'David Cassidy Stopped Traffic..' Record Mirror Part 2
So I'm reading the Record Mirror's articles about David Cassidy and thinking how a huge star he was, and what happened to his fans. Those who followed him everywhere and were ready for great sacrifices to take a look at him..just for a moment. Where are they now? (The PETITION!)
RM, May 20, 1972 : 'David Cassidy stopped traffic to downtown Pittsburgh when he visited radio station KQV recently. Police had to block off the street to accomodate the two thousand fans who braved 10 degree cold and a foot of snow that had fallen the night before. The crowd started gathering in front of the station at 7.30 am for Cassidy's half-hour visit that afternoon'.
Yes, it was in February 1972 and we have that radio show with DC on the website. We can hear screaming fans, David answering questions but also all the time watching the crowd and so often we can hear him asking fans to push back and not hurt each other..It's amazing and scary..He was always afraid that something bad could have happened..
The same was in the UK. There is a very interesting article from January 1974, interviews with people who made The Pop Of The Pops, 'backroom boys and girls'. David was banned from the tv centre, it was impossible he took part in the program for the security reasons. So the situation wasn't easy for anybody, everything was to be filmed outside (and some of those tapes are lost)
The production assistant Ann Mann said that at first David was rather difficult. 'The first time he was on the show he seemed very aloof and unsure of himself. (..) The next time he was on, we filmed him on the river and he was still a bit like a spoilt kid. That was a little frightening doing that bit because all these girls were throwing themselves into the river and trying to swim on the boat. How none of them was drowned I will never know..
But the last time he was on (at Heathrow) he was just great and a real gentelman. You could tell that he'd finally come to terms with himself and he couldn't have been more courteous or amiable. He thought the whole bit about the suit disappearing was very funny and gave a great show even if he did have pins sticking into him' . David's suit had got lost and the one bought in a hurry was 'about five sizes too big'.
