'The Partridge Family Doesn't Live Here Anymore'

Image
I've had trouble today with the title. First I've wanted it to be, ' A band was a fake but David Cassidy was the real thing', or 'David was the engine that made this music work'. Both quotes are from the doc about The Partridge Family, from the series called 'Behind The Music'. It was aired for the first time exactly 25 years ago.  Maybe a song first, it was played (fragments) several times during the 44 minutes of  the documentary. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqBc549rcF4 I watched The Partridge Family Behind The Music a few years ago, when I didn't know much about the show, the people who created the music for it, and even about DC himself. I've watched it again today in the morning, and I'm still under the spell.  I've posted the link to it on our David Cassidy Great Britain Legacy Group, but I think it's not enough, and I want to write something more about this very interesting documentary.  1. First of all we can see some wond...

Susan Dey..on the LA Law Reunion

Image
I've thought I would not write about Susan Dey's birthday. She will be 70 on December 10.  We know everything, but on the other hand nothing about her, she is a very private person. But of course we love writing about Susan and David. They were so beautiful and there was such chemistry between them on the set of TPF. The way they looked at each other. After all these years they became a truly iconic, romantic couple from the 70s, there are still quite a lot of articles about..you know. But of course this is not our business. Only Susan and David knew how it really was. Her mother died when Susan was eight, she started her career as a model in the late 60s, and she became a role model for many teenage girls. She looked so gorgeous, and e.g. wasn't afraid to take part in one of the first campaign encouraging girls to use tampons. The campaign was also educational,  called 'Getting To Know Yourself'.  Laurie Partridge, she was Susan's alter ego. No character in t...

November 1970..

Image
November, the  month so special for us, David Cassidy's fans all over the world. And not only because of the upcoming anniversary, btw it will be a very difficult day. Someone wrote a few days ago, 'it's surreal'. Yes, 5 years and we still can't come to terms with it. Maybe a song.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wy6cLVQUTUU November was always a very busy month for David Cassidy. A lot of memorable concerts, tv appearances, also as a guest star on many tv programmes, promo tours. Today I want to write about the November 52 years ago, November 1970. The month David became a star, and his song became number 1 on the Billboard chart. The first song he ever recorded.  He didn't play concerts at the time, but he was so busy, I don't think he watched the Partridge Family's episodes aired in November 1970. 'Danny And The Mob', 'But The Memory Lingers On', 'Did You Hear the One About Danny', 'Go Directly To Jail'. Danny..those e...

The Partridge Family. Season 4

Image
I'm writing the synopsis for "Pin It On Danny', the episode from Season 4. When I finish it, the S4 will be completed. Only 3 episodes left to finish our project.  The Season 4. We can read in the article from 'People Magazine', published on June 17th, 1974 :  "He (DC) had outgrown his ABC series, TPF. 'It was four years on the same set, same faces, same words,' he says, 'My God, it was stagnating'. The public felt the same way. Consigned to a euthanasia time slot opposite 'All in the Family', the show finished at last count 64th among the 64 series on the air, and has been cancelled..' From the episode 'Miss Partridge, Teacher', a fragment of one of my fav TPF's song. Written by Wes Farrell, Danny Janssen and Bobby Hart. And just wonderfully sang by David Cassidy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJZRRekOYqk Yes, we know all this, there were many reasons, and of course DC had enough, was so tired and exhausted,  on the m...

Danny, Keith's younger brother

Image
Shirley's children obviously had different fathers, but they were a great family. It's hard to imagine anyone else playing Keith, Laurie or Danny. And Tracy. And even Chris, although there were two of them. But someone else could have been Danny. Danny Bonaduce : 'They had two Partridge families at the end, and we shot two shows. Shirley was the Mom in each. David, Susan and the other kids were all in one family and I was in the other family with the bunch of other kids. The other family got the job. But Jerry (Paris, director of PF pilot) went to an editing booth and edited me into a scene with Reuben that I was never in. So I'm talking back and forth with Dave Madden and it never really happened. He showed the producers, they hired me on the spot, and we shot the third show and I got the job.' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTHW5rjHqhY The excerpt I quoted comes from an interview Danny Bonaduce gave for www.cmongethappy.com. Exactly he was interviewed by Gilmore ...

Workin' On A Groovy Thing / Neil Sedaka, Roger Atkins

Image
or 'The Partridge Family's episode I've never seen'. 'Maid In San Pueblo'. I saw it only yesterday. So the song first..   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRN792lClEg How to put it..Not very suitable for Chris or Tracey, or the PF's young audience. David's interpretation of The 5th Dimension's hit from 1969 is very sensual. His voice like melted honey. Wonderful, but not for kids. Anyway this recording was never released on vinyl. Let's listen to The 5th Dimension. The arrangment and vocals from another era.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O61xIdRTTDQ But how did it happen that I watched that episode only yesterday? I got the whole TPF's collection 4 years ago as a present. It was so extraordinary, so generous, and very unexpected. I felt like a little girl who got on Christmas the largest doll house in the world.. I just couldn't believe it. So for a few days I was too overwhelmed to actually watch them. At last I decided to start, from ...

A Pic Found On Pinterest

Image
The David Cassidy pic. But first a song. As DC said himself: 'a sweet little song..' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaUBUdO-lco Before writing a new entry I usually go for a 3 mile walk and think about what I'm going to write about. And it works for me beautifully. But recently I've been very busy and had no time for walking or thinking about DC and my blog. So I don't know how this entry will look like and where it will take me. I only know that I want to write about that David's pic found a few days ago on Pinterest. As you can see it was taken on the set of one of the episodes of The Partridge Family. Season 3, Episode 17, 'I Left My Heart In Cincinnati', first aired January 26, 1973. A pic taken between the takes. DC must have been very happy, because Johnny Lee Bench was a very famous baseball player. He is a true legend, actually just 2 years older than David. And as we know DC was a great baseball fan. But the reason I just love that pic is that ...

A Cincinnati Whizzer Yo-yo

Image
I'm writing a new synopsis (btw not many left). Season 3, Episode 22, 'The Partridge Connection'. First aired on March 6th, 1973 (David was already in Europe). A very interesting episode. 1. Make-up. As DC wrote himself : 'At 23, my face caked in 3 layers of make-up. I made less convincing teenager than ever'. He looked gorgeous as always, but yes, mountains of foundation, an eyeliner etc. 2. The theme of that episode - stealing and the influence of friends. Of course stealing is very common at that age (and don't tell me it's not true). I know, I remember how it was to be a teen, (and I'm a mother and a former teacher). David also wrote about it in his autobiography, those bicycles he ..took when he was 13. 'I'd always return them or I couldn't have lived with myself. Stealing wasn't really a part of my life. It was more that if I saw a rule of any sort, I'd think, - Let's see how can I break this? Or bend this?  Being told not t...

'I guess he was more like a brother..'

Image
Suzanne Jesse Crough about David Cassidy during her interview published on www.cmongethappy.com. She said : 'They (her friends) couldn't understand why I wasn't in love with David.' 'Why weren't you?'..he was more like a brother.' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtAv3gY8iLo She knew what she was talking about. Born on March 6th, 1963 in Fullerton, California, Suzanne was the youngest of 8 children, started her acting career in commercials. While in The Partridge Family she took riding lessons and got her first horse when she was 10. She showed horses till the age of 18. I wonder if David had known about it.. After TPF she appeared on another tv show, this time short-lived,  called Mulligan's Stew. In 1978 Suzanne did a dock-drama called 'Teenage Father'. I've been searching for it everywhere, it must be somewhere, because its director, Taylor Hackford (Helen Mirren's  husband) is 1. a very known director, 2. he also wrote it, 3. he go...

The Partridge Family.

Image
Every day with my first morning coffee I read new articles I got on my email. From Google. That's an important part of my daily job for our website. I read everything what is written about DC or TPF. When there is sth interesting I send it to our webmaster to decide what to do with it. And actually there is a lot of info everyday. Sometimes DC or TPF are just mentioned in articles on completely different topics, but anyway I read everything. And today morning I've read a transcript from the conversation on contemporary tv programmes (also reality) for kids, and in one place someone said : 'In the 70s kids only watched (or had) shows like  The Brady Bunch and The Partridge Family. And they were all false. None of them was real life.' All false..Let's see this fragment from TPF. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbNqyj5hhrs Of course I watched TPF just a few years ago, being very adult and a mother myself. But that article's made me think about what I liked watching...

Susan Dey

Image
Susan Dey's birthday was on December 10th, she is 69 years old now. Difficult to imagine, for us she is Laurie Partridge forever, Keith's younger sister, who tended to annoy him so many times. But if necessary they were so loyal to each other. The chemistry between the members of that family was real and it's one of the reasons that TPF is still such a joy to watch. And  great acting. (Of course the main reason is David..) Susan was a beautiful teenage model without any acting experience when she got the role of the eldest Shirley's daughter. Laurie is very pretty, sweet, innocent and  sensible. Even stiff compared with Keith and Danny. It's only from Season 2 that Susan Dey could show that she also had a comedy talent. Episode 22, one of my fvourite, 'The Partridge Papers'. Susan, David and Danny must have had a lot of fun doing it..Temporarily trespassing.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3W5aHlu_B14 Truly a very talented actress. And life wasn't easy ...

TPF_S2E3 ..'A Man Called Snake'

Image
From the start, and I think it was in July, I thought it was a great idea. To write  synopsis for all  The Partridge Family's episodes. The Official David Cassidy Website is an amazing huge library. For many years countless documents, priceless scans of thousands articles from newspapers and magazines, videos, memorabilia, fans' memories have been collected there. All of them, even if from time to time there are articles critical of David. But I feel it's very important to give everybody a chance to form own opinions, and I know that the real DC, a complex man and a wonderful singer and actor, was much more interesting than his image. The DC Website is sth very dear to my heart, and it's a great honour for me that I have my share in it. Jane, our webmaster, thought that writing TPF's synopsis would give fans an opportunity to contribute  to the website. To do something for David's legacy.  And all fans synopsis sent to Jane  were  great, the real labour of ...

Till There Was You / Meredith Willson

Image
David Cassidy never recorded that beautiful song, but of course he knew the whole soundtrack from 'The Music Man'. Jack taught him. DC : 'I sang mostly theatre stuff as a young kid, music from some of my dad's shows, like 'Wish You Were Here' and I learned 'The Music Man' when I was around seven. Years later I taught my own son 'The Music Man'. Because I could sing, I was always singled out in chorus and music and glee club. I was a soloist in the choir' (David Cassidy : Could It Be Forever?, 2007) 'The Music Man' debuted on Broadway in 1957, and in 1962 a movie version was made with Shirley Jones, David's stepmother ( I must remember about not fans who read my blog). Shirley was pregnant while the film was in production ( with Partick). When Shirley and her partner embraced during the footbridge scene, the baby kicked the man. The costume desingers had to adjust Shirley's dresses several times to conceal her pregnancy. So let...

There'll Come A Time / David Cassidy

Image
But first sth I've read about only today. Nothing important, but as you know I'm a huge America's  fan. And it's a very short note from Cash Box magazine from 12 July, 1975. It was published on the DC Official website - that DC during the America's  concert in Honolulu  was brought on stage by the group to join in singing 'Horse With No Name'. Wow ! I have no idea is it true or not, but I can imagine it. And Dan Peek left the group in May 1977..If only..Let's listen to David's and Gerry Beckley's song, one of my fav from 'Gettin It In The Street.. They should  have written and recorded more together.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWXx03VFVsY&t=146s So 'There'll Come A Time'. DC wrote some songs for TPF, with and without Wes Farrell, and 3 of them appeared on TPF's albums,  co wrote with Wes - Lay It On The Line ( Up To Date, 1971), 'Love Is All That I Ever Needed' (Sound Magazine, 1971) and his own - 'There...

Robyn Millan

Image
I learnt yesterday that Robyn Millan died last year. Someone published a post about the TPF's episode where she'd appeared as a guest star, 'Dora, Dora, Dora', Season 2 episode 1, aired 50 years ago, on September 17, 1971. And there was a comment about that episode that the script was poorly written, sexist etc. Maybe, no one would dare write something like that now, but the world looked different half a century ago.   I was truly sorry and sad yesterday because of Robyn. She started her short career in 1965, 33 credits, mostly tv roles - Mission Impossible, The F.B.I, Hawaii 5.0, Ryan's Hope, The Monkees. But we for ever would remember her as Dora, the girl Keith fell in love with, and Robyn, the girl David dated for a while.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmZnk9RFKm0&t=1s In December 1971 on Photoplay Magazine an interview with Robyn was published, she said about David, "He is just marvellous and really knows how to handle his success.(..) We hit it o...

The Partridge Family Season 4

Image
Season 4 , aired from September 15, 1973 to March 23, 1974 (btw that day DC on his World Tour arrived in Osaka )..The last and the least popular TPF's season, but I like it very much. There are some reasons.. 1. The music. Most songs from that season appeared on the last TPF album, 'Bulletin Board', (recording dates July 25, 26 and September 4, 5); the abum was released October 1973, the same time as DC's third solo album 'Dreams Are Nuthin' More Than Wishes'. It was very symbolic, 'Bulletin Board' wasn't selling well, "Dreams' very well, but not in America. David Cassidy's career in his native country was over, he played his last concert there in October 1972. 'Bulletin Board' is   not The Partridge  Family kind of music, lyrics..very adult, it's more like David Cassidy's solo album. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AL8oxCCi-M 2. Season 4 is very strange, with one very unusual and memorable episode which was filmed o...

Walking In The Rain / Barry Mann, Phil Spector, Cynthia Weil

Image
The original was recorded by a girl group, the Ronettes, it was number 23 on Billboard HOT 100 in 1964 (Phil Spector produced that record), and sure David knew that song from his school years..Simple but such  charming lyrics, about finding  a true love, a love at first sight ..some day.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4l5t1FUscUI On Wikipedia we can read about other versions of that song, but not a word about great David Cassidy's cover. I know it was The Partridge Family's hit, but it was David's singing which made that song so special. And his performance..wow..he was a true  teenage dream..to be on the set, who wouldn't want to, such a bad timing for me, I'm only a few months older than Jodie Foster..Seriously, this is a great cover. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtmgENKr3x4&t=52s I know that  anyone is allowed to edit Wikipedia, and I think this is something fans should do, whatever we think of Wiki, it's an important and very often a first and last ...

Happy Birthday Dante.. Daniel Bonaduce

Image
He was born Dante Daniel Bonaduce on 13th August 1959 in Broomall, Pennsylvania..Before The Partridge Family, appeared on 7 tv shows, the first one was in 1967. Both his parents were in showbusiness (writers). After TPF he was on (among other credits)..Police Story (1975), Fantasy Island (1978), That '70's Show (1998-2001, 2 episodes), Less Than Perfect (with David Cassidy, 2005), CSI (2006), and of course with Mark Hamill in the film called 'Corvette Summer' (1978), it was first Mark's appearance after the unexpected success of Star Wars.  A box office hit, even that critics didn't like it. This is the opening scene with..Danny. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCjCas1L6xM Danny on TPF..he was a true comedy talent, one of the best ever child actors, so natural and funny and with a such distinctive, great voice. It's not a surprise that later in life he made a career in radio. He was so good that many TPF's episodes were written with him in mind..And with...

Summer of 1970 I Think I Love You, Part 1

Image
I Think I Love You..recorded in May, released in August, and number 1 in November, on 21st, 1970. 6 months during which David Cassidy's life changed completely. In May he was one of many young actors in Hollywood, but already on teen mags' radar. David's pic was on the cover of 'Fave' in May. His picture was the smallest, the largest Bobby Sherman's. June 1970 -  first Tiger Beat cover. August - 2 covers on Flip, and Tiger Beat again. The rollercaster was starting to accelerate.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NncG_pm338 The first articles about the upcoming new TV series appeared at the beginning of August (at least those  I know about), and they were mostly about Shirley, with just a few words about David, being her stepson etc..But people started sending letters, forget Shirley, they wanted to read about David. And they wanted to know everything. In September the articles changed - they were about David, with just a few words..that Shirey was his stepmum.....

The World of The Partridge Family

Image
Such an album was released in 1974, but this post is not about music. It's about how the world has changed ( or maybe not ) during those 50 years. But let's start with a song..The Partridge Family singing in their garage.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miD6zZwRPVs This is amazing, how the 70's fashion is in vogue again. They could have gone dressed like that into the street and David..he would have looked sensational.. I'm spending this summer with The Partridge Family, taking screen shots for the DC website. It's a very pleasant job and while doing it I'm thinking about the differences between the 70's and the world we live now. (I'm not thinking about Covid) Of course The Partridge Family was a family sitcom, a comedy, it wasn't realistic, had not a lot in common with real life. Keith never returned home late, drunk..or Danny never was caught with a cigarette..they never quarrelled with Shirley, no slamming of the door, no tears or real pain..b...
