on stage, in a tv series and in a movie. And in a tv

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGrdlR1fKr4 What a great video and one of the best songs wrote or co wrote by David Cassidy.. And it was love that  saved him..But it was a long and winding road.. In 1986 he had  $1000 on his bank account and about $ 800 000 in debt. For a man who was a millionaire on his 21st birthday... after 15 years..nothing and him feeling a failure, a forgotten has been , on the brink of ..But he was a lucky man, he had loyal friends. Sam Hyman was also broke and both of them didn't know what to do with their lives. 'It was a scary time' Sam said later 'To see David in such a state.' Sam Hyman got a job, just $5 an hour working at Sinclair's paint store in Los Angeles. David Cassidy for a while lived with Sam, and later  for 6 months  (he rented it) in a guest room of Sam's sister's two bedroom apartment. And one day he realized that if he wanted to survive ..and live, he had to fight. DC started  going to gym, 6 times a week, and h

David Cassidy was singing that Elton's  hit during his British tour in 1985. btw I've heard recently that Elton John has written about DC in his autobiography. They were friends in the 70s.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCr2xlxX4zM He was truly an amazing live performer , David Cassidy was..always giving 100% or even more.. The song was sung nearly at the end of 2-hour very demanding show , and at one of the last concerts of that long and very emotional tour. Between September 21st and October 26th , 1985, DC played 21 concerts all over the UK , at the very known and prestigous conncert halls, like  Cornwall Coliseum in St. Austell, Royal Albert Hall in London, Apollo Theatre in  Oxford and in Manchester, Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham , The Edinburgh Playhouse, Odeon Birmingham to name a few, some of those places are not exist any more. The tour was a great success . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVsg-_HF154 David Wigg :'70's pop idol has stormed back into the

Let's return to the 70s again On the pic David (and his fans, and his entourage) at the airport in Brisbane, Australia, 1974. The song is from 1973.. . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwbPy6r5wTk&t=9s Oh yes, he gave us fever. Maybe because I wasn't a real fan in the 70s , and I didn't read teen mags, now as a grown up woman I can't  understand how anyone could have thought DC was Keith Partridge, that sweet school boy's tv artificial character..David Cassidy, young or old, was a very sexy man, and sex was very important part of DC's image as a teen idol,  his songs, and the way he looked..I wonder what parents  thought when they'd heard their daugters listening to 'Rock Me Baby' for example,.. or 'Mae' . And David on stage..We can find a lot of articles on his phenomenal popularity, and his sex appeal. This is a fragment of one of them: Laurel Dann (TVRadioMirror)Mag1972Jan 'The Backstage Life Of A Teenage-Sex Idol' : 'Their a

After his success on Broadway in 'Joseph" in 1983, David was often written about at gossip columns, he was chosen as the best dressed stage persona by the Fashion Fundation of America in May 1983, and also appeared some articles about his divorce with Kay, and a new woman by his side, Maryl Tanz. This is a tv interview with both of them.  Smiling and happy.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXD3x9TBTNU 1984 looked like a year of a real breakthrough, he was in love and wanted to marry again, had a new role on stage and was thinking about making an album. That new role, performed just for a few days, but what a challenge.. David Cassidy in the title role in the rock opera 'Jesus Christ Superstar'. Let's listen to the great Ian Gillan's version of the most famous song from this musical, also to realize what kind of challenge it was for DC : ://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOjyGy1NR4 'Jesus Christ Superstar' was written in 1970, a year later the musical appeared

Any Dream Will Do /Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice/

The musical 'Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat', was written by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber in 1968. The show has little spoken dialogue, and  at first it was a 25 minute pastiche for the junior school choir. It's almost entirely sung-through, and  a family-friendly kind of story.  That production of 'Joseph'  had run on Broadway at the Royale Theatre (now Bernard B.Jacobs Theatre) since January 1981. It was very successful and David took over the title role in March 1983, he played Joseph until September that year, later touring with it in the U.S. and Canada.(also in 1984) I don't know who and  how did this  recording, a lot of fans came from all corners of the U.S. and also from Europe, to New York, to see David in that show, and they tried filmed what they could. It's really extraordinary, very poor quality of course, but we can see what kind of show it was, and what a shame that instead making great records.. But I know that David Cassid

In 1982..of course I had no idea in the 80s what DC was doing at the time, I don't think I thought about him in that decade even once. I was very busy, I started working (very long hours) when I was 18 , I studied (extramural), I got married, had kids, we were very poor, changed our rented flats often..It was also a very bad and turbulent decade for Poland - Solidarity, economic crisis, there were ration cards for ..everything really, and it was one thing to have a card (I remember losing mine once ,and it was such a huge problem) and to get sth for them. martial law was in force for two years, there were tanks in the streets.. people  were killed, we took part in illegal demontrations,  thousands were in prison...But I was young and happy in spite of everything. When now I read about David Cassidy's life  in the 80s, I really admire his fighting spirit , how he kept reinventing himself and never gave up , even if it was so hard for him, and that he also wasn't afraid to sh

At the end of 1980 David Cassidy had enough of waiting for good tv or film roles. They wouldn't come. No one was going to give  him anything. If he wanted to survive he had to fight. David told his agent that he would take anything. He wanted to work and would do whatever. Whatever was better than nothing. And he finally got a proposition which was like getting the chance to start everything once again, return to the roots, to the theatre. It was an offer for a title role in one of the most iconic American musicals 'Little Johnny Jones' . Written by the father of American musical comedy, George M.Cohan ,in 1904, the musical was inspired by the adventures of Tod Sloan, a famous American jockey, who had gone to London in 1903 to ride in the English Derby. In the 40s was made a famous film version called 'Yankee Doodle Dandy' with James Cagney. It was a huge challenge for David , everybody knew the film, but it was also an enormous chance for a fresh start , he wanted

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXTNpuu74IA&t=58s   The song is from the  'David Cassidy' album released in 1990, not in 1980, but the author of that video has chosen fragments of Man Undercover (1978Dec7,Ep5.Flashpoint) and it suits the song and the theme of my post..because 1980 was a really tough year for David Cassidy. On June 6th Ruth Aarons died, just a few days before her 62th birthday. She was someone very important for David Cassidy ,Ruth was not only his manager. DC met her when he was a little boy,  trusted and admired her. Ruth Aarons was from a very wealthy show-business family , a former world table tennis champion and a very sucessful manager, one of the first woman in that business. Smart, funny and sophisticated..The death of Jack Cassidy was a huge blow for her, and she developed an addiction to prescription medication. Her clients left her. David  tried to visit Ruth at least once a week, he found thousands of pills at her home..At the end she wasn't

First the promo.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPFNOAVGSlE And the theme song.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQ7wVbG7H6Y This is a great tv series theme song, and in the episode 'Flashpoint' (E5 aired Dec 7, 1978) we could also  hear another DC's song, 'Gettin' It In The Street'. The theme song produced by Ken Mansfield, co-wrote by Jay Gruska, must be a Polish connection somewhere, in Polish gruska means a pear. He co -wrote with DC one song for  "Gettin' It In The Street' album. Great video. Wonderful song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ao4gtpXF8aA&list=RDAo4gtpXF8aA&start_radio=1 'Police Story A Chance To Live' became the pilot for a tv series called Man Undercover in which David reprised the role of officer Dan Shay. NBC was impressed by the good reviews and very high ratings. The idea for the series was brilliant ; an undercover cop whose work reflected on his private life. A double life, that was something David underst

In November 1977 David Cassidy began working seriously again. He started filming a two-hour special episode of a very popular tv series called The Police Story. And it seemed that everybody had been waiting for him. In 1977 he was often written about as Kay's husband or the current teen idol Shaun Cassidy's  half brother. But in November it was a great return of David Cassidy, an actor. The titles of those articles published at the end of 1977 speak for themselves :'David Cassidy Grows Up', 'David Cassidy Returns to His Old Love - Acting', 'David Cassidy Wants To Be Taken Seriously' . 'Cassidy Returns, Hopes For A Bright New Future'. One reporter wrote about him :'His baby faced good looks have given way to attractive masculinity. His voice has deepened and he's developed a sense of humour about himself.'   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gM_89AJpfPc This single was released in 1979 (MCA Records with the b side - 'Once A Fool' . It was a cover of 1965 hit..What can I say..it should have been a hit for David , it's a great version, absolutely his own, like no other covers of that song (there were many), very soulful , his voice was so smooth..It  really 'hurts so bad'  that it was his last released recording in the 70s. The next album with the new material appeared only 6 years later..When I think about the songs we could have had..In 1979 he was 29 .. But it wasn't a hit for him, instead for Linda Ronstadt who released her cover in March 1980.  When David Cassidy married Kay Lenz in April 1977, they became a very popular, celebrity couple. They took part in many charity events and tv programmes. Unfortunately no video has survived , just 1 or 2 from 1977 with DC alone, I love this one : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNiqYGn_ebg They gave interviews . On June 17
