November 1990..

Image
November 25, 1972, 'Rock Me Baby' single, #11 in the UK. November 24, 1973, 'Dreams Are Nuthin' More Than Wishes', #1 in the UK for 1 week. That one must have been just wonderful, to be the best on the UK chart in the year when so many great albums were released. An American artist better than own English stars. But nothing could be compared to that success in November 1990. After 18 years the name David Cassidy appeared again on the Billboard chart. That was so rewarding. After so many disappointments, to hear an own song on the radio, watch video on MTV, be successful again in his native country. That meant a lot for David, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJMMSWJosRs It's a great song, fantastic video, and 'Lyin' To Myself' should be much higher on the list than number 27. David was in great shape. His voice so powerful and he looked like a true rock star, 'still a teen idol material' as someone wrote in one article. DC worked extremely har...

Wish You Were Here / Harold Rome

First the original..the one Jack Cassidy taught his small son, David. Recorded in 1952. 70 years ago.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7boNC9Sbv34 65 years later at the end of his life David Cassidy knowing that not much time was left, was struggling to record it. We write quite often that we still miss David, especially on the 21st of each month, it's scary how many passed. But I've thought that, you know, I've come to terms with it, time is a great healer. And I never met him in real life, even never saw him in concert. I'm just a fan.  So David Cassidy is like any other person we knew and liked or loved, and we cherish those memories and we smile thinking about the past, but we don't cry, we are just grateful. Like when I pass by the block of flats in the center of Warsaw where I used to live and was so happy many years ago. I always smile. But sometimes an old song on the radio, a painting or pic, even a stranger who looks like an old, dear, late friend..make us...

Some Kind Of A Summer / Dave Ellingson

Image
The songs David Cassidy chose for 'Then And Now' album. Those the most important in his career. What a shame only 'Daydreamer' from "Dreams Are Nuthin' More Than Wishes', and from his RCA albums only 'I Write The Songs'. What a shame he didn't record again 'Junked Heart Blues' or..'Rosa's Cantina', that perfect summer song. I can't resist to watch this video.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sp97MhR8ZCU Or maybe it's better that 50 year old David didn't record it again.. Those young, wonderful musicians had a lot of fun recording it in 1976, and we can still hear after so many years how they enjoyed that experience. The perfect moment in their lives for such a song. But I'm so glad that he made a new 'Some Kind Of A Summer' version. Dave Ellingson :'I got the idea for the song, 'Some Kind Of Summer while Kim and I were driving back to Los Angeles from San Francisco in the summer (a wonderful ex...

Hi Heel Sneakers / Tommy Tucker (Robert Higginbotham)

I've recently talked with my very close English friend, B. about those amazing covers DC's recorded during his career. And my friend was a huge David's fan in the 70s, but now DC is a history for her and she doesn't read my blog. But sometimes she asks me how my writing is going. And she's told me that DC's covers are nothing extraordinary, that everybody do covers, people just forgetting that such and such a song was written and recorded in the past. A new clever arrangment and a new hit is born. Recycling. Of everything. Don't be so naive, Weronika. Yes, of course that people forgetting, I myself was so astonished some years ago when I learned that  'I Fought the Law', one of my fav The Clash' songs, was a cover, or that 'Girls Just Want To Have Fun' was written from a man's point of view, and Cyndi Lauper's hit was a cover too. And David didn't do more cuts than others did, and quite a lot of songs were written just for him...

The Last Session. June 11th, 2018

Image
Yes, it's difficult to believe but it was aired 3 years ago, in June 2018, on A&E. This doc  aroused emotions from the very beginning. From the moment the work on it started. The family  wasn't happy, or even more, also some fans. Me too. We were afraid ..it's obvious why we were. I even wrote a letter to the network against the upcoming doc. It was a very emotional time, so soon after David had left us..It was hard just to write those words -' he died '. We discussed the film no one saw, on the DC website.. In May 2018 posthumous DC's jazz EP called 'Songs My Father Taught Me' was released,  when for the first time I was listening to 'Night and Day' and heard David obviously struggling to sing those words about '..yearning burning inside of me..'. I started to cry.. It's a great record.  It was #1Amazon Jazz chart, #2 iTunes Jazz Chart, #13 Billboard Jazz Album Chart. David Cassidy among the greatest. I wrote an emotional letter ...

On The Beach With ..David Cassidy And Timm McCoy

Image
I've just returned from my holiday. 2 weeks of sun, swimming..and more swimming..and listening to DC's music on the beach..Actually to David Cassidy Day 2018, the great gift we got from Timm McCoy. It was  3 years ago on the day which should have been David's  68th birthday... I don't usually listen to this programme, I have some CD's in my car for every day listening,..I save Timm's DC Day for my holidays..I was listening to it on my trips around the UK and in the U.S. and on every flight and on every beach I was, I'm so grateful for those priceless 13 hours of DC's music... The timing..In April 2018 we were still so ..in shock really. It was difficult to imagine the world without David ..and me and a lot of fans were disappointed that David Cassidy (and Glen Campbell) was omitted at the Oscars..Of course, he didn't really played in movies, but David was a pop icon and he had such a huge impact on many lives..And with each passing month. we fans rea...

Crazy Over You...David Cassidy Unreleased Songs

Image
There are such songs..You listen once..ok, not bad, a next rock ballad about wanting someone really badly..but after 15 minutes, without any reason , you want to listen once more..and after 24 hours you are completely addicted. This is such a song , unreleased DC's  hidden gem, 'Crazy Over You' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AK5AQzoRG4 David Cassidy played that demo (and some others) on the Mark and Brian radio show in May 1989 (I wrote about in in the post from 20thMarch)..Those others were 'Treat Me Like You Used To' and 'I'll Never Stop Loving You'..Both were much safer, less risky, much more 'hit' potential..Maybe.. Unreleased DC songs, there are quite a lot of them ,there  are some pages dedicated to unreleased tracks on the DC website, where you can find all info.  http://www.davidcassidy.com/fansite/DiscographyPages/UnreleasedLiveSongs.html David Cassidy started writing his own music very early, on the set of the first season of TPF. David Cassidy In Popular Culture. Part 1 . Music

This is something I've wanted to write many times and first of all to share with you some songs or articles I've found while writing this blog.  David Cassidy in popular culture.  What does it mean to be a popular culture icon? This is something or someone which or who is generally recognized, at once, it can be a popular belief, an image of a certain view, an object like a can of soup or an image of someone..Because also real  people can become pop culture icons...They are forever stuck in one moment in time..When we say eg 'Rita Hayworth' we can imagine her in 'Gilda', in her first dramatic role, singing 'Put The Blame On Mame' .It doesn't matter that she had a different name or that she starred in other films. She is like a beautiful butterfly, pinned forever in display case for all of us to admire..And when people hear ; 'David Cassidy'..they imagine  a beautiful boy with long hair, in bell bottoms, puka shells, singing I Think I Love You...

The First Concert 1971March26th I Can Feel Your Heartbeat

Image
The Partridge Family - I Can Feel Your Heartbeat (Wes Farrell, Jim Cretecos, Mike Appel)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3fPtMuBtMs The first ever David Cassidy's concert took place 50 years ago, on March 26th, 1971 , at Seattle Center Arena , in Seattle, WA. It was so long time ago that this buliding is not exist anymore . We know a lot about this concert , thanks to DC's autobiography, but first of all to Elliot Mintz. When he recorded his interview with DC in 1974, in Hawaii, he went to great lenghts to ask David about the smallest details of that first concert. This recording is just fascinating .Elliot was inquisitive , kept David on track with his story, and it's so moving to listen to young David Cassidy,  who himself tried to comprehend and understand it all. It's like being there with them. The part about this first concert  starts at 1.25.49 (for those who has  never listened to those priceless tapes). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=my9W-rohxVk&t...

Cherish, Part 1. The song/ Terry Kirkman/

Image
In April 1985 I fell in love with the American jazz guitarist  Pat Metheny. Jazz was always very popular in Poland, and even in the 80s, when Poland was still a communist country, a lot of great jazz musicians performed in Warsaw. I was at his concert at Warsaw's awful and huge Palace of Culture, with my husband and our best friend, we'd met in the 70's at school, we loved music, that friend played in a punk band, and we were at many concerts together.  I remember when we were walking back home that night, at least 5 km, in silence, just smiling, because that concert was once in a life-time experience, truly mystical, also for Pat and his band. Something absolutely unforgettable, out of this world. He performed in my country later many times, and he still remembers that night in 1985. And the connection with Cherish..Here you are : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbW4FmlN3M8 'Cherish' was written in 1966 by Terry Kirkman (born 1939) and recorded with his group The...

A Horse With No Name/Dewey Bunnell/

Image
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tm4BrZjY_Sg Recently I've read somewhere a strange comment. That David Cassidy wanted to be respected by his peers ,and his peers were Donny Osmond and Michael Jackson, teen idols like him...What's that supposed to mean? First of all it's not true, David was at least 8 years older..and you may like them or not . but Michael and also Donny have their place in music history, not only as teen idols....Yes, David Cassidy wanted to be respected by his peers , musicians from his generation , like e.g.  Dewey Bunnell (the author of my post's title song) and Gerry Beckley, co-founders and members of America band . They not only respected him, but also for two years in 1975 and 1976, worked with David on his RCA albums. Henry Diltz wrote (in 2019) about David, Dewey and Gerry -'Long time musical friends, they had a very spirited time singing together. We all miss David.'. They also wrote some songs together. Like that one , written by Da...

Breaking Up Is Hard To Do /Howard Greenfield, Neil Sedaka/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nh8VR5WuYy0 This is David Cassidy's third recorded version of that song. The first one was happy The Partridge Family's hit from 1972.  Smiling Keith sang it to lucky girls in 'Nag, Nag, Nag' episode (Season 3 12(61). Who could have left him... The second was a slower, sensual concert version on 'Cassidy Live!', and the last one from 'Touch Of Blue' album from 2003, so sad and moving, he is so unhappy, doesn't believe in good ending himself. This beautiful video was made by Anna Maria Ottengren. But the theme of this post is not David's music but YT's channels dedicated to David Cassidy. You Tube..I don't remember how we managed without it. About 85 000 videos post there daily. Unbelievable. Our source of information. There are channels were DC appears  occasionally , like on Style Record Group, where there is DC playlist with 73 videos from every decade, beautifully edited and remastered, really outstand...

Tony Romeo, 'Morning Rider on the Road'

Image
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqBc549rcF4  I have to admit, I'm on a mission, I talk and write about Tony Romeo a lot. Everywhere I could, I don't know if anyone is interested in him, but I don't care. It's so unfair that such a talented man is so completely forgotten and there is very little info on him. I've once read a blog, and the author confessed that he had a kind of obsession about Romeo too. That he was one of many, very talented artists who didn't achieve real success, didn't make it. David Cassidy wrote about Tony Romeo :'.he was one of the great lyrical and musical forces of the era- unique and very special. Through Wes (Farrell), Tony and I became friends.(..) Tony was romantic and he painted pictures with every line' (David Cassidy:'Could It Be Forever', 2007) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38XsRcDmTFc So true..painted pictures..his songs are like short films, the slideshow . He wrote some of the most memorable David Cassidy...

Cassidy Live !

Image
During his career David Cassidy played more than 600 concerts. The first one in Seattle on March 26th, 1971 , the last ever in New York, also in March, 4th, 2017. Three live albums were published - 'Cassidy Live!' (1974, Bell Records), 'David Cassidy : His Greatest Hits Live' ( 1986, Starblend Records), David Cassidy Live in Concert' (2008, Warner). We also have some audio recordings from the 70s , and videos of  his live performances on various tv programmes or concerts from every decade, we can watch and listen to them on You Tube. David Cassidy was a brilliant live performer, from the beginning. From that  very first concert, when he didn't know what to expect because  never before he was singing for such an audience - thousands of screaming girls.  'I needed have worried about whether the kids were going to like me. They were screaming- and in some cases fainting- before I got my first note out. I rushed through the show. Everything was going 150 miles ...

I Think I Love You /Tony Romeo/

Image
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2r9UtIhOI8M It's hard to believe but I think I first heard that song in December 1998..while watching the BBC great doc 'David Cassidy : Teenage Dream'.. Btw. what a great title, he was our dream..one David and millions of girls all over the world.  But in November 1970 when the song became number 1 hit in the US..I was 8 years old, I wasn't interested in music and we never had The Partridge Family on our tv..David Cassidy wasn't popular in Poland..I know this , because three or four years later, when I became a big music fan, and was listening to the radio all the time, I can't remember hearing his songs on Polish radio..It was like  Nationaal Archief, CC0, via Wikimedia Commons someone had decided (we had a censorship, Poland was a country behind the Iron Courtain) that David Cassidy wasn't good enough for Polish teens. Donny Osmond was ok..Michael Jackson, even Marc Bolan..but not David .When someone brought 'Bravo...

How Can I Be Sure /Felix Cavaliere, Eddie Brigati/

Image
I have forgotten a lot of things from the 70s..Can’t remember anything from science lessons or how the first boy I fell in love with  looked like or what  his name was....But I remember what I felt and what I was doing when I first heard ‘How Can I Be Sure’. I think I was 12..already a music fan..Sweet, Slade and  the music from the 60s..The Beatles..Animals, but mostly happy pop...something to dance to..Like hundreds of thousands in Europe I loved listening to Radio Luxembourg..it wasn’t easy, awful quality and I didn’t know any English at all..And I shared a room with my younger sister....But one evening I was alone, sitting at my desk..mostly dreaming..and suddenly….how to describe..the song was very short..left me full of unknown emotions, also sadness, and that wish to hear that song again..to hear that voice once more.Of course I didn’t catch the singer’s name.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVvkmFfq8I0 Nationaal Archief, CC0, via Wikimedia Commons It was so many ...
