Night And Day / Cole Porter.

Let's start with a recording from 'Wish You Were Here' and listen to 25 year old Jack Cassidy.

When David became a teen idol, he told many times that his father did nothing to help him in his career. On the contrary. It was an open wound all the DC's life. Even many years later he felt this pain . He said in 2011 - ' He (Jack) never said I was worthless, but his resentment would come out in these little mean ways. Then when The Partridge Family came along, he said in an interview that I got lucky with my success and that just broke my heart'.

Of course Jack helped DC a little bit. He asked Ruth Aarons  to take care of David, he paid for his first professional photos, David lived with his father and Shirley in New York after his graduation..but it's not so important now and I don't want to write about that very difficult relationship. I spent yesterday evening listening to Jack Cassidy singing, also in a duet with Shirley Jones. There are only 2 pictures with this video and the first one is very moving, because it's just amazing how they looked alike, Jack and David.

And I think it was Jack's influence that DC became so extraordinary, unique singer. He was a kid from the 60s, he loved blues and rock, B.B. King and Eric Clapton, The Beatles and Jimmy Hendrix,  but he also from a very early childhood knew and loved other kind of music. The Great American Songbook, American standards, songs from the golden age of musical theatre. He not only knew those songs, but he saw the musicals on Broadway, and first of all he heard his father singing those songs at home. When in 1973 DC was allowed to record his first really own album, there was a song there which Jack'd used to sing in a bath..From 'South Pacific', and he performed in that musical on Broadway, in 1952. One of my fav DC's song..

Bali Ha'i and another standard, 'If I Didn't Care' wrote by Jack Lawrence in 1939.  David's version peaked at number 9 in the UK, in May 1974. Of course at the time the 20s and the 30s were in vogue again (also music) thanks to two great films - 'The Sting' (1973) and  'The Great Gatsby' (1974), and a lot of musicians recorded standards from that era, but DC really knew how to do it.

The older he got the more he wanted to record the songs Jack had taught him in the early 50s..Among them 'Night And Day' wrote by Cole Porter in 1932. The greatest artists recorded their own versions. Also David Cassidy, although only fans know about it. Singing that song was always very emotional for DC. This is the video from June 20th 2015. David performed during a summer outdoor concert, fot the partially very random audience, but like always he gave 100%.

And after the  song he said..- 'My father thanks you'
