The song is from the  'David Cassidy' album released in 1990, not in 1980, but the author of that video has chosen fragments of Man Undercover (1978Dec7,Ep5.Flashpoint) and it suits the song and the theme of my post..because 1980 was a really tough year for David Cassidy.

On June 6th Ruth Aarons died, just a few days before her 62th birthday. She was someone very important for David Cassidy ,Ruth was not only his manager. DC met her when he was a little boy,  trusted and admired her. Ruth Aarons was from a very wealthy show-business family , a former world table tennis champion and a very sucessful manager, one of the first woman in that business. Smart, funny and sophisticated..The death of Jack Cassidy was a huge blow for her, and she developed an addiction to prescription medication. Her clients left her. David  tried to visit Ruth at least once a week, he found thousands of pills at her home..At the end she wasn't able to leave her bed. She was found dead in the shower.

David Cassidy :'For a long time, I didn't know how to function without her, I was crippled by her death. Had she lived, my career would not have had such a large hole in it.(..) We had started to set a lot of my goals..(..) Then she died and it all died with her.' (David Cassidy:Could It Be Forever?, 2007)

David earned a real fortune when he was a teen idol. Maybe that sum, 8 millions it's not very impressive now, but it was huge those 50 years ago , (eg in 1969 DC earned 3000$),  when he 'retired' in 1974 , might not work to the rest of his life..But in 1980 he lost everything, also Kay's money , in a very bad investmet, not only lost it, but it took David the whole 80s to pay off the bank loans..His marriage was on the rocks. David and Kay worked together once at the theatre, in June 1979.The play was called 'The Voice Of The Turtle' , a World War I romance. For David it was the first role on stage after 10 years..One journalist wrote that 'in the audience there was palpable excitement because of him, and David Cassidy has charisma and is a skilled actor.'

But in 1980 both of their careers were in decline, also Kay's..she didn't have any work for several months, when they parted she had a very difficult time. But Kay didn't give up and got an Emmy award in 1989 for playing..Tina Cassidy. ' First they wanted to change (the name) because of me, but they kept it and it didn't bother me at all.'

They eventually divorced on December 28, 1983

In 1980 David desperately needed work, any work..It's hard to watch him in such tv series like 'Fantasy Island' ,and 'The Love Boat' ,and with moustache (and in bad shape) in a tv film called 'The Night The City Screamed', but that was all what he got in 1980...

So another song about dreams which can't come true, old TPF's song..

Don't get me wrong, I'm not writing today's blog just to gossip about DC's private life, it's because I always admired that amazing woman, Kay Ann Lenz. She had birthday yesterday. 3 years younger than David, a few years older than a typical DC's fan.  In the 70s I heard quite a lot about Kay Lenz . She was very popular in Poland, like the rest of the cast of 'Rich Man, Poor Man'. That tv series was shown in my country I think in 1978, and everybody watched it, also a lot was written about the cast. So one day I read that Kay's husband was a former teen idol, David Cassidy. There was also a pic and I thought that it was just wonderful, I thought they were the most beautiful couple in the world. There was something very moving about Kay. They Said I Changed A Lot..

Let's first listen to something which was not released, why they didn't want David singing that song is a great mystery for me. Listening to his young, sincere, innocent and magical voice is one in a kind moving experience. 'I Just Hated Being In The Show..'

Last week someone posted a screenshot of the article from May 1974, unfortunately without the date or the name of the paper. Written by a popular journalist Roderick Gilchrist, I think it was Daily Express. We can read that this interview took place at London Weekend Television's Building, on the day before the DC's last concert in Manchester.  And David said, "I feel like the door to the cage has just been opened. And, any minute now I'm going to be able to fly right away from my prison.
