David Cassidy's Sense of Humor

Image
I've always wanted to write an entry about it. It's not easy and rather risky thing to do, writing about the sense of humor of someone so complex and sophisticated like DC was. And of course I've never met him personally,  English is not my first language, and last but not least a sense of humor is an individual matter, and not everyone is entertained by the same thing. But I'm going to try. This is a very broad topic. Today part 1. I will use 'humor' as it it's preferred in American English. We all agree that David Cassidy had a great, wicked sense of humor, or as I prefer to call it - self-enchancing humor, it helped him to cope with stress and difficult situations. Shaun Cassidy said once about DC '..he has our father's great humor and great charm and great charisma when he wants to.' Exactly. When he wanted to. DC used humor in a very conscious way. As his defensive shield behind which he hid, but also as a tool of his acting workshop (if I c...

'I'm Very Conscious of How I Look'

Image
Jane published 40 new articles on the website, it was two days ago, and like a true David Cassidy's maniac I have read all of them today. But maybe a song first, my number 1 during my last week holiday at the seaside. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgP7t1Z44zE It's hard to believe this low number of views, 'Rosa's Cantina' is just sparkling with joy and laughter, makes you dreaming about holiday and having good time somewhere where is really hot, dancing and laughing, and I love the lyrics, like always DC didn't need many words to convey the mood of a song. And his magical voice, sure boys had fun recording this one.  Let's return to the articles. We are constantly looking for something new, so are they bring any new info? Yes, a little bit, nothing really big, but I'm very glad I've read them. So e.g. in the article published on Vancouver Sun, on August 21, 2006, we can read more about how David was marketed in the 70s, how his image was exploited....

David Cassidy in Scotland.

Image
Shawfield Stadium was not in Glasgow in 1974, but in Rutherglen, at the time it was still an independent town, the next year, in 1975, lost its own council. But of course it's so close to the centre of Glasgow, that even at the time was regarded as a suburb of the city.  Shawfield Stadium is closed now, it was opened in 1898 (can you believe it, amazing) as a football ground, but it was famous as a grayhound racing venue, the most important in Scotland. DC played there on May 24, 1974. We only know the hour of that concert (8p.m.), that it was Friday, we have a setlist, but no audio, I'm sure it must be somewhere, I can't believe nobody have thought about recording it.. Let's watch this great video and listen to C.C Rider. I love it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0RyxOgMRJzU Why writing about this great concert now? Because when I was in London on September 21st, I met two wonderful ladies. DC's fans of course, It's happened that the three of us came an hour e...

'I'm not cut out for show business..'

Image
Sometimes we hear or read something, don't think about it much, forget it actually, and suddenly, out of the blue remembers it, and such a thing has happened to me today. Truly speaking it was only yesterday when I read an article posted, I think on the FB group called 'The Partridge Family..Get On The Bus'. It was a short interview with DC, probably from 1974, I read it, even took a screen shot (I'm thinking about a book about DC so I gather info), and forget about it. Just another interview in which DC was asked what he was going to do after leaving the show.  Maybe a song first, I've been listening to the DC's 2nd solo album in my car today.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMcMSGkPWtM It was more than half a century ago, and David still looks just sensational. If this video had been made in 2023...An epitome of a rock star. Timeless. And while walking today I suddenly have thought about something DC said in that interview : 'I've come to the realizat...

'David Cassidy : Teenage Dream' and 'The Partridge Family'

Image
Two great documentaries, both were first aired in December. The first one in 1998,  the other, 20 years ago. Why write about them at all? We've all seen those videos many times. Yes, of course..but I've been doing sth for the website today, about the DC's tv guest appearances in December, through the years, btw we still don't have a lot of programs, and so many times there is incomplete date or info. Sometimes it's just a title, nothing more. But that's the way it is.  So I've been browsing, checking info, and ..instead doing something useful I started watching. E.g. I've completely forgotten about that DC's performance. On December 8th, 1997. The Billboard Music Awards. That year the most popular were Spice Girls, Celine, Britney, Backstreet Boys, Toni Braxton to name a few, They performed live during the Awards, also David Cassidy. He sang I Think I Love You, and the audience loved his performance. He didn't get any award, but the ceremony wa...

The Year Of The Daydreamer

Image
It's impossible not to think about the end of the year, and I'm again surprised that not many days left to another Christmas. And so many things to do. My calendar for the next year has already started to fill up. But who knows what the future brings. Anyway one thing is certain, 2023 will be The Year Of The Daydreamer' (at least for me) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EANv9_fwmmU Syon Park. I was there too, like David, only 45 years later, in August 2018. An amazing experience, in that deserted park nothing, absolutely nothing has changed since 1973. We were standing in silence, the five of us, like we were waiting for David to appear and start walking like in this video. We felt his presence. Of course it's easy to explain, at the time we were still so sad because of his passing, talked about him a lot..Yes, I know, but I always feel his presence when I'm in London.. As we know DC wasn't very impressed by that song, even that he knew it would be a great hit. I...

'David Cassidy Owned And Worn Jumpsuit..'

Image
There is a section on the David Cassidy Official Website called Biography. It consists of the following parts : Biography (a short one). The Early Years (just a few pics), Charities and Fundrising, Racing, Interesting Facts (a little mess there), Public Speaking, Public Appearances and Awards. This evening while doing sth for the website I've had to look at Charities and Fundrising. Wow so many events, I'm sure not everything is listed. And I've left my work and started reading. Just amazing. The events organized by DC and Sue, 'A Day At The Races', or 'The David Cassidy Golf Tournament', Kosovo Children, Voices That Care, Stand And Be Proud...  'Sondheim a Celebration', that concert took place on March 8, 1996, and it was to benefit the AIDS Service Centre and AIDS Healthcare Foundation. Very special, important event for DC, also because  that evening he sang with his brothers, Shaun and Patrick ('You Can Drive a Person Crazy').  And he sang...

David Cassidy Japan Tour. Chapter 7

Image
The time after an important event is always difficult. The 5th anniversary of the day David Cassidy died was 3 days ago. Some fans (including me)  met in London,  it was great to be together just for a few hours, talking and remembering DC.  Our pics from November21st have been published, some the DC's friends have shared their memories  with us.. Time to return to reality, to the world without DC and to our daily task to keep that flame burning. Keeping his legacy alive. It's not easy, the new videos or articles don't appear every day even that we search Internet non stop looking for sth new. Thanks to Lord Montagu and Sharron Liddle we have a new tribute to David, an information board near the location of the riverbank where David went fishing with the current Lord's mum in 1973. And a new chapter from DC Japan Tour 1974 appeared 3 days ago. Maybe a song first. It has been cloudy today, the first snow this year which hasn't improved my mood..Ain't No Sunshine....

Once a Teen Idol..

Image
We've had a lot of really amazing new updates on the website recently. A new tribute, a new tv appearance and a new radio interview. Everything has taken a lot of time, and we are so grateful for those fans who worked on them and shared that new material with us. Maybe a song first. My number 1 video (recently). I don't know how many times I've watched it. To be there..Just amazing and so exciting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbdootiYryo So I've checked how our new updates going on the website. What fans think about them, maybe they have an additional info (and they have in one case). But I wasn't prepared for that. Forget Lord M. and Beaulieu tribute or the DC interview for Canadian MTV, or the radio BBC 1985 interview.  The June 1973 Tiger Beat Spectacular magazine. The link to it (scans) with one of the DC's posters from it.  More than 14k views, nearly 2k comments, and more than 1,3 shares..Wow. Once a teen idol..I haven't read comments, I know what ...

November 1970..

Image
November, the  month so special for us, David Cassidy's fans all over the world. And not only because of the upcoming anniversary, btw it will be a very difficult day. Someone wrote a few days ago, 'it's surreal'. Yes, 5 years and we still can't come to terms with it. Maybe a song.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wy6cLVQUTUU November was always a very busy month for David Cassidy. A lot of memorable concerts, tv appearances, also as a guest star on many tv programmes, promo tours. Today I want to write about the November 52 years ago, November 1970. The month David became a star, and his song became number 1 on the Billboard chart. The first song he ever recorded.  He didn't play concerts at the time, but he was so busy, I don't think he watched the Partridge Family's episodes aired in November 1970. 'Danny And The Mob', 'But The Memory Lingers On', 'Did You Hear the One About Danny', 'Go Directly To Jail'. Danny..those e...

Do You Believe In Magic /John Sebastian

Image
Lovin' Spoonful was very popular in the second part of the 60s, they influenced The Beatles, they had a great pop success, they are in  Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. Not my fav band, but DC loved that music. I've read once an article, I think it was from 1972, (I can't find it now),  it was an interview with David Cassidy and he said he wanted to record 'Do You Believe in Magic' himself. After all, he did another John Sebastian's classic, and it's a great version, so uplifting, we can hear that just dreaming about this lucky girl made him happy. And I always smile while listening to it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZBBMTrjSig I've thought about 'Do You Believe In Magic' because Bobby Sherman had birthday yesterday, you know -  young girls and the magic of music and teen idols..I love reading old teen mags and watching teen idols of the past, that was something I couldn't do when I was a teen. Teen idols were forbidden in my part of the worl...

'David Cassidy Stopped Traffic..' Record Mirror Part 2

Image
So I'm reading the Record Mirror's articles about David Cassidy and thinking how a huge star he was, and what happened to his fans. Those who followed him everywhere and were ready for great sacrifices to take a look at him..just for a moment. Where are they now? (The PETITION!)  RM, May 20, 1972 : 'David Cassidy stopped traffic to downtown Pittsburgh when he visited radio station KQV recently. Police had to block off the street to accomodate the two thousand fans who braved 10 degree cold and a foot of snow that had fallen the night before. The crowd started gathering in front of the station at 7.30 am for Cassidy's half-hour visit that afternoon'.  Yes, it was in February 1972 and we have that radio show with DC on the website. We can hear screaming fans, David answering questions but also all the time watching the crowd and so often we can hear him asking fans to push back and not hurt each other..It's amazing and scary..He was always afraid that something ba...

There'll Come a Time / David Cassidy

Image
The song first. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsyUNt6G7-Q Oh yes, we took a good look and we knew he wasn't a circus clown. David was smiling singing this song. Of course Keith smiled a lot on stage, but this time it was David performing, rather than Keith (you know what I mean), and he was soo happy. His own song, without the Wes's name in credits. At least that one time. Time..he was only 22 (that episode was aired in March 1973. He had a whole life ahead of him. He was young, beautiful, rich and famous. We don't think about time when we are young or that one day we will be..old. Science fiction. But that song was recorded more that 48 years ago and today I've been thinking about TIME a lot. Since I've read that yesterday Michael Barratt died. He was 94. A lot of tributes, obituaries.. everywhere. He started his career very early, as a tea boy and horoscope writer on Sunday Mail. Best known as a main presenter on Nationwide from 1969 to 1977. For us, the David C...

David Cassidy - Teenage Dream

Image
What a great title for this really extraordinary BBC doc, directed by Karen Walsh, for me this one is very important. He was our dream and in a way still is, even that we are not teens anymore. Some of us have grandkids. That documentary was aired on December 12, 1998. And it was a sheer luck, an amazing coincidence that I watched it. In 1998 I forgot completely that once I loved music so much, I forgot how once I'd heard 'How Can I Be Sure' and how I'd fallen in love with that fabulous voice. I was overworked, lived in an enormous stress, had no money, was very unhappy and had no idea what to do with my life. And that evening I just had some free time, turned the tv on (we had a satelite tv), and it just started ..and I found myself in another dimension, another time.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxZ3q6WUvw8 Only 40 minutes,  they didn't change my life, but how completely stunned me. I never saw any of those footage, never had a teen mag in my hands, and seei...

Weekend At Wembley

Image
After my last blog on the DC tv biopic, my very good FB friend Laurie Eby wrote :' the documentary didn't do him any favors'. I think she's meant 'The Last Session'. We've discussed it a few times. Anyway, it's made me think about documentaries on DC we have. And  in my opinion, taking into account circumstances, we are lucky that we have a few quite good ones, even if they mainly about the 70s, David as a teen idol. Today I want to write about : Weekend At Wembley An amazing doc about those 3 crazy days when in March 1973, David Cassidy performed in London, made for the BBC series called 'This Week', It was aired March 22, 1973. I'm not sure we have a whole film, anyway it's a testimony of what a huge star David Cassidy was and what madness surrounded him. It's  also a proof of what a lot of journalists wrote at the time. That David looked like a teen but was very smart, very aware of what was going on, and he talked like a 30 year...

'He doesn't look like David..'

Image
There are a lot of ..things on my room's walls. It's a large room, my study, bedroom and living room rolled into one, with a wonderful view on my garden. So there are a lot of memorabilia, from my journeys, the things I've got, also postcards, some quotes from the books I've read or the songs I love..Recently I've heard my son-in-law saying to himself -'Don't let the time fool ya..'. No, don't. David's pics..Millions.. We post them, admire them, talk about them, know every single one, and all the time a new pic is discovered, and we are so happy..Middle aged women (mostly) so happy because  a very old pic, taken in the past century is posted for the very first time.. A pic, 50 year old, of someone who is dead. Let's face it, it looks strange, but of course, we are fans and sometimes it can look..strange. A few days ago someone posted a close up of a very known pic..David on a beach, in Hawaii, in 1973 (or 1972). Pukka shells..you know..the lo...

David Cassidy in Japan

Image
I'm writing today's blog completely without any plan and I have no idea where it will lead me. But I always wanted to write about David Cassidy and Japan. Even if I don't know much and I hope that maybe some fans from Japan can add something. When my sister visited me last year she noticed the photo immediately - 'Nice, David wearing yukata.'..'What?'...'a kind of summer kimono' (my sister was in Japan and even travelled there on her own). I just liked that pic and that's why I put it on my wall, but of course it'd been taken in Japan. And it's wonderful that it's not the only one. We have some those Japanese photos on the DC Website   http://www.davidcassidy.com/fansite/ConcertPages/1974March_JapaneseConcertPhotos.html David arrived in Japan on March 21, 1974 (from Hong Kong).Don Murfet, who was responsible for the security on the DC World Tour in 1974, wrote about that arrival in his book called  'Leave It To Me'. About 3000...

David Cassidy a Songwriter. Junked Heart Blues

Image
The songs David Cassidy wrote himself, music and lyrics..There is something special about them. Not easy to describe why, something magical and elusive, they are very personal and at the same time very general. So sincere and everyone who has ever been abandoned, ever has had a broken heart, understands his pain. The songs he wrote himself in the 70s..they were so sad also because David was unhappy in love. And I can't write about those songs and not say anything about his private life. ( as much as I don't like it) When he was a teen idol DC dated a lot of girls and some of them were written about as his love interests. David : 'I like to play the field. I haven't dated the same girl twice (April 1971) 'I'm not really looking for a steady girl', 'I dig someone who's settled, usually older than I am, who isn't that liable to do a lot of talking later (November 1972).  And in 2007 : 'A lot of women I met struck me as opportunists. They were us...

Empire Pool. March 16,17,18, 1973

Image
The Empire Pool, built in 1934 ..yes, originally housed a swimming pool. In 1978 the Empire Pool was renamed Wembley Arena. Currently is known as OVO Arena Wembley.  It's an INDOOR arena adjacent to Wembley Stadium in London. 10 000 seat in the 70s (now 12k). Everybody performed there, The Beatles 4 times, some very memorable concerts, and David Cassidy set notable attendance record during one weekend in March 1973. He sold out a record 6 shows in 3 days. 60 000 fans. It was a kind of a generational experience, everybody knew that they witnessed something special, a lot of articles, a documentary 'Weekend At Wembley', and so many times I read fans memories, each starting with such a statement :'I saw David at Wembley in 1973..' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ep42l7CacCY Of course, I've written about it many times, what can I add except my disbelief that it was 49 years ago. Two my very close friends saw DC at Wembley in 1973, and we talk about it from time to t...

March 11, 1973. De Doelen, Rotterdam

Image
The exctiement started much earlier. Lowell Sun (USA) January 26, 1973 : 'Scotland Yard, not exactly England's most trendy institution, is showing an interest in rock music - because an overwhelming number of tickets countefellers are showing an interest in David Cassidy (..) Despite the fact that tickets  to the tour concerts set for March 17 and 18 at Wembley are available only through mail application, kids who can't resist the bargain, or who want to avoid the long trip to Manchester to buy tickets in the box office, are falling pray to tickets countefellers..' DC arrived in Germany at the beginning of March 1973. He attended the Radio Luxembourg Golden Lion Award in Dortmund, played a concert in Hamburg, was in Paris ( for a tv show), played a concert in Antwerp (Belgium) , but the next two gigs in Germany  were cancelled because of poor ticket sales. DC : 'Not that I worried much about that with the screams ringing in my ears every night and my roadies having ...
