The Battle for the Boppers

At last I've found some time to have a look at The Melody Maker File, 1974 annual, 'from the world's greatest music weekly'. I brought it from England in May, also some other interesting DC's memorabilia, including a bag. To take them I've had to leave behind at the Paddington Hotel some clothes and a pair of shoes. But it was worth it.

My friend B. wanted to get rid of her collection so I've had to rescue something. But it's only today I've really had a closer look at The Melody Maker annual. Of course I've read the Chris Welch article from it many times, his review of one of the DC's 1973 concert at Wembley, but it's a difference reading a scan of an article and have an opportunity to see an original issue with it

Once again Weekend at Wembley, this particular video was published last year, a whole doc, including the whole of that extremely interesting interview. David Cassidy at work, on stage, and that other one answering those questions..like 2 different people.

The Melody Maker File, on the cover we can read what is inside - "128 pages of brilliant features and pictures of the giants of today's music". Some DC's friends among those gigants too.

In the part called 'The Year Of Outrage', there are articles about Alice Cooper, David Bowie, Elton, Slade, Roxy Music. Another section is called 'The Gigants Rock On' - Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, ELP and Brian Wilson, 'Rock and Roll Women', anyway in total 24 articles.

The one about David is in the section called 'The Battle for the Boppers' (the other one article is called  'The Osmonds' of course), and I'm sure because of that title a lot of people simply didn't read those two articles. What a shame. Those hateful words, 'boppers'. 'teen idol', 'bubble gum music'. Nothing could change the DC's perception. Whatever he performed on stage..

The Chris Welch article is so interesting and so worth reading. A very known music critic, who saw everybody and everything, who knew what he was writing about, went to see one of the David Cassidy's Wembley concert. He wanted to form his own opinion, he wanted to see himself. And it's still moving reading what he wrote about David the phenomenon and David the musician..In one moment Chris Welch was moved himself by that genuine love which connected the young audience and their idol..

And : 'He is a professional entertainer, happy in his work, and possessed of a healthy degree of talent. A rather disappointing verdict for those who came to mock, but Cassidy is a lot better than many a teen idol who has troad the boards of the cavernous Empire Pool before him..'

Of course..
