Shades Of Grey / Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil

Always loved that song.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncd1yTTk5rw David Thomas Jones (30 December 1945 - 29 February 2012 ). A singer, an actor, a multi-instrumentalist, a businessman, a jockey, a father..a teen idol. Another great artist from Manchester. He wanted to be a jockey, but resigned when his mother died when Davy was 14 years old. Very early success on stage in 'Oliver!' on West End in London and on Broadway in New York. He was nominated for Tony for it. And appeared on the same historic Ed Sullivan show as The Beatles. Davy Jones : ' I watched The Beatles' from the side of stage, I saw the girls going crazy and I said to myself, 'that is it, I want a piece of that.' Signed a contract with...Screen Gems, and debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 being 19. That's his first solo hit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dG82nvGC4X0 The rest is history..And this is amazing that after many years of writing that The Monkees was a manufactured band, an opinion

He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother / Bobby Scott, Bob Russell

I've had this song on my mind for a few last days.  The original version was recorded by Kelly Gordon in 1969. I have never heard about him. A known producer, he also recorded one solo album.  Born in 1932, died in 1981 of lung cancer.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fq4HYZg9HNc But life is not fair, and someone else's version became a worldwide hit the same year..I love the Hollies and Allan Clarke's voice. One of the most beautiful songs ever recorded.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jl5vi9ir49g And David Cassidy. With Osmond brothers. In London, April 14th, 2007.  I can't say that I know much about the Osmonds, even if their songs were played on our radio in the 70s and at school parties. 'Puppy Love' of course, that was Donny. And Jimmy had a song I really didn't like..you know about someone..long haired and  from (poor) Loverpool.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YriPIujLtsA It was a great hit whatever I think about it.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?

Message To The World / David Cassidy, Sue Shifrin

A war is going on just behind our border and already we have more than 120 000 refugees in Poland. A sea of people, mostly women and children, their husbands and fathers and brothers have stayed in Ukraine to fight. So maybe it's not time for writing about David Cassidy ? Of course it is. 1. Because we should live normal and don't panic. 2. Because David always cared and helped many in need. David Cassidy and charities and fundrising events..So many. Always, in every decade. In the 70s when he was the most busy David never said no. 'Keep Britain Tidy', ( and Keep Australia Beautiful) The Special Olympics. AIDS benefit concerts in the 80s. And his Golf Tournament and Alzheimer's charities, and so many things he did anonymously.  David Bridger : 'It was a time (in the 70s) when it wasn't fashionable in the rock and roll world to lend your name to anything that was establishment. (..) I don't know how he found time for everything.' So 'Message To

Rock Me Baby / Johnny Cymbal, Peggy Clinger

Image
Johnny Cymbal,( born in 1945 as John Hendry Blair) a Scottish- born American songwriter, producer and a singer. For a while a teen idol himself, after writing and recording that song. . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZr8iReEqMQ With his wife Peggy Clinger he wrote some songs for The Partridge Family. Peggy, a beautiful brunette, in the late 60s performed with her 3 sisters. She was born in 1949, died in 1975 of drug overdose. Johnny in 1993 of a heart attack..Here is Peggy in the lead performing with 'The Clingers'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-4Qb8K9xn0 For The Partridge Family they wrote together -  'It's All In Your Mind' (Shopping Bag), with Wes Farrell - 'Love Must Be the Answer' (Notebook), 'I Got Your Love All Over Me' (Crossword Puzzle) and from that last album also 'It's You'..'Hello baby, yes it's me again once more..'  Magic.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h98MKT_x6dU And they also wrote a song  first relea

( Whatever Happened To ) Peace, Love and Happiness / Andy Goldmark, J.D. Martin

Only one song could have been today.. From David Cassidy's album 'Old Trick, New Dog', released  in May 1998 on David's own label, Slamajama Records. DC launched it with Linda Blum, his business partner. The album was produced by 3 young musicians - Dino Esposito, Peter Brunetta, Scot Rammer. David wanted to achieve a modern sound but he also wanted to have control, so he was an executive producer. 'Old Trick, New Dog' was released 2 weeks before official street day over the Internet and in less than 2 days it was top 5 in online record sales. The single from that album, 'No Bridge I Wouldn't Cross' was an Adult Contemporary Top 25 hit in the USA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyJv061kTMI ( Whatever Happened To) Peace, Love and Happiness. .David Cassidy : ' It's a track that really reflected where I came from. I'm proud to wear it like a badge of my political and social attitudes' (D.Cassidy : Could It Be Forever?, 2007) https://www.

What Would Have David Thought..

Image
if he'd known what some his middle-aged fans do every day?? But let's start with a song. My request which was played on the Seabird Radio on Sunday. I couldn't listen to it, because of the hurricane Eunice, no electricity, no Internet. My American friend Judy, wrote to me that it'd been played.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7AL9JsKnz0 What it was what Craig J. said on 'The Last Session' ? Something about catching this still burning flame..'such a hungry yearning burning inside of me".. So what DC would said if he had known that during last 3 days I've been doing (only because of DC and his website) sth I always avoided doing at work. Google docs, Google sheets...Or how fans fight about his commemoration. even if it's long and winding road. For 2 weeks only 411 fans were persuated to sign the petition (London's Walk Of Fame). When 2 days ago I was telling my English friend about my current work for the website, she asked me: 'Why do

Steel Pier and The Official David Cassidy Website

Image
I've wanted to write  '1972. Concerts. Part 2. Steel Pier'. DC played there 3 concerts one day in 1971 and he broke the attendance record . The place wasn't prepared for a show like David's and so many fans..Truly speaking it's difficult to say how many. I've read in one place there were 50 000 and in another that 30 000. There was only one way in and one way out and nearly no security. And to get for those 3 shows DC really risked his life.  For the first one he arrived and left in an ambulance, but some fans guessed that DC was inside..for the second he walked all the way, right through the crowd, disguised as a woman.. Can you imagine..Amazing David Cassidy : 'I put on a wig, glasses, lipstick, rouge, the whole deal. It scared the hell out of me when I glanced in a mirror and didn't recognise myself..I thought, 'Damn, I actually look pretty good''. It worked like a charm'. ( David Cassidy : Could It Be Forever? , 2007) And the thir

1972. Concerts. Part 1. Madison Square Garden.

1972..Half a century ago, an amazing year for David Cassidy, with some incredible highes and a lot of work and stress. A strange year, he broke the attendance record at the Steel Pier, he played Madison Square Garden concert, but his Hollywood Bowl gig was cancelled because of the poor ticket sales. And sometimes he performed in half- filled concert halls. It was obvious that David's career in his native country had slowed down.. I just don't know where to start and how. If I were to write a serious book about David Cassidy the chapter called let's say '1972 - Didn't We Have Ourselves Kind Of A Summer', would be very, very long. Some outstanding, memorable concerts, but not all of them as successful as we used to think. 2 TPF's albums, 2 DC's solo records, more popular in the UK than in America, 23 The Partridge Family's episodes were aired that year, The Bob Hope Special.., The Naked Lunch Box. In 1972 DC was twice in in the UK, and also in Holland

'Hopefully I Will Be 70 and 80..'

Image
I've wanted to write about DC's February tv appearances, those from 1970 ( Bonanza and Adam-12), and his last one ever, on CSI. That episode was aired on February 27, 2013. DC's character was murdered in a lift (in an awful way). I saw that fragment some years ago, but today I've been searching but haven't found. Instead I've started watching that amazing interview, called 'Unscripted with David Cassidy'. I saw it some time ago, but today it has moved me..a lot. That interview is from 2008 (DC said in one place that his daughter Katie is 22), so  let's start with a song from that year, or rather a fragment from the Glasgow 2008 concert, when DC was trying to sing 'Could It Be Forever..' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnB2OqyZBWI Amazing..They were sooo happy together, David Cassidy and his fans..As it was still 1973. David's TV guest appearances, there is a list of more than 600 on The DC Official Website, and all the time something new

Together We're Better / Tony Romeo, Ken Jacobson

Image
Very unusual Tony Romeo's song because he didn't write it all by himself. His co-writer was Ken Jacobson ( the real name Kenneth Jacobson), who according to AllMusic has 225 credits as a songwriter. Haven't found much about him ( have to buy myself Johnny Ray Miller's book at last!). He was born in 1930, died in March 2012, 2 days after his 91 birthday.. It's one of those songs that only David could sing and he did a great job. I always smile while listening to it, from the start to finish. From TPF Notebook album, twice on the tv series.  I prefer this one : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ieKGyHir3U And I've thought about this song because of the wonderful gift all of the David Cassidy's fans have got from Timm McCoy. And of course it's not the first one he gave us. His 'David Cassidy Day 2018' is always with me, on my phone. 13 hours of DC's music. Now we've got amazing photographs. And not one or two. 50! And will be more! http://www

Am I Losing You? / Irwin Levine, L. Russell Brown

Image
Wrote by Irwin Levine (1938-1997), and L.(Lawrence) Russell Brown (born in 1940). Together they wrote a song which in 1973 became a worldwide hit and I never liked it. Even worse. Yes, that song's title is ..'Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree'. I used to go out of any room when that song was played on the radio. I was only 11 but I knew what I didn't like. But today I've given that song a try. That video has much more than 4 million views and a lot of comments.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtDQxJlcUxE Tony Orlando and Dawn ( those two ladies, the backing vocal group, it's a very long story why they were called Dawn). No, nothing has changed for me. Can you believe it that  in 2008, Billboard ranked "Tie a Yellow Ribbon..'as 37th biggest song(!!!) of all time in it's issue celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Hot 100 !! Number 1 - 'Twist' Chubby Checker..number 12..'Betty Davis Eyes', Kim Carnes..No David Cassidy of co

Strengthen My Love / Tim Moore

Image
Let's listen to a  beautiful song wrote by that gorgeous and very interesting man, and really an outstanding musician, Tim Moore. From 1974 - 'A Fool Like You'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVlSSnvrHGw Amazing..and I've learnt about him only because David Cassidy recorded his other song, and performed it live on tv. I love reading fans comments on YT, because you can learn a lot that way, some valuable info and also what fans know and think. And hardly ever anything surprises me. But once I've read something which really has irritated me (I think I've mentioned it in one of my early blogs).  Someone wrote sth like that - 'It was foolish that DC thought himself a serious singer and wanted a respect from his peers, because he sang bubble gum music and his peers were Donny Osmond  and Michael Jackson'. It was written with such  contempt and absolutely not true. I think I even wrote an answer to that comment. That Donny Osmond and Michael Jackson were (an

Night And Day / Cole Porter.

Image
Let's start with a recording from 'Wish You Were Here' and listen to 25 year old Jack Cassidy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBG4boIM_mI When David became a teen idol, he told many times that his father did nothing to help him in his career. On the contrary. It was an open wound all the DC's life. Even many years later he felt this pain . He said in 2011 - ' He (Jack) never said I was worthless, but his resentment would come out in these little mean ways. Then when The Partridge Family came along, he said in an interview that I got lucky with my success and that just broke my heart'. Of course Jack helped DC a little bit. He asked Ruth Aarons  to take care of David, he paid for his first professional photos, David lived with his father and Shirley in New York after his graduation..but it's not so important now and I don't want to write about that very difficult relationship. I spent yesterday evening listening to Jack Cassidy singing, also in a duet wi

'Song Of Love' / Adam Miller

Image
This song is just wonderful and its lyrics as if specially written for David. 'People everywhere seem to think, I won't survive one day I'll sink. Well, I guess I value less what they think..Than the song that I sing and the hope that it brings..' Maybe not very sophisticated, but so true. And the video with this song is really outstanding.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssYJMCtN1Z8 Wow..behind the scenes of TPF, so precious. "Song Of Love' was written by Adam Miller, and as the readers of my blog know, I have a little obsession on this man. Maybe not an obsession, but I really, really want to know more about him. And I'm not the only one, and at least recently have found a review of his album from 1972 (and waiting for an answer from the author of it) http://culturecatch.com/music/adam-miller What a title, 'Who Would Give His Only Song Away', and it seems that Adam gave his best songs DC.  He wrote 'Blind Hope', 'I Lost My Chance'

David Cassidy's Influence

Image
Fans try again to get DC into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. They write letters and I've also sent mine, we must  believe that maybe this time.. Anyway, a great lady from Canada, a wonderful and full of energy fellow fan Laurie Eby, has asked me for info on artists, musicians who have been inspired by DC. She already knows a lot, so I'm not sure that I can add more names. David inspired countless teens to start playing music and to be interested in music in general. A lot of them became musicians, music journalists and writers, radio personalities, actors. Louise Poynton talks with many of them on her podcast. And we can find a lot of such stories in her great book, 'Cherish. David Cassidy A legacy Of Love.' Lisa Marie Presley..she loved ITILY .. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aItTTid7Uy0 In the 70s DC  tried to educate his audience.  Even now he is still an inspiration for us, for me for example.  I learn a lot about music every day writing this blog. A lot of fans

Song For A Rainy Day / David Cassidy, Kim Carnes

Image
On February 24, David Cassidy's second solo album peaked at #2 in the UK. Maybe let's start with the song DC wrote with Kim Carnes.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wy6cLVQUTUU Oh yes, very sad..It hasn't been raining today (maybe a little bit), and I'm not sad..but disappointed. Not with DC, but with our petition for Music Walk Of Fame Stone Honour For David Cassidy. So many times we have said and written that people don't remember how important and huge and underrated DC was (and still is), and during 2 days only 194 fans have signed the petition. I know that everybody is busy, we have our lives, our problems, we are not young anymore and not all fans are on social media, and there are many who don't want see their names in print..but only 194..And I have the impression that everyday there are fewer fans or for whom DC, his legacy, is a closed chapter of their lives. As for some of my friends in England who said they were not interested in the petition. Anyway

then you are in the wrong place..' I wish I could have been there..David. January 16, 2015. Jazziz Night Life, Boca Raton, Fl. As he said, '20 minutes from home'. Amazing concert, and I've got a link to it some days ago from my American friend, Judy. Of course it's also on YT, but I haven't seen it for some time and it's been emotional watching today.  Those 2015's concerts are special, each one of them . And that year he performed 12 times. Here is 'C'mon Get Happy', B.B. King Blues Club, January 10 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7G8RAD8-3_A B.B. King Blues Club..David Cassidy performed in it in 2011,2012, 2013, 2015, 2016..and he played his last ever concert there, March 4, 2017. To play  in that blues club, situated in the heart of New York City's Times Square, it meant a lot for him. His native city and B.B. King. 17 year old David saw B.B. King in concert in LA, and was allowed to carry the famous 'Lucille', the B.B. King

Blog # 300. David..The Idol.

Image
300. A time to stop and think and maybe look back. I feel a little bit like DC in November 1972, when he said, 'It's going to be rough. I'm prepared for the worst. A lot of people aren't really ready to accept the change'. Yes, it must have been so difficult for David, of course it was obvious that at the time it was nearly the end of his  fame in the USA, but he was a huge star in the UK. He could have been a teen idol much longer, singing the same sweet-bitter love songs. It's very difficult and sometimes impossible to change people's perception. Jake Austen wrote about David in his book  : 'Cassidy's bitterness is understandable. It's hard for bubble gum music idols to get any respect after their brief moment on top, and it's nearly impossible in the sitcom world to move on after playing an iconic character. So David was doubled-.....' (TV-a-Go-Go : Rock on TV from American Bandstand to American Idol, 2005) Maybe let's watch and li

David Cassidy Live. Albert Hall 1985. A Review.

Image
I always remember what one fellow fan has told me : 'Do you know Weronika where does the word 'fan' come from?' Yes, I know. A fanatic. And it was during the discussion about 'I Write The Songs' and Barry Manilow's version..Of course it's not easy to be objective when you are a fan, but it was a very valuable lesson, and no offence taken. And I read everything about DC and  always  try to have my own opinions. David Cassidy was an amazing live performer, and even those who didn't like him, his style, his image, they had to admit it.  Chris Welch, very known English music critic wrote in 1973 (for Melody Maker) ;' he is a professional entertainer, happy in his work, and possessed  of a wealthy degree of talent. A rather disappointing verdict for those who came to mock, but Cassidy is a lot better than many a teen idol who troded the boards of the Empire Pool before him. He showed he had real vocal ability and an understanding of the art of rock th

I'm A Man / Jimmy Miller, Steve Winwood

Image
A blog about..some drummers and 2 no existing films, just don't know where to start. Maybe with the song which has been on my mind recently First the original, co-wrote and sang by that music genius, at the time 19 year old Steve Winwood, a boy from Birmingham.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLaPO79hrM0 Amazing. The music and the lyrics.. A very known and important track, in 1967 number 9 in the UK and #10 in the USA. Co-writer, Jimmy Miller, was a famous American producer and a very talented drummer himself (he played on Rolling Stones albums too).  And of course we know that David played drums very well, so let's listen to his outstanding version of that song. It was performed live (not only there) on March 11, 1973 in Rotterdam, and I can see that I actually  once wrote a comment (with this video) 2 years ago -'Only for this he should be in Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame'. Because his version was performed with such a power. It's a great rock number. Fantastic pe

I'm Here You're Here/ Wes Farrell, Gerry Goffin

Image
A masterpiece..Not only the song but also the way that music scene was filmed, and I remember watching it for the first time, I don't think I heard the song.. I just couldn't believe that someone could look like David.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GvLCj4sCfU But what for they filmed the kids and Shirley..? Amazing. The song, we can call it 'a noir ballad', from The Partridge Family second album, 'UpTo Date', released on Bell, on February 12, 1971. Peaked on Billboard 200 at #3 in April 1971 (53 weeks on chart) . Great hits - 'I'll Meet You Halfway', 'Doesn't Somebody Want To Be Wanted', 'You Are Always On My Mind', 'Morning Rider On the Road', truly speaking all songs on that album are great.  Recording dates - May16 and November 12 and 13, 1970. Some of the tracks used on this album were left overs from that profilic sessions for the first record. David's vocal is truly outstanding, even that we know that his voi

David Cassidy In London. 1972. Part 2.

Image
So David Cassidy came to London for the first time. But not a hundred fans waited for him, but many, many more. It was insane. It was like everybody, fans and the press alike fell in love with him. 'They had me doing press interviews throughout my whole stay in England, from the moment I'd wake up each day until I went to bed. In a week I became a big national name. It was overhelming.' (David Cassidy : Could It Be Forever?, 2007) But when exactly DC arrived in London ? It was Saturday, 5th February. A short note appeared  in a popular American music mag called CashBox : 'David Cassidy, pop singer and co-star of TPF tv series will be in England Feb 5 through Feb 10 on a promo tour on behalf of Bell Records. A press conference has been scheduled, and there will also be individal interviews in addition to a special guest spot on the Top Of The Pops tv show.' Yes..and a lot of special press editions on DC's visit in London, like that one:   http://www.davidcassidy.

David Cassidy In London. 1972. Part 1.

Image
There are some photographs on my desk. The members of my family, those pics are changed very often by me, and there is also one pic which  is always there, and sometimes I look at it, especially while writing my blog. It's not an original pic of course, and  it's not  very good quality, a little bit blurry, and maybe frames should be different.. but I like it that way. It was made half a century ago. When David Cassidy came to London for the very first time. In February 1972. On that pic he is looking straight at the camera like he wanted to say : ' Hey people are you not fed up with those pictures??' David in London in February 1972, the beginning of that never ending love affair DC had with his UK fans. At the end of 1971 DC was very tired, because of constant working, and unhappy (Meredith B.), and he also wanted some privacy, so decided on holiday in Europe. People there didn't know The Partridge Family and his face. It was 3 weeks of real and much needed freedo

Every day with my first morning coffee I read new articles I got on my email. From Google. That's an important part of my daily job for our website. I read everything what is written about DC or TPF. When there is sth interesting I send it to our webmaster to decide what to do with it. And actually there is a lot of info everyday. Sometimes DC or TPF are just mentioned in articles on completely different topics, but anyway I read everything. And today morning I've read a transcript from the conversation on contemporary tv programmes (also reality) for kids, and in one place someone said : 'In the 70s kids only watched (or had) shows like  The Brady Bunch and The Partridge Family. And they were all false. None of them was real life.' All false..Let's see this fragment from TPF. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbNqyj5hhrs Of course I watched TPF just a few years ago, being very adult and a mother myself. But that article's made me think about what I liked watching
