The Love Boat

One other anniversary in November. The Love Boat. The episode with DC was aired on Nov 8, 1980, ep #4.4. David was just one of the guest stars, and not the most important one. And 1980 was a very difficult year for him. 30 year old  former teen idol ..who (as it seemed at the time) had hit bottom. It's scary when you think about DC's life and career in 1980.

After the last Man Undercover episode, which was aired in January 1979, David waited for a new role a whole year , to January 1980 when he was on..'Fantasy Island' ( his old TPF's network, ABC), what more his new recorded music on which DC worked for quite a time wasn't released, and in June 1980 Ruth Aarons died. It was another personal  huge blow for David Cassidy.

"When she died, I realised I had been so protected and kept away from the business that I had no professional relationships or connections.(..) I was completely lost, because I had known nothing but her guidance. (..) I was crippled by her death. Had she lived, my career would not have had such a large hole in it.(..) we had started to set a lot of my goals in motion(..) Then she died and it all died with her' (D.Cassidy;'Could It Be Forever?, 2007)

One of those unrealeased songs..'Hurts So Bad'..I love this song, and DC's voice at the time, mature and emotional.I just can't find right words..someone wrote in a comment -'velvety' and  we can hear how he wasn't afraid to bare his feelings, his interpretation is very personal

And 1980 was also the last year of his marriage to Kay Lenz (I know they divorced later, not in 1980) and of the disastrous loss of money. "Around 1980 we lost a fortune. (..) It would take me all of the 80s to pay off the bank loans.(..) Our marriage became full of heartache and disappointment.". I think it was a year which changed David and had a great impact on his life, both professional and personal.

Another unreleased.. not the recorded, but the live fabulous version. Such a shame that when his voice was at his best..'Strengthen My Love'

David Cassidy on ' The Love Boat'. That were the only roles he got in 1980, on ' The Night The City Screamed' tv movie, and Fantasy Island and The Love Boat, both tv series Aaron Spelling's productions. But actually The Love Boat was very popular, that season 4th had the highest ranking, a lot of very known stars appeared on that tv series, including Shirley Jones, Meredith Baxter...and ..(I had a big laugh) ..Gordon Jump (6 episodes!) known from playing 7 different characters on TPF tv series. Really Hollywood was a very small village, just look who played Prince Hassan in the episode with David..

Yes, Pat Harrington Jr, wonderful actor who played ...Harry on 'Danny And the Mob (TPF.S1). And David with moustache..What to write about his acting? Of course he was very pro and funny, that was the kind of role in which the look was the most important. He changed so much over the decade.. real chameleon man.. He looked different, but his eyes and smile and screen charisma were the same..
