Growing Up In New Jersey, And David's Sense Of Humor (Again)

Image
I haven't yet read all the articles published recently on the website, it's impossible. The sheer number of them and the new info.  I wish we had some kind of index to be able to find quickly what's in each article on the website. There are so many of them (articles), and even for someone like me, a former librarian and a DC maniac, it's became difficult recently to find something, and  it takes a lot of time.  Eg in one of those new/old articles DC's shared some memories about growing up in New Jersey. Maybe this is not something interesting for an average fan, but I love such details. And if we'd had an index, this article would have got 2 keywords - 'Concerts 2000's' and 'West Orange' or 'Growing Up - West Orange'. And it could be so easy to find it again, anytime it would be needed. Anyway during that phone interview DC was asked, 'What do you remember about growing up in New Jersey?'  And he said, 'I have a lot of gre...

The Show Must Go On

Image
It was hard to find an appropriate title for today's entry. 'David Cassidy a real workaholic'..'My First Night Alone Without You'..'One Night Stand' or 'We Gotta Get Out Of This Place'.. December, such a difficult and meaningful month for David Cassidy. Both his parents died that month, Jack on December 12th, 1976; Evelyn on 23rd, 10 years ago.  David divorced his first wife, Kay Lenz at the end of December, in 1983. DC : 'I was rather lost, feeling quite depressed over the divorce from Kay and the loss of my friendship with her.' It was such a great love story, but without a good ending. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DS32TrVNUY8 This is amazing, scary even, how hard he worked in December. Mostly on stage.  In December 1983 as Joseph in 'Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat' at the O'Keife Center in Toronto, and later with the same show, at the Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh. In December 1995 in the UK, in 'Blood Brothers...

December. Tell Me It's Not True / William Russell

Image
December. Even when David was a kid.. 'Generally,Christmas was one of the saddest times in my childhood because from the time my parents split up until I started seeing my dad in California, both my father and mother were gone.' ( David Cassidy: Could It Be Forever?, 2007) And both of them died in December, Jack, 45 years ago on the 12th, and Evelyn in 2012, on the 23th. DC wrote about that horrible day, December 12, 1976 in his autobiography, and I've written about this tragedy a few times this year. Parents and children. Father and son. Jack and David. They didn't have a chance to understand each other and forgive, build a relationship on an adult level. Maybe it could have never been possible. Poor DC was left with all that pain  forever, for the rest of his days.  It was  an amazing coincidence ."Shaun Cassidy :' I associate my New York experience (performing with DC on Broadway in Blood Brothers) with our dad and he was very successful on Broadway, he won ...

Rebel, Rebel /David Bowie

It seems that Shaun Cassidy is a little bit like a 'hot potato' for me. Some discussion still going on about what I've written, who was more popular David or Shaun..But only today I've found that 'Da Doo Ron Ron' is on the Billboard chart called "Greatest Of All Time Songs Of The Summer', on August 24 peak position -307 after so many years. But enough of this.  I'm a DC fan but I also appreciate what his younger brother has done and I write about facts. Of course I'd love to see David Cassidy popular and known all over the world. It makes me sad that he is not regarded as one of the best singers ever. Shaun  wanted to change his image, like before him David had tried. In September 1980 his last album was released, called 'Wasp'.  Produced by Todd Rundgren with the group Utopia as the backing band. The album has a 'new wave' feel. This is not my kind of music,  I can only say that the covers Shaun did were very ambitious - Pete To...

'We Were Lookin For A Young David Cassidy'..

Image
said the producer of The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries (because that was the original title of that tv series)  ABC just wanted to earn on a teenage idol. Shaun was the first to cast. He was 18 years old and was working very hard the whole 1976, filming first episodes and promoting his music. His older brother David was recording his last, great RCA album and becoming more and more distant and unhappy. The failure of 'Gettin' It In The Street' was a huge disappointment. He had no idea what to do with his life and thought that the situation couldn't be worse. Both of them didn't see his father much, and David not at all since early 1976....How to write about that day nearly 45 years ago.. 'The fire that caused the death of actor- singer Jack Cassidy (49) probably was started by a cigarette.', 'The blaze started in 33 unit building at dawn Sunday morning, December 12, 1976, sending more than 100 tenants into the street' 'Friends and relatives spe...

Lookin' For A Good Time / Wes Farrell, Danny Janssen and Bobby Hart

Image
or a very valuable lesson I've learned because of my previous post (about David and Shaun) But first the song.Truly speaking that trio, Wes, Danny and Bobby, wrote together some very good and memorable songs for TPF. 'Money Money' and 'I Wouldn't Put Nothin' Over On You' from Bulletin Board , 'Lookin' For a Good Time is also from that album), and 'Sunshine' (Crossword Puzzle), and 'Something Wrong' (Notebook), and Danny Janssen with Wes Farrell's help wrote 'Brown Eyes' and 'Twenty Four Hours A Day' (Sound Magazine), to name a few.. So the song, from the Season 4, episode 15, aired January 26, 1974. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OmAJJdMnoU So why this song and what about my lesson. The song is because I'm not 17 and  should think first before writing something, not to be so adventurous so to speak. And yesterday I wrote a post which has got quite a lot of comments. I've thought that  writing about David ...

David and Shaun. Part 1.

Image
Shaun Cassidy had a birthday 2 days ago, he is 63 now, and on September 27th  during my early morning walk by the sea, I was thinking a little bit about those two brothers and their careers.. Shaun Cassidy..it can be hard for DC fans, but I think that in the 70s Shaun was more known worldwide and now he is more remembered  than his older brother, David. Yes, I know they were half brothers. Shaun was ..huge, very, very popular, even in my part of the world, behind the Iron Curtain. This is his debut single, 'Morning Girl' from 1976, poor Jack Cassidy witnessed  another member of his family becoming very famous . Because it was obvious that Shaun was going to be a next teen idol. I remember 'Bravo' from 1976 and 1977 - mostly Bay City Rollers and Shaun .. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxVN_xQw3jc His first solo album called 'Shaun Cassidy', released also in 1976, next year it became multi-platinum, and he had a number 1 single in the U.S. with 'Da Doo Ran R...

As Long As There's You /Tony Romeo

Image
On the pic there is  Holy Trinity Church in West Orange , NJ , where David's grandmother was the head of the senior choir , and DC  became a member of that choir too , as soon as he was big enough.  His mother , Evelyn Ward was born in 1923  in West Orange , and her ancestors were among the founders of Newark, New Jersey.  A few days ago I published a post on DC's last concerts in the UK in 2012 , and at the end of it  I wrote that it was also a year when his mother died. And I've thought that maybe I should write a post on her . Of course , like every DC fan I know a lot about Evelyn , from DC's books , his interviews, I've seen This Is Your Life in which she took part, and  there are some pics.. But she had also her own career , and I've tried to find sth more about it . She was not only David's mother and Jack's first wife.  Let's start with that beautiful  song (great Tony Romeo again)  David/Keith sings for his screen mother , a rea...

Cry /Churchill Kohlman/

Image
Yes, that song wasn't written by Johnnie Ray. That's amazing, the things I've learned because of David Cassidy, like the story of that particular song. It was a big hit with Johnnie Ray's version in 1951, and Jack Cassidy loved that song and sang it to his small son. And later it became a very special concert song for DC. He recorded 'Cry' for his 'Then And Now' album in 2001, but first of all , David's concerts' versions of 'Cry' were always very moving and he thanked his dad for introducing that song to him. Here is DC singing it in 2008. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwsAPYYFlf8 This is one of the rare DC's songs I haven't liked at the beginning..I'm still not a fan of 'Walk Away Renee' or 'More Than Words', but I know it can change, it's happened before with some other songs , eg. with Cry. But let's return to 2006. David Cassidy played only 20 concerts that year. Some of them were performed in di...

Home Is Where The Heart Is..Part 3 Goodbye Blues

Image
'Just when I thought..' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfRFv0HYqkI Yes, it could be difficult writing about DC's houses and flats from 1977. He was constantly on the move, he lived where he worked, on the way he lost friends, beloved women , things and money. It was his painful private journey and I'm not going to write about it in detail. Maybe only about the things he lost, DC wrote about them himself. David Cassidy never was materialistic , on the contrary, and sometimes he lost things because was simply careless. DC wrote that he wasn't worried about losing them, but he really regretted when somehow he'd lost the gold record for I Think I Love You, it was his first award. I think maybe it was stolen, like his father's pocket watch which David Cassidy bought for $1000,  before the auction after his father'd died. But the worst was losing the ring David got from Jack. We all know that ring so well. We saw it on  thousands of pics, on TPF's episod...

Home Is Where The Heart Is..Part 2 Hollywood Hills and Encino

Image
Let's start this post with David Cassidy's cover of Bob Seger's hit about Hollywood nights 'I tell you a story... how she  broke my heart'..Great song , I love it, and brilliant Sharon's video..Like with every other song David was singing about himself.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5QTHSw15Ow When David and Sam (with the dogs) left their home in Laurel Canyon , DC for $1500 a month rented a fully furnished house on Haslam Terrace , high up in the Hollywood Hills, above Sunset Boulevard. Very posh and expensive place to live. (in whole 1969 DC earned $3000). Steve Ross lived with them from time to time.  They had a swimming pool and a great view..But fans found out the new DC's home very quickly. Some fans slept outside the gate at night ,and security became an issue . David Cassidy ; 'There were women showing up, unannounced, uninvited, at all hours. You may think this is every male's fantasy come true. And I'm not going to claim I turned d...

Home Is Where The Heart Is.. Part 1

And 'I'm On My Way Back Home Again and I Can't Go Back Home Again and Sing Me..David Cassidy wrote and sang songs about being on the road and about his lost home..During his life he lived in many different places, houses he rented or owned..constantly on the move.  He was born in New York , and he loved this city, even wrote a song called New York City Life. As a child he lived in West Orange, New Jersey , at 23 Elm Street ,with his grandparents , and his mother. Here is a great virtual tribute walk  video where we can see his home town, West Orange, and his home,  kindergarden, school, the church where he was a solist in the church choir, his playgrounds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5hnxViOh0E David's grandmother, Ethel died in 1967. His grandfather, Frederic Ward, who became a kind of surrogate father for David, all his life worked as an utility meter reader. He just could see his grandson at the moment of his glory, for David that concert was the most import...

Like Father, Like Son /David Cassidy, Sue Shifrin, Steve Diamond/

First let's listen to that fabulous song 'Like Father, Like Son', from David Cassidy's album called 'Didn't You Used To Be' ,released in August 1992 on Scotti Bros. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KPpdWop8zE It should have been a great hit.  So powerful and so personal , so brave because for DC his relationship with his own father was a pain for life. He wrote this song after his own son was born. 'Watching the birth of my son, was arguably the most joyous moment in my life.(..) Experiencing something that I never thought I would. Bringing another life into this world. Protecting him. Loving him(..) If you've never had a child, you can't ever imagine what's it like until it happened. And when it does happen, you can never be the same again.' (David Cassidy : Could It Be Forever?', 2007) Of course, DC already had another child, but he didn't have any contact with Katie at that time. She was raised by her mother and stepfather, it...
