A Grammy For David...One Day Maybe..

Image
I'm disappointed or rather surprised, that not many people appreciate a Grammy for Henry Diltz. That David Cassidy is listed as one of those 'music legends' photographed by him. The info about it is not on the website..I don't know why..Anyway, it's made me think about the awards DC got in his lifetime, and if it's possible he will ever get a Grammy. It's such an irony that at the very beginning of his career, when he didn't expect it, DC was nominated not only for a Grammy but also a Golden Globe. But not as David Cassidy, but as a member of The Partridge Family. In 1971. David Cassidy :'We were nominated for Grammy and Golden awards, none of which we won. Our show and music weren't quite credible enough; they were too commercial, too kid-oriented. That I got nominated for Grammys seemed pretty extraordinary to me, considering that before I was hired for TPF I had never even had aspirations of becoming a recording artist.' (David Cassidy : ...

The Film David Wanted to Make

Image
In March 1976, Giovanni Dadomo interviewed David Cassidy in London. For 'Sound Magazine'. They met in the morning on the same day when DC appeared on The Russell Harty Show. And maybe let's start with the song David performed at the end of that show..I know I've written about 'Then I'll Be Someone' so many times, but I love that song and to think that it was just a coincidence that we have that live recording. And it makes me think about other songs, those we don't even know about.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZFHa3QOvkI So in the morning (the article appeared on April 3, 1976) Giovanni Dadomo met with DC at his hotel, and they talked also about David's plans for the future. What about a movie? "Well, I've read fine screenplay, but I'm not really sure I'm going to be doing it.' He has, he says, received a whole bundle of screenplays - everything from the obvious vehicles for his old blue-eyed, white-toothed Partridge Family ...

'40 Carats', 'Breezy' and very busy David Cassidy

Image
I want to write today about those movie roles DC was offered in the 70s. Or truly speaking about one role. We don't know how it really was, maybe it was just a gossip, but there is one article on the website with info, that in 1973 DC turned down the role in a film called '40 Carats'.  It happened that I saw that film in the early 80s on our Polish tv, and I remember that I liked it, but thought there was no chemistry between those two lovers, and first of all that it was absolutely impossible that 22-year-old man could have been in love with a 40-year-old woman. At the time I was under 20 myself so you can understand it.  In '40 Carats', Liv Ullmann plays a successful businesswoman, who on holiday in Greece meets a handsome young man, who helps her when her car breaks down. They goes for a drink and later..get to know each other better. Even that the young man is very nice (in that role 22 year old Edward Albert),  the woman thinks it's just a holiday fling, no...

David as a Spooky Kid

Image
Someone called that the DC's character on 'Joey's Here', the 'Matt Houston's episode. David Cassidy played a genius and a dreamer. John Gordon Boyd. But a song first. DC performing 'Gettin' It In The Street'. I thought about that program watching Matt Houston. How he changed from 1976.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1X6JK-ncfrM Watching 'Joey's Here' turned out to be very useful. First of all, I've noticed that there is a wrong date on the website. December 1983, and  it should be December 1982, the first season of that tv series, and it makes a difference. For me at least, I always thought it was the DC's last role before he appeared again on Alfred Hitchcock on May 1988. But really the last role was on Fantasy Island, January 1983, nearly a year difference. When you write about someone on daily basis verified information and dates are a priority matter.  Of course the website is huge, errors are inevitable. I'm dyslextic, ...

David Cassidy, an actor or a singer ?

Image
We love to discuss it from time to time. What David preferred? Being an actor or a singer? Of course he wanted to be an actor at the beginning..but later?  What roles he could have played? Luke Skywalker ?..Danny from Grease ?, the names of the films are mentioned - 'Ghost', 'Pretty Woman', 'An Officer and a Gentelman'..I don't know. Personally I think he would have been great in 'Sting' and 'Great Gatsby'. The Robert Redford's characters. Both charming and on the hook with the law especially Jay Gatsby, mysterious, complex, romantic, David would have been in 'Great Gatsby' (and looked in those wonderful clothes) sensational.  Like on Fantasy Island, when he played Jeremy Todd. http://www.davidcassidy.com/fansite/TvFilmPages/FantasyIsland1983.html Was he a great actor? I don't know, I can't be objective, I usually can't take my eyes off him, a film, a tv episode or the plot is not important. He showed so potential in h...

The Lost Performances..The Voice of The Turtle.

Image
David and Kay..We have a lot of pics, but the tape of their guest appearance on Good Morning America, July 23, 1979, didn't exist anymore. At the time they were just to appear together on stage, for the first and only time. In 'The Voice of The Turtle'. David wanted to work with his wife. She wasn't so sure about it. And in June 1977, just 2 months after their marriage she gave an interview and said : 'David can think of us working together more easily than I can. Work was always the one place I had to myself, the one thing I never let boyfriends in on..I would never even let them on the set to watch me work. With David, it's going to have been different. I'm trying to learn that you don't give something up just because you share it with someone.' (June 18, 1977. Marilyn Beck : 'Cassidy-Lenz union happy despite work'). It explains a lot of things.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQfzIImCP84 David said in one interview :'a friend of ours ...

David Cassidy's Birthdays..in London.

Image
David's birthday soon. Another one without him. This year so special because of The Star, but I want to write about those few he spent in London, with his fans. David at the Palladium on April, 12th, 1987. Singing 'In My Defence' from 'Time' musical. He debuted in it the next day.  We have a great copy of his performance on the website, fantastic quality and with 'Please give him Happy Birthday welcome!!, and a cake.. http://www.davidcassidy.com/fansite/TvFilmPages/1987LiveAtThePalladium.html My friend Doreen saw David in 'Time' three times. 'David's performance was fantastic on each occasion. I just couldn't take my eyes off him..' Of course, I can imagine.. David Cassidy: Because I was totally broke, I really needed that job (..) They paid me a lot of money(..) even though it was a hit, I thought 'Time' was a bad play - no story really, no substance. It was just poorly written star vehicle for anybody who could sing and had  lit...

Playing Rick, Brad and Gene.

Image
David's 3 last the  pre- Keith Partridge roles.  April 1st, 1970. Medical Centre, episode 1.24 called '  The Brother's Keeper'. Aired on CBS. The series run for 7 seasons, David appeared at the end of the first one. Not as known as his role in Bonanza, but I think he was great in it.  Another dramatic, good performance, really worth watching. His character, 15 year old boy, Rick Lambert, another teen who has a complicated relationship with his father. David didn't have a lot to play, but he steals every scene, and we are so sorry for this lonely, confused and unhappy boy.  His presence is felt even when he is not on the screen. Great performance, I love especially the scene at the hospital with his older brother. That episode was probably filmed the same time as TPF's pilot and it makes it even more significant. And makes me think again what would have happened if he had quit playing Keith Partridge, and as we know he was thinking about it.. http://www.davidcass...

'Fun and Games and Michael Ambrose'

Image
The title of Marcus Welby, M.D. episode  (#1.16) which was aired on ABC, on January 13, 1970.  A very important David's title role. He played that kid, Michael. David Cassidy : (Could It Be Forever, 2007) ' My acting was lame on my first couple of shows, but I was really pleased with the job I did on Marcus Welby. I played a diabetic youth who, as a way to punish his father, wouldn't take his insulin. I had to do some highly emotional stuff. Ruth said it was a great piece of work and she would help me get more..' And she found him Keith Partridge..(it's just a remark..) Each decade has its own great and popular tv medical drama. Doctor Kildare..I loved watching ER and later House, M.D, Such medical tv dramas have  enormous audience . And David appeared on Marcus Welby, MD, when that show was nearly at the pic of its popularity. . The first episode was aired on September 23, 1969 and it was an instant, huge hit, it starred Robert Young as the title character, his p...

David Cassidy on The FBI

Image
The FBI episode called 'Fatal Impostor' (#5.17) was aired on January 4th 1970 on ABC. It was one of the David Cassidy's seven tv appearances in 1970. The last one of his pre TPF's role was in Mod Squad, and that episode  was aired on April 7th. Later for 4 years he played  Keith Douglas Partridge and a superstar known as David Cassidy...  The F.B.I. was a very popular tv series (1965-1974) , consisting of 9 seasons and 241 episodes. It looks like all actors in Hollywood played in it. Including Harrison Ford as a convicted murderer in that same season as DC. The first seasons were realistic and showed more violence. I've read that every detail of every episode of the series was carefully vetted by FBI second-in-command Clyde Tolson.  The premiere episode called 'The Monster' was about a handsome serial killer who strangled women with their own hair, and it  shocked Clyde Tolson so much that he recommended the show to be cancelled. J. Edgar Hoover tried at lea...

The Love Boat

Image
One other anniversary in November. The Love Boat. The episode with DC was aired on Nov 8, 1980, ep #4.4. David was just one of the guest stars, and not the most important one. And 1980 was a very difficult year for him. 30 year old  former teen idol ..who (as it seemed at the time) had hit bottom. It's scary when you think about DC's life and career in 1980. After the last Man Undercover episode, which was aired in January 1979, David waited for a new role a whole year , to January 1980 when he was on..'Fantasy Island' ( his old TPF's network, ABC), what more his new recorded music on which DC worked for quite a time wasn't released, and in June 1980 Ruth Aarons died. It was another personal  huge blow for David Cassidy. "When she died, I realised I had been so protected and kept away from the business that I had no professional relationships or connections.(..) I was completely lost, because I had known nothing but her guidance. (..) I was crippled by her ...

David Cassidy, Man Undercover

Image
After all I haven't left David Cassidy and my blog for a few days, but sometimes one's plans change. Anyway, I've just found that there is one more anniversary in that strange and unique month, November. 43 years ago, on November 2th the first episode of Man Undercover was aired, on NBC. With 'Hard Times, Hard Crimes' theme song, wrote by DC and Jay Gruska. Of course this is the same Gruska (interesting if he has Polish roots, the word gruska means a pear in my native language), who wrote with David a song for 'Gettin' It In The Street' album in 1976. This is a version of that song recorded in 1979 and released in 1991. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zs_RFSjwII He was born in 1952, and started his career in 1974, and I'm a little bit confused because on his site we can find that he co-wrote a song for Shaun Cassidy for his platinum album 'Born Late', and that he was a composer, songwriter and record producer for 'Ruby and the Rockits...

Danny, Larry, Michael, Tim, Billy..Part 2

Image
David was very satisfied with his role on Marcus Welby: "My acting was lame on my first couple of shows, but I was really pleased with the job I did on Marcus Welby. I played a diabetic youth who, as a way to punish his father, wouldn't take his insulin. I had to do some highly emotional stuff.' (David Cassidy: Could It Be Forever?', 2007) 'Marcus Welby' was aired in January 1970, and in February David Cassidy appeared on NBC twice. On February 14th on 'Adam-12', Episode 2.17 - 'A Rare Occasion'. DC played Tim Richmond, a purse thief focused on being jailed, a young boy on drugs with his dealer out to kill him..You can watch a whole episode  on the DC Official Website, David appeared at 11 min http://www.davidcassidy.com/fansite/TvFilmPages/Adam12.html DC looked very young, very vulnerable, he was noticed and praised for his acting. The boys he played were sensitive youngsters with complicated relationships with their fathers or stepfathers. B...

and some other boys. David Cassidy's pre Keith Partridge roles. 52 years ago, on November 7, 1969, on ABC, was aired Episode 7, of the short lived tv series called The Survivors, with a very impressive cast. David's character name was Mike, and he was one of the rebel students, that's everything we know about his debut role. On You Tube there is only the Episode 1 and a short promo : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VEFMWOWVv0 But it was just a beginning. As DC wrote himself : 'When things start to happen in television, they can happen very quickly. The casting directors hear about you and the next thing you know you are working a lot'. And yes he did. Good, dramatic, memorable roles. Also in 1969, on December 25th, on NBC, was aired the episode of  'Ironside' called 'Stolen On Demand' with David as Danny Goodson. A small note appeared on...The Albuquerque Tribune : '9-10 Channel 4 : Ironside has a sad tale of a ghetto boy with a weak father, a t...

Hollywood Nights / Bob Seger

Image
The song performed by the author himself was released in 1978. Funny but I don't remember it from the 70s. Of course there was censorship in Poland and a lot of American music simply wasn't played on our radio, or with great delay, after a year or more, or never. The same was with books and films. I had no idea eg about 'Lord Of The Rings', 'Master and Margerita' or '1984', thousands of books were forbidden and they just weren't translated.  In 1977 I heard about 'Star Wars'  for example, that it was a great hit behind The Iron Curtain and had a sensational soundtrack, but the Polish premiere was in 1979 and you can't imagine how  difficult was to get tickets, the film was shown just for a while. I was very interested in music, but we were listening mostly to the British artists.1978 meant for me  Dire Straits and  The Police. And my boy friend kept playing me his fav English band over and over again.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAKC...

I Lost My Chance / Adam Miller

Image
David Cassidy's tv career started in spectacular way in 1969. In 2013 , after nearly 44 years he had his last tv role, on a popular CBS show called 'CSI' , David played a veteran poker player , Peter Coe , a murder victim. That episode was called 'Last Woman Standing' and was aired on February 27th .I've once seen a short fragment of it on YT, but I can't find it now. Maybe it's better , that episode is really drastic ,and DC's character is murdered in an elevator (in a very unpleasant way).. David Cassidy's tv career..some lost chances..Let's listen to this song written by Adam Miller, it's about the lost love of course , but.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWxlrioMjx0 He first appeared on The Survivors aired November 7, 1969 , later the same year  was Ironside (Dec25th) , in 1970 - The FBI (Jan4th) , Marcus Welby (Jan13th) , Adam-12 (Feb14th) ..and the next day on Feb 5th - Bonanza , Medical Centre (April 1st) , Mod Squad (April 7th)....

Boone Vincent , Roland Pond and The Partridge Family (again)

Image
2003 and 2004 were another very busy years with a lot of  projects. Sometimes it's hard to keep up with David Cassidy. Concerts, tv roles and tv appearances, horses and charities. He looked so happy and satisfied...Another acting role - a happy David Cassidy. Malcolm In The Middle, it was an extremely popular tv series, known all over the world. Also at my home. My teenage daughters loved watching it together. I remember bursts of laughter behind the closed doors..I didn't watch it because those years between 2002 -2007 were the most difficult in my life , and they are like a big black hole in my memory. I remember only pain , and I really can understand why DC didn't play songs from his RCA albums..It was just hard to remember. Anyway later I've seen this episode many times, so funny, always mades me laugh, really great acting. David was fantastic as a star of Las Vegas , Boone Vincent. That episode was aired on November 2, 2004, on NBC. David Cassidy : 'I drew fro...

2003 - Everett Price , Teri Cote, A Touch Of Blue, New York ...and God Bless America..

Image
David Cassidy did so many things in 2003 that I've just had no idea what title of that post would have been the best..Let's start from a very interesting, serious  tv role. He played in the tv drama called 'Agency'. The serial followed the inner-workings of the CIA and its war with Al Queada. One of the producers was Shaun Cassidy. The serial had a very impressive cast : Beau Bridges, Will Patton, Gloria Reuben. But 'Agency' suffered because of  a very bad timing. The pilot, about the planned lethal attack on western countries was to premiere at the CIA headquarters on September 18, 2001. The episode with DC was called 'War,Inc.' and was one of the last episodes of that unlucky serial. It was aired on CBC on April 26, 2003. David played a wealthy CEO, who lost over 200 employees on 9/11. He was very convincing in the role of that hunted man, Everett Price. He also looked just fabulous , mature and very handsome..and his voice..what a shame he didn't...

Rock Me Baby /Johnny Cymbal, Peggy Clinger/

Image
This is not a post about  DC's great hit , but about his ..famous boots. He looked incredible in that video ,and I bet he had a lot of fun too. Poor French cameraman didn't know what he liked best - David's boots or his long amazing hair , or his outfit..I love this video. This is the best copy that I know about , but because it belongs to that ego-maniac.., our dear Gary J. B... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSAAyoRd8gE And a lunchbox...In 1990 David again had those boots on..and there was a lunchbox too.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6fcdhQn32M Yes, This is a post about The Spirit of '76. . 1990  was very busy and very important  for David Cassidy. A new album, a new rock image, a movie ..and a new life. Let's start from the movie. The Spirit of '76 was released on 12th October, 1990. It was a science fiction comedy, about three time travellers (from 2176) who by mistake found themselves not in 1776 (as they wanted), but..in 1976. This is not the best co...

When I'm a Rock'n' Roll Star /David Cassidy/

Image
I love the recorded album's version of that song ( from 1975)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOojp5r5qYU&list=RDJOojp5r5qYU&start_radio=1 DC as  a songwriter..I'm not objective , I love most DC's music  for many reasons, but of course  writing about a song that 'it's great' is not enough. I've just checked (on the DC website) how many songs he wrote or co-wrote - 60. Some of them were his versions of someone's elses songs, kind of covers, like most tracks from the 'Romance' album. Those songs were originally written by Alan Tarney for Cliff Richard. DC was a great interpreter, I wrote that many times..Anyway, 'When I'm a Rock'N'Roll Star' (like a whole album - 'The Higher They Climb The Harder They Fall' )was his very brave and sincere attempt to became a serious artist. And it happened that at the end of the 80s ,DC played  a fictional rock star 3 times : on stage, in a tv series and in a movie. And in a tv...
