Let's Dance!

Image
It's just amazing what a collection of articles we have on the David Cassidy Official Website. From every decade of David's career. The first one ever is from 1967, DC was 17, looking even younger, in this photo story called 'Surf City'. https://www.davidcassidy.com/fansite/InPrintPages/Mag1967Dig.html We have all those gems thanks to Jane of course, and many fans all around the world who keep sharing those articles with us. There is so much of it that it's not at all easy to find the information, there are mags', newspapers' and web's articles, and this collection is constantly growing. Recently, there have been published a few articles from 2007, about probably the least popular album recorded ever by David Cassidy. Released by 180 Music and Target, in February 2007, 'David Cassidy Part II : The Remix'. DC said about this project, "The idea (of the album) was brought to me by Jim Brandmeier of 180 Music. He did a special series of CD's...

More Than Words / Gary Cherone, Nuno Bettencourt

Image
This song belongs to the category 'a blessing and a curse'. 'I Think I Love You' for David, 'More Than Words' for Extreme. I hated it in the 90s, it was played everywhere, non stop on tv. Of course I had no idea that 'More Than Words' wasn't a typical song for those 2 sad guys..I was so busy at the time, I just had no time for music. So Extreme and a song very typical for them (as I learned much later from my English friend, B.), it's called 'Get the Funk Out', and I love it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqP76XWHQI0 Someone has written in comments, 'the most underrated band..'. It's a curse to have such a hit. Like ITILY , More Than Words became number 1 on Billboard Hot 100, in 1991. Gary Cherone about the song - '..it become a monster. It took a life of its own and we couldn't kill it (..) We were tagged the More Than Words guys..' David recorded More Than Words in 2003, for  his 'A Touch Of Blue' albu...

Breaking Up Is Hard To Do / Neil Sedaka, Howard Greenfield

Image
Neil Sedaka has birthday today. Born in 1937, in New York. 'Breaking Up Is Hard To Do' was his great number 1 hit in 1962, A real pop classic. A woldwide hit. An evergreen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbad22CKlB4 Of course I knew that song in the 70s, when I was a teen ..but at the time I thought Neil Sedaka was someone from another  era, very old and forgotten, and you know..I wasn't interested in such music. And I had no idea about The Partridge Family's cover of course.  Many years passed, and around 2010 I rediscovered Neil Sedaka. It's a little bit complicated and not many people know about it, but it was because of Neil and his album called 'Solitaire', that in 1972 one of my favourite bands was formed - 10cc. Neil Sedaka recorded that album in the famous Strawberry Studios, in Stockport, England. And he recorded it with the future 10cc members (they worked there, and Eric Stewart was a co-founder and co-owner of Strawberry Studios). The album was ...

Rock Me Tour 2002 Australia. Part 1

Image
The pic - David Cassidy and his fans at  Brisbane airport, 1974.. In 2002 David Cassidy played 35 concerts in the USA, 10 in the UK and after more than 28 years he performed again in Australia (8 concerts). Those concerts promoted 'Then And Now' album. Musicians who played with David on that tour : Lon Bronson - musical director, keyboards, road manager ; Jim McIntosh - guitar, Gary Olds - drums, Frank Fabio - bass, and Lisa Mayer and Candace Davis- Martin  (backing vocals). It was a kind of world tour which brought back a lot of memories. Everybody agreed that those concerts were exceptional. David was in great form, and they were so happy to be together again - he and his fans. 'There is not really that much difference between then and now- aside from the women's underwear. Almost 3 decades after TPF went off the air, the lust remains. DC said -' It's probably the most satisfying time of my life, I'm strapping on my guitar and feeling like I'm 19. The ...

Ain't No Sunshine / Bill Withers

Image
There are two reasons for writing about it today. 1. No sunshine here at all, the worst kind of winter. Now it's not so cold, but very cloudy, strong wind, raining and when it's not raining it's snowing..Dark at 4 pm..2. Someone's asked me recently why I write only about young DC?? Of course I write not only about the 70s or 80s..but..So today I will write about a song from 'Then And Now', the US release - April 30, 2002, 52 year old David Cassidy. First the  original, sung by the author Bill Withers. A great live version..with a very happy drummer. I love those comments, why he was smiling all the time..? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CICIOJqEb5c I've had no idea how amazing man Bill Withers was. Born in 1938, he died in 2020. In the 70s I loved 'Lovely Day'..another his timeless classic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7s6VbOEnsgk He was born with a stutter,  in a small town, one of 6 kids, his father was a miner who divorced his mother when Bill...

A Touch Of Blue, November 3, 2003

Image
That  David Cassidy's album was released in the UK on November 3, 2003 with a bonus disc with re-recorded David's old hits including three TPF's songs..Produced by Ted Carfrae, on Unviversal Music. You can see DC here advertises his CD on the UK tv http://www.davidcassidy.com/fansite/TvFilmPages/ATouchOfBlueAdvert.html From a review (rateyourmusic) : ..the arrangements are superb and David's voice is in fine form. Each song on this album has been carefully crafted and delivered by David in his distinctive vocal style. His own composition 'New York City Life' is up there with the best he was ever written' Yes, 'New York City Life' is amazing. But for me his new version of 'Breaking Up Is Hard To Do' is sth absolutely special and in my opinion shows why we love and appreciate David Cassidy's music so much. We remember TPF's version and  can hear how his voice  has changed during the years, after 50 so deep and blusey and soulful.  He wa...

I'll Never Stop Loving You / David Cassidy, Sue Shifrin, John Wetton

Image
Sue Shifrin started her songwriting career in the early 70s. At the time she also wanted to be a recording artist, but wasn't successful as a singer. The songs she wrote or co-wrote were recorded by many famous artists. Very famous.  Tina Turner, Cher, Heart, Pointer Sisters, Bucks Fizz, Meat Loaf , Lynsey de Paul, America. And  David Cassidy. On the 'David Cassidy' album (1990), Sue co-wrote 8 songs from 10, and on 'Didn't You Used To Be' (1992), 10 out of 10. In 1998 when DC recorded his next album  'Old Trick, New Dog' he said : ' This album is not overproduced like the previous one. When your life is in chaos, you try to find a way to simplify. (..) My publisher Linda Blum-Huntington, put me together with a couple of different writers. I was trying to get away from writing exclusively with Sue, which is what I did for the previous two albums.' (David Cassidy;'Could It Be Forever?', 2007) They wrote together some truly beautiful song...

New York City Life /David Cassidy

Image
An amazing, fabulous song from 'A Touch Of Blue' album..When I listen to it..I can imagine Fred and Ginger dancing to it..The lights and splendor and excitement of Broadway. Beautiful, elegant people. New York..the city that never sleeps..New York.. the city I was to visit in April 2020.. I'm so lucky that a new (great) tribute video with that song just has appeared on YT https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-4Zt6XnrY8 Amazing track, music and lyrics. David was really a very talented (and sophisticated) lyricist..Just a few words and you know everything, so clear, authentic, personal..His whole career, ups and downs are  in that song, and his love for his native city. And a short but accurate description of LA and his life there. And his voice. Mature and rich and sexy, warm..And the arrangment.. A fabulous song. David Cassidy loved New York, he talked and wrote about it many times. He debuted on Broadway as a teen, later he performed there again, in the 80s and 90s, working i...

Blackbird / John Lennon, Paul McCartney

Image
I've just returned from a very unusual holiday. A mountain range at the south of Poland, a magical place, forgotten by people . There are mountains all along our south border..but those mountains are like from fairy tales. It was my sister's idea, we used to go there on holidays when we were kids. I haven't seen my sister for 2 years (she lives abroad and has come to Poland for 3 weeks), such an unique opportunity to spend some great time together, those mountains are just 450 km from Warsaw, but it's a different world..And one day, while hiking, I suddenly thought about that song.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_bTcWq7ggM This is one of those rare David Cassidy's songs which has taken me some time (truly speaking a lot of) to really appreciate it. I never didn't  really like The Beatles' original, never thought about the lyrics, the meaning of it. It was written and performed by Paul McCartney, and yes, I liked it, but nothing more, one of the songs from...

Let's Dance ..With David Cassidy

Image
David Cassidy met thousands of people. Some of them shared his passion for horses or  music, some became friends ,  for a while or for life. We know that he could have been a very loyal friend. And sometime in 2006 he started working with a man, whom he later called his musical brother, a man who was by his side during those most difficult, last years of his life.  Craig J. Snider was born in Boston, received a degree in piano and composition, a composer, producer, remixer, songwriter, label owner and multi-instrumentalist. Very known producer and arranger on many productions that have topped Billboard's dance charts. In 2007 he remixed and co-produced very unusal David Cassidy's album , called 'David Cassidy Part II - The Remix'. Here is a really great dance version of 'C'mon Get Happy' from that record. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWRjWTM0SaI The CD was released in February 2007 by 180 Music and Target, and it was available only at the company's st...

Cry /Churchill Kohlman/

Image
Yes, that song wasn't written by Johnnie Ray. That's amazing, the things I've learned because of David Cassidy, like the story of that particular song. It was a big hit with Johnnie Ray's version in 1951, and Jack Cassidy loved that song and sang it to his small son. And later it became a very special concert song for DC. He recorded 'Cry' for his 'Then And Now' album in 2001, but first of all , David's concerts' versions of 'Cry' were always very moving and he thanked his dad for introducing that song to him. Here is DC singing it in 2008. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwsAPYYFlf8 This is one of the rare DC's songs I haven't liked at the beginning..I'm still not a fan of 'Walk Away Renee' or 'More Than Words', but I know it can change, it's happened before with some other songs , eg. with Cry. But let's return to 2006. David Cassidy played only 20 concerts that year. Some of them were performed in di...

2003 - Everett Price , Teri Cote, A Touch Of Blue, New York ...and God Bless America..

Image
David Cassidy did so many things in 2003 that I've just had no idea what title of that post would have been the best..Let's start from a very interesting, serious  tv role. He played in the tv drama called 'Agency'. The serial followed the inner-workings of the CIA and its war with Al Queada. One of the producers was Shaun Cassidy. The serial had a very impressive cast : Beau Bridges, Will Patton, Gloria Reuben. But 'Agency' suffered because of  a very bad timing. The pilot, about the planned lethal attack on western countries was to premiere at the CIA headquarters on September 18, 2001. The episode with DC was called 'War,Inc.' and was one of the last episodes of that unlucky serial. It was aired on CBC on April 26, 2003. David played a wealthy CEO, who lost over 200 employees on 9/11. He was very convincing in the role of that hunted man, Everett Price. He also looked just fabulous , mature and very handsome..and his voice..what a shame he didn't...

To Australia With Love..Again..

Image
David Cassidy  was in Australia for the first time in 1974. Between March 2 and 16 he played 6 very memorable concerts..He gave a lot of interviews, met with fans, and on April 22nd a doc called 'David Cassidy ; To Australia With Love was aired. This is the best copy of that film I know about.. It's just amazing.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XH9z0D9rTpQ&t=716s 2002 was the year of the 'Rock Me Tour' . David Cassidy started in February, played in the U.S. (25 concerts), in the UK (10 concerts ) and after more than 28 years he performed in  Australia, in November  (8 concerts). In 2002 he travelled there twice . The first time  in September (16-20) , it was a promotional visit , with a lot of  press and tv interviews. 'Then And Now' was released in Australia on September 9th. This is one of those September's tv appearances. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgyiJ8NYyAY On September 20th DC appeared on Good Morning Australia, the host was Bert Newton, ...

Ain't No Sunshine / Bill Withers

Image
Where to start..2001 was very busy and successful for David Cassidy but like all of us he was shattered by what had happened in his native city on September 11th that year. He still had a contract with Harrah's, and from February 14th to November 4th he played at casinos, but not as many shows  as he used to in Las Vegas. Not 7 or 8 shows a week but 6 or 7 concerts a month. That was a huge difference. David took his own band for those  tours - 5 horns, a 5 piece rhythm section, and 3 back singers : Lon Bronson, who sang, played a keyboard and was a musical director, Candance Davis-Martin and Lisa Mayer.  They played in Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, Missouri, New York, Nevada, North Carolina and Wisconsin. Sometimes they were driving all night long to get to some remote places. Sometimes DC didn't feel well. And some concerts were not available for fans as they were closed performances for invited  casino guests...Here  is a link to the very hot video with DC...
