Some Very Old Articles

Image
I spent quite a lot of time yesterday trying to make scans of very old articles from the 70s. They were about David of course. The Times, Daily Mail, Daily Mirror and The Sun. I brought them from England in May. I got them from my very good English friend. There is an interesting story how B. got them. She doesn't remember the year, probably 1974, she was in London visiting her grandparents, at the time was going one of the many national postal strikes (probably), anyway a lot of not delivered newspapers lay on the street. And she took them home and cut the articles about DC. Now it's not easy to decide from what newspapers some articles were. Or the exact day..A kind of detective work for me.. Maybe a song from 1974. The White City concert recording. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNGVKrFL2fg Those scans. That was hard, also because I have a new laptop, and it has taken me a lot of time to install everything. Now I can appreciate even more the scans Carmen has made, so many d

Love Is a River in Time

Written, no, no by DC, but by Andrew Gold and ..yes, Sue Shifrin. Of course it's David's song. Such passion, emotion and perfection. David Cassidy at his best.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sukzVzSy57g I have nothing against Halloween. On the contrary. We didn't have it when Poland was a communist country and I was a teen, and now kids here enjoy it the same way as other kids all around the world. I appreciate it even more than you could think. I studied librarianship, my specialisation was children's literature, books wrote for and..by kids, and we spent a lot of interesting hours with our promotor discussing the meaning of tales, traditional, folk and copyright. And why kids like to be scared. Why it's important. But every country has own traditions, and here in Poland, not Halloween, but  All Saints Day on the 1st of November is very important. It has a very long tradition, and the origin of it is pre- Christianity.  So people visit cementaries, light candles

The Partridge Family. Season 4

Image
I'm writing the synopsis for "Pin It On Danny', the episode from Season 4. When I finish it, the S4 will be completed. Only 3 episodes left to finish our project.  The Season 4. We can read in the article from 'People Magazine', published on June 17th, 1974 :  "He (DC) had outgrown his ABC series, TPF. 'It was four years on the same set, same faces, same words,' he says, 'My God, it was stagnating'. The public felt the same way. Consigned to a euthanasia time slot opposite 'All in the Family', the show finished at last count 64th among the 64 series on the air, and has been cancelled..' From the episode 'Miss Partridge, Teacher', a fragment of one of my fav TPF's song. Written by Wes Farrell, Danny Janssen and Bobby Hart. And just wonderfully sang by David Cassidy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJZRRekOYqk Yes, we know all this, there were many reasons, and of course DC had enough, was so tired and exhausted,  on the m

Driving With David..

Image
Something very short and personal this evening. I thought that  I'll not write anything today, was so busy in Warsaw..but I've just returned home, to my forest, 10.30 p.m. is maybe not so late, but not in the place I live. But the song first, wrote by David Cassidy, Gerry Beckley and a true legend, Brian Wilson, sang by David, Gerry Beckley and Jay Gruska. 'Get your car, get your car..' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQO4CWkFBn4 I must confess that sometimes  ..maybe  not laugh, but I smile when I see the pics with DC as a guardian angel. But how many times, when I'm nervous or have some problems, it's enough to start driving and listening to his music to calm down and smile again. I have no idea how many kilometers I drove in the company of David, his music. A lot.. My all neighbours know my car and the music I play in it, and sing. The first 2 km from my house is just a local country road, you can't  drive fast, also because of animals walking that road..

or Jack and David singing together on Merv Griffin Show on August 23, 1971. It's impossible not to be moved when you hear the young David's  magical voice..That interview was so important and difficult  for the 21 year old DC. And singing with his father. At least we have the audio of it.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kc5ZZ0iSFbk&t=63s I thought about this recording yesterday evening. Columbo again on one of the tv channels. Last week was the episode with Sal Mineo, yesterday with Jack Cassidy. His last one, from 1976. He appeared 3 times on Columbo. On the episode called 'Murder by the Book', aired in September 1971 (directed by Steven Spielberg), "Publish or Perish', January 1974, and the one I saw yesterday, one of the most memorable Columbo's episode ever, 'Now You See Him..'. Jack as The Great Santini, once ex-Nazi, Stefan Mueller. It was the first time yesterday since the 70s that  I saw this episode from start to finish on a quite  big

David Forever or The Entry nr 500

Image
I didn't want to write about it, who knows after all how many entries I've written so far, but it's a nice opportunity to publish some pics and listen again to ..'Crazy Over You' and watch this outstanding video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AK5AQzoRG4 What a fantastic song. A rock ballad, so full of passion and desire, and the DC's voice..Wonderful.. So after nearly 2 years  I'm writing the entry number 500. Before I started writing (in December 2020) I got some advice. From my oldest daughter who once wrote a very popular blog about Korea - 'Think about your readers, who you want to write for?' and I answered that ..for myself, for an average fan like me, who still loved DC, wanted to learn more, or read again and watch..listen. The other advice was from Louise Poynton, who was so very kind and always encouraged me. Thank you so much. But it's not me, doing something according to plan. No, I can't. I really regret..On the other hand the

David as a Spooky Kid

Someone called that the DC's character on 'Joey's Here', the 'Matt Houston's episode. David Cassidy played a genius and a dreamer. John Gordon Boyd. But a song first. DC performing 'Gettin' It In The Street'. I thought about that program watching Matt Houston. How he changed from 1976.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1X6JK-ncfrM Watching 'Joey's Here' turned out to be very useful. First of all, I've noticed that there is a wrong date on the website. December 1983, and  it should be December 1982, the first season of that tv series, and it makes a difference. For me at least, I always thought it was the DC's last role before he appeared again on Alfred Hitchcock on May 1988. But really the last role was on Fantasy Island, January 1983, nearly a year difference. When you write about someone on daily basis verified information and dates are a priority matter.  Of course the website is huge, errors are inevitable. I'm dyslextic,

'Just Close Your Eyes And Let Me Run Away..'

I wish I could have seen the Wes Farrell's face when he'd listened to the demo of this song for the first time. And what he was thinking. About the boy who looked like million dollars, had a fabulous voice and could write such a song, just like that. Not an ordinary teen idol, no. What a shame, the demo no longer exists.  DC: 'I wrote it in about 5 minutes the day before I was about to go on a tour (..) The song just fell out of me. As soon as I wrote it, I decided I was going to record it. I held on to it. (..) I got a few musicians together, went in this little studio and played the guitar and sang the demo.' (David Cassidy : Could It Be Forever?, 2007) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfkF3QUZhjo Such a strong ballad, absolutely not worse than any other track on that great album, 'Cherish'. And the lyrics..still so moving, now even more. And I thought about 'Ricky's Tune' yesterday. October 21st, just one month left, and it will be 5 years. That&

A Knight In Shining Armor

Image
The last episode from The Partridge Family Season 1. First aired on March 19, 1971, and the script was written by the TPF's creator, Bernard Slade, and there is a reason I write who wrote a script for that episode. Bernard Slade (May 2, 1930 - October 30, 2019 (yes, already 3 years have passed), was born in Canada, but his parents were English, and they returned to their native country in 1935. Bernard spent World War II as a child evacuee, moving constantly and attending 13 schools in 7 years. He returned to Canada when he was 18, and  struggled to make a living as an actor, a theatre producer and playwright. So he had to took odd jobs to make ends meet, like..handing out leaflets on the streets of Toronto dressed as..a knight in a full suit of armor.. From that episode, 'Stephanie', wrote by Richard Klein, John Henning and David Price. And sang by two teen idols, Bobby Sherman and David Cassidy.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcvR80bRJhE So yesterday I was writing a syn

1976. The Year..

And the number, I wish as many fans had signed the petition. So far 1137. Let's start with a song, something what David Cassidy recorded in 1976. His own song, and such an unforgettable performance. 'leave me gently..so my heart doesn't break.' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6QGYBCU4pI I have watched it so many times (like each and every one of us) still so moving, and..you know. David Cassidy was a great singer, not only the most beautiful man ever.  PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION https://chng.it/NgppymDR6K 1976..It's because of Columbo. I'm a great fan of it. It was one of the few American shows shown on our tv in the 70s. I watched all episodes and I remember how I was scared of Jack Cassidy..He looked like someone from another planet in my eyes, and of course I had no idea that horrible man had a son..David. I also thought that all the people in America had big houses, tennis courts, swimming pools. After half a century everything has changed. I still watch Colu

'Did David Cassidy Really Like Heavy Rock Music ?'

I've been trying for at least a week to write about the DC's cover of  Left Banke's hit, 'Walk Away Renee'. And I couldn't. Everyday something or a new thing or problem or whatever emerges. It's not that I'm a fan of that song, personally I always call it - 'Walk away Renee and never come back'. It can stuck in one's head. But I've learned to trust the DC's musical choices and the story of the band and the story behind that song is amazing. 'Walk Away Renee' was written by teenagers, the inspiration was famme fatale of course, a beautiful, tall blond aspiring ballerina. I also found another not so romantic story about the origin of that song. Anyway I can't say this is my fav DC's track. I think he did a cover of it because it was a hit when he was 16 years old (I remember a lot of songs from 1978 when I was 16 and in love), and maybe he knew a girl called Renee. Who knows.. There is a charming guitar solo in the mid

'Goodbye, hello..I've got to go..'

Wrote by Paul Anka (and Wes Farrell whatever it means) from that outstanding TPF album, 'Sound Magazine'. Also one of the most memorable David Cassidy's performance as Keith Partridge. From the episode called 'The Diary Of Mad Millionaire', Season 3, ep. 24 (73) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AoqEHtrK5jQ Truly wonderful music, and those lyrics..it's scary really, how this song now looks like was written just for him.' the price of fame..'. Of course that's the life of a professional musician or actor, a professional entertainer. And I've thought about this song today while reading comments on my yesterday's entry. The Gerry Beckley's interview. But first David Cassidy and 'One Night Stand' live, in Chicago, in 1991.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUKEeaRvE-U What a performance..I'd have been screaming too I'm afraid. So  I've got an impressive feedback, thank you very much, I think that interview, that fragment abou

'I Was Good Friends With David..'

Image
This is something which has really made me think today. The interview with Gerry Beckley published yesterday by  Joe Matera on www.goldminemag.com.  As the readers of my blog know very well, I'm a huge 'America"s fan. I became a fan when I had no idea about DC, and for me it was something wonderful and very moving when I learnt about their friendship, and the songs they had  written and recorded together. David and Gerry. This one for example.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izpXaXfdBZA In the yesterday's interview Gerry Beckley was asked about his work with DC. What was that experience like ? He didn't answer this question directly, he said that he was good friends with David, and how happened that he produced the DC's last RCA album. He also said sth about The Last Session and  I want to quote his words : ' on the documentary he (DC) is truly one of those tragic figures and most of it was self-inflicted wounds in his case, and he wrestled with his own de

From The Partridge Family 'Shopping Bag' album, released in March 1972. Season 2, episode 17, 'Waiting For Bolero'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2woKodvin0 It happens to me a lot, maybe not 'everywhere I go', but quite often, that I want to say..:'But David Cassidy..', and sometimes I say something and sometimes I don't. Btw Louise Poynton has found such a great title for her podcast, DC Connections, there are so many. And last Sunday around noon I drove to my town to fetch a guest from a train, and to my astonishment there was literally nowhere to park. Normally at that hour on Sunday our town is deserted, but not that time. There was a really impressive flea market with a lot of sellers and buyers not only from Warsaw, but also from other parts of Poland. Because my guest missed the train I had some free time, and I spend there a very nice hour.  One more song from 'Shopping Bag', great DC vocal performance 'Something New Got Old

'What Are You Doin' Tonight?'

Image
This is the last sentence from the article I want to write about today, but first our petition, The London Music Walk Of Fame. We are not doing very well recently, 1126 signatures, and it's going painfully slow, and I haven't wanted to write about it..but. Some days ago Jane has published on the website my new TPF's synopsis with some screenshots, and it's got more than 2,5k likes..Wow! And a lot of comments, rather typical, 'he was all over my wall' or 'the most gorgeous man ever', you know. How to make those fans sign the petition ? DC wasn't just a pretty face, he wasn't Keith Partridge. And btw The Wings Of Pegasus, 'Was David Cassidy One Of The Most Misunderstood Music Artists?' video has more than 62 000 views.. Nearly 1k comments. Just amazing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHIyW75FYlk&t=29s The link to the petition, in case someone decides to sign https://chng.it/NgppymDR6K So 'What are you doin' tonight?'... For

This is a fragment of a poem wrote in 1975, by Nancy from Glasgow. It was published on The David Cassidy Magazine,  the issue no.41, October 1975. There were 43 issues of that magazine in total, the first one in June 1972, the last one in December 1975. 58 Parker Street, London. Editor Pat Wallace, could be Patricia or Patrick. At the beginning it costed 15p, at the end 30. I'm a former librarian, I always check such info first, I can't help it, a book or a newspaper I want to know how it's been done, by whom, how many copies, prices..everything. Maybe a song, the video was made by Sharron to support London Music Walk Of Fame Petition. David was a huge star there, even had an own the UK magazine so please SIGN THE PETITION https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dt-x0ZQYWzE&list=PLIHq1iCLCzGwbwnXp68EBtBOSIwn7rxgK&index=8 I have several copies of The David Cassidy Magazine myself, and it's amazing in what excellent condition they are. Somebody Wants To Love You / Wes Farrell, Jim Cretecos and Mike Appel

One of my favourite. So very uplifiting, performed and sung with such a bravado, I can bet they had a lot of fun recording it, those wonderful experienced musicians : Dennis Budimir, Louie Shelton, Tommy Tedesco, Joe Osborn, Max Bennett, Larry Knechtel, Mike Melvoin, Hal Blaine and that 20 year old boy, for the first time in the recording studio, David Cassidy. This song was recorded on the same day as "I Think I Love You'. On May 16 th, 1970.  DC : ' I was nervous. I didn't want to screw up or cause problems for all these pros who had no idea who I was. We'd be chatting and I'd hear some voice on the loudspeaker saying, 'Could you please ask the singer, whatever his name is, to shut up?' Or we'd start to do a take and some voice would request, 'Can you ask the singer not to slow down?', or 'Can you ask the singer not to rush?' I was totally overwhelmed by the experience." (David Cassidy : Could It Be Forever?, 2007) Only Dennis

At last I've found some time to have a look at The Melody Maker File, 1974 annual, 'from the world's greatest music weekly'. I brought it from England in May, also some other interesting DC's memorabilia, including a bag. To take them I've had to leave behind at the Paddington Hotel some clothes and a pair of shoes. But it was worth it.  My friend B. wanted to get rid of her collection so I've had to rescue something. But it's only today I've really had a closer look at The Melody Maker annual. Of course I've read the Chris Welch article from it many times, his review of one of the DC's 1973 concert at Wembley, but it's a difference reading a scan of an article and have an opportunity to see an original issue with it Once again Weekend at Wembley, this particular video was published last year, a whole doc, including the whole of that extremely interesting interview. David Cassidy at work, on stage, and that other one answering those quest

I know some fans (they are my friends), who don't appreaciate the songs DC recorded after 1990. They were loyal David fans in the 70s, they still own his old albums, but they just are not interested in the music he recorded, or performed later in his life. They want to listen only to the DC's pop songs, mainstream music. It's difficult even to argue with them. Sure his voice was different, truly speaking in every decade, but always so fabulous, after 60 sometimes so full of pain even, amazing really how he sang blues standards. This is so real, raw, so powerful, full of passion. My English is not good enough to describe what I feel listening eg to David Cassidy singing Feeling Alright in 2013...it almost hurts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wmzks_GNNUE What an amazing performer. Only knowning his work through the years we can really appreciate his greatness. Those are big words, I know, but I'm sure David Cassidy was a great, unique, and one in a kind singer, so undere

The Pics

Image
David Cassidy's. Some specific and all of them. But first a song. I can't rid of it today, of course there are some great DC's pics in it, mostly from the teen mags and TPF's albums covers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utV6giIxkcw There are hundreds of thousands of David Cassidy's photographs. Photographers were always on the set of Partridge Family, shooting the stars of the show for magazines. Of course mostly David, fans bought those mags and cut his pics for..I don't know, maybe millions of scrapbooks. I wonder how many of them still exists. The 70s was the golden age of teen magazines. And David was the biggest star of them in the first part of the decade, Millions of girls bought those mags. They waited impatiently for a new issue, for new info, but first of all for new David's pics, for new posters with the most beautiful boy ever.. And everywhere he went ..David Cassidy : 'I couldn't go anywhere without signing autographs and having photogr
