I Write The Songs / Bruce Johnston

Image
I know who wrote it. Bruce Johnston, such a wonderful, versalite artist, a musician, singer, songwriter and record producer. I know who recorded 'I Write The Songs' first. Captain & Tennille, it's on their 1975 album, 'Love Will Keep Us Together'. David was the first who released 'I Write The Songs' as a single. And of course I've written about the DC's and Barry Manilow's versions many times on my blog and on social media. This is David's song. I've always thought that the DC's version is really extraordinary and the best, and even once one fan called me 'a fanatic' and that I shouldn't write which version is better, the David's or Barry's. It was 5 years ago, and I was 'a new fan', just started discovering David Cassidy's music and learning about him. And my knowledge of English was rather poor, it took me a lot of time to write a simple comment on the website, and it didn't help either, that

Sheltered In Your Arms / Reed Vertelney, John Pagano and David Cassidy

It was hard to write something yesterday, find words. A fellow David Cassidy's fan died. Diane Marowelli. My FB friend and I don't have many. We've never exchanged messages. She's never commented my posts and the same was with me. I've read hers and watched videos, she was a proud grandma..Recently Diane was so happy again. She wasn't a real friend, like some others met on social media have become, but her unexpected death was a shock yesterday. She died in her sleep.  I'm sad, and I've thought about that song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnydTbPTkuU From 'Old Trick, New Dog' released in May 1998 by the DC's own short-lived record label. It's difficult to understand how David found time to record this album. At the time  he still was performing in 'EFX'. Again  he was working too much and  too hard, and again was on the verge of a nervous breakdown.. 'During this period I was totally overwhelmed. My personal life and my rel

Gina Lollobrigida and Nita Talbot

I've met with my youngest daughter today, and during our conversation mentioned  Gina Lollobrigida. My daughter is 32 and has never heard about Gina or the movie 'Fanfan la Tulipe'. I've showed her the DC's pics with fruit taken by Gina, and my daughter's wishpered : 'OMG'. Exactly.  What an amazing woman Gina L. was. Last year someone took a picture of her. She was so small and fragile, but in an elegant skirt and high heels. Strong personality, she could have made much bigger career, but was stubborn, didn't want to live in America, refused many roles, her private life is the story itself. Gina and David. In 1974 the press around the world asked : 'whether they..?'. We have some articles on the website, also interviews with Gina. https://www.davidcassidy.com/fansite/InPrintPages/News1974March15.pdf And those pics? They are amazing. Henry Diltz talks about them in that short interview. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dytc6FhkK8I Gina was 95,

The Puppy Song/ Harry Nilsson

Image
We write so often about the musicians who influenced DC. The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Buffalo Springfield, rock and blues atists. But actions speaks more than words, and it seems that Harry Nilsson was probably the artist who influenced the most David Cassidy and his music in the 70s. Today we remember Harry Nilsson. Me at least. He died on January 15, 1994. I think that a lot of people have forgotten him, but in the 60s, both John Lennon and Paul McCartney regarded him as their fav American artist. I love 'Everybody's Talking'. Wrote in 1966 by Fred Neil, and recorded by Harry Nilsson in 1968. The song got Grammy after it was featured in the film 'Midnight Cowboy'. Of course I didn't see that film in the 70s, much later, one of the saddest I've ever seen in my life. I love the song and Harry's voice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kznTMxOsxo John Lennon and Paul McCartney invited Harry to London and Paul asked Harry Nilsson to write a song

The Ring.

A song first. That recording has really made my day, making me truly happy. Just wonderful. https://www.davidcassidy.com/fansite/DiscographyPages/I'll%20Leave%20Myself%20a%20Little%20Time_JohnGomolkaVersion.mp3 Yesterday I wrote that it was probably on the set of Marcus Welby, when for the first time DC had on his crest ring. I stress the word 'probably'. I've got some comments, and Donna Show, (thank you so much) has written  that it wasn't the crest ring, but -'shappire looking ring that he also wore when PF started.'. Nancy York has added - 'the first episode he had the ring on was 'Dora, Dora, Dora', which was aired in September 1971'. I really appreciate every comment, we all want to know everything about DC and it's very important to have reliable info. Of course I know what DC wrote himself, 'He (Jack) gave it to me for my twenty-first birthday.' (David Cassidy : Could It Be Forever?, 2007, p.318). So why I have written

'Yeah, he looks good..'

A song first. The beginning of 2023 is truly hard. Sure those people were strangers for us. We haven't known them personally, but they were important. Actually I talked about Jeff Beck on the first date with my future husband. It was 45 ago and I remember everything, every single song we were talking about. Music. It meant a lot. Lisa Marie..We all remember her as a sweet little girl, we read how she loved The Partridge Family and visited David on the set, we heard her singing her dad 'I Think I Love You'. The money and fame didn't bring her happiness, instead a lot of pain.  It's no wonder we're so sad today. I'm thinking about her mother and her daughters. The whole family. I've been searching for a DC song and nothing looked right. At last I've found. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOFAzcQXr4o But it's something we must be prepared for. It's just the way it is. We are middle- aged and our heroes are old. It's life. Let's return to

Two Guitarists..

I've had such problems to find a right title today. Or a pic. Whatever, it's not important. First a personal memory. It was 1977 and my mum agreed me watching a film on tv. Aired very late and not exactly for young audience. I was 15, and my parents were very strict, but I had to watch it, only for that one scene : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSJGEn4FDys The Yardbirds, the most legendary band ever. They were legends already in the 60s. Guitar gods played in it. Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck. And that amazing vocalist, Keith Relf, who died just 33. David Cassidy : 'My dream would be to play like Eric Clapton, but I don't have the commitment or talent. Sometimes, though, I sure wish I could make the instrument speak like very few people can. Jeff Beck makes it speak' And now we have to use the past tense.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VC02wGj5gPw Many people mourn Jeff Beck today, but he is not the only one great guitarist who's died this week. 'He Was One Of The Finest'

I haven't planned to write anything tonight, I'm still not very well after the cold I got while on holiday in Turkey, in December. Nothing serious, but that virus left me weak and lazy. So I have decided instead writing about DC, to check what's going on in my garden (we've had recently a visit of some wild boars), and also go for a really long walk. But it's impossible to spend a day without David Cassidy. In the morning my wonderful postman arrived on his bike with a parcel from England. At last! A new calendar with the DC's pics from my very close friend and a fellow-fan, Doreen. I have quite a collection of those calendars now. But this time I had to wait for it quite long. It has taken Royal Mail and our Poczta Polska, nearly a month to deliever it. I've read some articles compering 1973 in the UK with 2023, because of strikes and financial crisis. Maybe..For us 1973 was the year David Cassidy performed in Europe. He was huge, a superstar.  Those luck

A Grammy For David...One Day Maybe..

Image
I'm disappointed or rather surprised, that not many people appreciate a Grammy for Henry Diltz. That David Cassidy is listed as one of those 'music legends' photographed by him. The info about it is not on the website..I don't know why..Anyway, it's made me think about the awards DC got in his lifetime, and if it's possible he will ever get a Grammy. It's such an irony that at the very beginning of his career, when he didn't expect it, DC was nominated not only for a Grammy but also a Golden Globe. But not as David Cassidy, but as a member of The Partridge Family. In 1971. David Cassidy :'We were nominated for Grammy and Golden awards, none of which we won. Our show and music weren't quite credible enough; they were too commercial, too kid-oriented. That I got nominated for Grammys seemed pretty extraordinary to me, considering that before I was hired for TPF I had never even had aspirations of becoming a recording artist.' (David Cassidy : &

'I'm not cut out for show business..'

Sometimes we hear or read something, don't think about it much, forget it actually, and suddenly, out of the blue remembers it, and such a thing has happened to me today. Truly speaking it was only yesterday when I read an article posted, I think on the FB group called 'The Partridge Family..Get On The Bus'. It was a short interview with DC, probably from 1974, I read it, even took a screen shot (I'm thinking about a book about DC so I gather info), and forget about it. Just another interview in which DC was asked what he was going to do after leaving the show.  Maybe a song first, I've been listening to the DC's 2nd solo album in my car today.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMcMSGkPWtM It was more than half a century ago, and David still looks just sensational. If this video had been made in 2023...An epitome of a rock star. Timeless. And while walking today I suddenly have thought about something DC said in that interview : 'I've come to the realizat

The Recording Academy to Honor Henry Diltz

Image
A video first. Really outstanding. Big wow..And the story how that album cover was made. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yx7XrSqpQPk&t=173s And one more, what a shame a very short one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGTPDRzGcEI It's rather complicated, but to be brief, Henry Diltz will get a Grammy Award in February. At the Recording Academy's Special Merit Award Ceremony which will take place during Grammy Week, on February 5, Lifetime Achievement Award will get (among others), Bobby McFerrin, Nirvana, The Supremes, Ma Rainey, Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson of Heart.  Henry Diltz will get The Trustees Award, a Grammy for people who 'during their career in music, have made significant contributions, other than performance, to the field of recording.' In the announcement we can read about more than 250 album covers photographed by Henry (including that legendary Doors' album cover), and that Henry Diltz was the official photographer at the Woodstock Festival, in Aug

'We Are Not Sure We've Ever Seen the Real David Cassidy'

Image
A long title. It's a fragment of a web article published 23 years ago, actually on January 21, 2000, a review from 'a soft opening' of 'At The Copa' show, called :  'Cassidy offers sampling of several personas in Rio show.'  The author liked the show, 'is an amalgam of good ingredients', even if he (or she, I don't know)  thought the show wasn't very original, and tickets too expensive. We have videos on the website of the show itself, articles, and 2 very interesting adverts. One with DC and his co-star - https://www.davidcassidy.com/fansite/TheatrePages/AtTheCopaAdvert1.html And the other one..just with David https://www.davidcassidy.com/fansite/TheatrePages/AtTheCopaAdvert2.html Yes, in spite of what David and Sheena told in many interviews, there was no chemistry, or even worse. We can find some notes about 'two duelling egos'' backstage, and some people thought that Candace Davis-Martin, one of those sexy, very professional d

Since I Fell For You / Buddy Johnson

Image
What a title, just for us, the DC fans all over the world. So many things happened since I fell for DC, his voice and him, David Cassidy as he was, the real man. I love his music, but I've never been a fan of that particular song, the  DC's cover of 'Since I Fell For You'. I've decided to have one more try. I've read the lyrics..'You made me leave my happy home' and 'I can't get you out of my heart'. Btw whether David ever sang about happy love? No heartbreaks, no doubts, just I love you and you love me and we are very happy together and forever. Maybe some Partridge Family's songs were like that. But let's return to 'Since I Fell For You', the DC version and really wonderful video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsJSAqv8GGE Maybe 'live' will be better, so many David's songs were even better when performed live. And at last I've found something really extraordinary, and of course fell for David once more.. http

'His Greatest Talent Was Singing'

Image
After the yesterday's entry my good FB friend, Gwen, has written a comment, that she's had no idea that 'Looking Through The Eyes Of Love' wasn't an original David Cassidy's song. That it was a cover. It happens quite often that I have such feedback. Of course many good songs have been covered many times by various artists. It's absolutely understandable, that's the way it is in that business. Btw the most covered song in the music history is 'Yesterday', with more than 1600 recorded cover versions. Can you imagine? 1600! Of course the covers David Cassidy recorded for The Partridge Family and his 2 first solo albums  were chosen by Wes Farrell, not by DC himself. And in the 70s we were too young to remember many of the originals. Wes looked for popular, good songs, but not for those everybody remembered. Popular all over the world. Sure 'Cherish' and 'How Can I Be Sure' were great hits in the US in the 60s, but I know some Englis

Looking Through the Eyes Of Love / Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil

When I was in England last May, I visited charity shops wherever I went. In Swindon, Bath or Sailsbury. Or Marlborough. We share a pssion for them, me and my friend B. We don't have many charity shops in Poland (I wonder why), so for me it was such a great opportunity. I was looking for some collector items for my mum, and for books and records for myself. And judging by old vinyls you can find at English charity shops, DC was really once a huge star there.  So I bought in England - 2 singles from 1985 - 'Romance (Let Your Heart Go)/Romance' and 'The Last Kiss/The Letter', and from the 70s - 'If I Didn't Care/Frozen Noses', 'Looking Thru The Eyes Of Love/Storybook Love' and 'I'll Meet You Halfway/ Breaking Up Is Hard To Do/ I Think I Love You'.  And because of buying them, I discovered a new world, very mysterious and full of traps for naive. The world of the David Cassidy's and Partridge Family's singles.  It started when I w

January / David Paton

Image
In 1975 the most popular band from Scotland was Bay City Rollers of course, all over in Europe, and later (thanks to Clive Davis from Arista), also in the US. But I always liked better another band from Edinburgh, Pilot. And its frontman, David (that wonderful name) Paton. Born at the end of October 1949, a really talented bassist, guitarist, singer and songwriter. Pilot was formed in 1973, in 1974 they recorded first album, produced by Alan Parsons. The first single from it, 'Magic', wrote by DP and Billy Lyall, was a great hit in Europe, Australia, Canada and in the USA. Really outstanding debut, No 5 on The Billboard Hot 100. I loved that song. And had a weak spot for David Paton https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzlK0OGpIRs In 1977 it was the end of Pilot's career, but David Paton was much more than another pretty boy from Edinburgh. He played on 2 first albums by Kate Bush, he recorded (and toured) with Elton John and Fish, played on many Alan Parsons Projects' album
