Songs Turning 50 In 2025

Image
Not only David's because it's always good to have a perspective, and 1975 was an amazing year.  50 years ago music was the most exciting and important thing in my life, I was listening to the radio non stop, and enjoyed the music we were allowed to know. Not David's. Even that he was very popular in West Germany (not so far from Poland), and was voted the best, the most popular male vocalist by 'Bravo' readers in 1975, that meant nothing for our censors, DC was not for us, teens behind the Iron Curtain.  I had a very good friend at school, her mother worked in The Ministry of Foreign Trade, and from her business trips she brought Western records for her daughter. And once at school Monica (my friend) said,  'You must come to my flat after school. You wouldn't believe it what mum's brought'.  It was at the beginning of December 1975, I remember there was a lot of snow, and we must have been one of the first persons in Poland who heard 'Bohemian Rh...

44 weeks of 'Cherish'

Image
I got the old UK chart on Google alerts yesterday. From December 24, 1972. At the first glance, nothing important for us, DC fans, #1 single on that day was one of those tiring songs once you read the title you can't later get rid off it no matter how hard you try. The youngest Osmond's hit, this song was the number one hit for 5 weeks, at the end of 1972 and the beginning of 1973.. Yes, about the lover with long hair. From Liverpool. Let's watch #1s in the UK, in 1972. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TltT9mTW-SE What a year it was. T.Rex three #1s, and Harry Nilsson, Alice Cooper, Donny of course. David with 'How Can I Be Sure' for 2 weeks in October. Btw on that list from 24 December 1972, Donny had a song in Top 10, and The Osmonds too. David was included only on the album chart, 'Cherish' at #10.  And because it's Christmas and I have some free time, I've also watched a new video with every UK Top 10 songs of 1972. What fun, a lot of memorable hi...

Could It Be Forever. Remembering Wes Farrell

Image
Let's start with the great song Wes Farrell's co-written (with Danny Janssen) for David Cassidy. DC recorded it on his first solo album, and we have this wonderful video, 'Could It Be Forever' sung live on Estelar Del Sabado, in Spain, in March 1973. It's just my thought  of course, but the way he was singing this song, the lyrics not exactly how they should be, and the omission of 'but'..maybe because at that time he was not any longer on speaking terms with Wes Farrell, who knows.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuwVS2DqhzE If he had lived, on December 21 Wesley Donald Farrell would have celebrated his 85th birthday. He died 28 years ago, in February 1996, only 56 years old. Once someone so important, a musician, record producer and a songwriter. And he co-written some great hits, including this one, 'Hang On Sloopy', recorded for the first time by The McCoys in 1965 (Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100), and later by many famous artists. Really a...

A Promo David Cassidy's Single

Image
But first the song which has been a lot with me recently. And to think  there was a time I didn't like it. 'Santa Claus Is Coming To Town For Old and Tired' as I call it. DC recorded his Christmas EP in August 2016, it was released in November. Just 16 minutes of six Christmas classics, five the same he recorded for Partridge Family. In 1971.  David Cassidy was an extraordinary, one in a kind singer. And all his life he was working with the best musicians, who appreciated his talent. This EP is not an exception, There is such a wonderful, bluesy feeling about this song, dark humor. Yes Santa, we've been very good.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCq2fSFnwmY A few days ago I saw that someone is selling a promo DC's single. (it's still on ebay). Actually I felt rather excited about it, and sent the link to The DC Official Website, and some friends, even that it was only a promo recording. Not for selling, just the kind normally sent directly to broadcasters, in t...

Darlin' /Brian Wilson, Mike Love

Image
No, I haven't found that video. It must be somewhere because there are screen shots, and also a small fragment exists.  Maybe it was 'Darlin'', maybe not. Flo (Mark Volman) is on one of the pics. But that's all I know. What year it could be? DC looks so young. He had such hair in summer of 1974, in July when he was on 'Good Night America', and later in 1977 when the 'Police Story' production started. There are only 4 programs on the list of David's  tv guest appearances in 1977 (on the website). I'm certain there were more. We have quite a lot of articles from 1977 about his return to acting, and marriage with Kay Lenz, sure he was invited to many TV programs. But that's what we get now, and let's hope one day that video will appear on You Tube. Miracles happen, like it was in the case of  David's performance on Estelar de Sabado, from March 1973. I have thought this recording was lost forever and still feel so excited and gratefu...

Sing Me / Tony Romeo

Image
The song first and a very nice video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpi27BrpuFY&t=4s I thought about 'Sing Me' yesterday, when I read that fans, in very short time, had donated the amount required to place a historical marker at Colgate Field, in West Orange, New Jersey, in honor of David Cassidy's memory. Just wonderful idea, and big thanks and congratulations for every person involved in it. Barb Schlamp Collentine, Karen Ranieri, Gina Gelardo, Erin Sullivan, Margie Jackson and Anette Trotta Flynn and Eilene Shimi and Robyn Smith and other wonderful our DC sisters.  There were discussions in the past if David would have wanted himself those plaques, benches, stars..Somehow I'm 100 % sure that if he had known about this tribute, in this place, in a town he lived as a young boy, he would have been very happy. 'Oh, my days come back to me..back to me..' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_XDYPfJAmc So I listened to 'Sing Me' yesterday, and of course t...

The Year Of The Daydreamer

Image
It's impossible not to think about the end of the year, and I'm again surprised that not many days left to another Christmas. And so many things to do. My calendar for the next year has already started to fill up. But who knows what the future brings. Anyway one thing is certain, 2023 will be The Year Of The Daydreamer' (at least for me) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EANv9_fwmmU Syon Park. I was there too, like David, only 45 years later, in August 2018. An amazing experience, in that deserted park nothing, absolutely nothing has changed since 1973. We were standing in silence, the five of us, like we were waiting for David to appear and start walking like in this video. We felt his presence. Of course it's easy to explain, at the time we were still so sad because of his passing, talked about him a lot..Yes, I know, but I always feel his presence when I'm in London.. As we know DC wasn't very impressed by that song, even that he knew it would be a great hit. I...

'Tomorrow' and 'Here Comes The Sun'

Image
David and The Beatles again. This time because of George Harrison. We all know about the DC's friendship with John Lennon, and he also knew Paul McCartney quite well.  In 1975 David was one of the guests invited on board the famous cruise liner, the Queen Mary, at Long Beach in California. Celebration party for the recording end of the Paul McCartney and Wings highly anticipated album, 'Venus and Mars'. After the great success of their previous album, 'Band On The Run', fans and music critics all over the world were waiting for it. Even in communist Poland. I remember when I heard 'Venus and Mars' for the first time on Polish Radio. Maybe I even read about that party, but of course had no idea DC was there.  The party took place on March 24, 1975, and thanks to Henry Diltz we have one pic from it with David, in conversation with his friends from 'America', Dan Peek and Dewey Bunnell . There were about 200 guests, amazing names. George Harrison, Bob D...

David Cassidy Japan Tour. Chapter 7

Image
The time after an important event is always difficult. The 5th anniversary of the day David Cassidy died was 3 days ago. Some fans (including me)  met in London,  it was great to be together just for a few hours, talking and remembering DC.  Our pics from November21st have been published, some the DC's friends have shared their memories  with us.. Time to return to reality, to the world without DC and to our daily task to keep that flame burning. Keeping his legacy alive. It's not easy, the new videos or articles don't appear every day even that we search Internet non stop looking for sth new. Thanks to Lord Montagu and Sharron Liddle we have a new tribute to David, an information board near the location of the riverbank where David went fishing with the current Lord's mum in 1973. And a new chapter from DC Japan Tour 1974 appeared 3 days ago. Maybe a song first. It has been cloudy today, the first snow this year which hasn't improved my mood..Ain't No Sunshine....

Frozen Noses / David Cassidy

Image
It's not December yet, but today is very cold, there is  snow in the south of Poland, it will be very soon in Warsaw. So it's time for that wonderful, magical, amazing song wrote by 24 year old David Cassidy. All by himself, music and lyrics, and sang by him with such tenderness.. Like always with the DC's own songs, not very long, but he didn't need many words to 'paint a picture' of young love..This song is truly extraordinary, the side B of the single released in 1974. Side A, 'If I Didn't Care'. The teen idol's farewell gift. 'Her love burns inside his Heart..Lights his eyes when they're apart..' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWkgbGip3s4 Yes, there was magic in his voice, it's such a shame that he didn't record more. But it's life, and besides David Cassidy first of all wanted to be an actor, at least he said so in many articles I've read..Of course he was a very good actor, and I love him on Bonanza, Ironside, F...

'Just Close Your Eyes And Let Me Run Away..'

Image
I wish I could have seen the Wes Farrell's face when he'd listened to the demo of this song for the first time. And what he was thinking. About the boy who looked like million dollars, had a fabulous voice and could write such a song, just like that. Not an ordinary teen idol, no. What a shame, the demo no longer exists.  DC: 'I wrote it in about 5 minutes the day before I was about to go on a tour (..) The song just fell out of me. As soon as I wrote it, I decided I was going to record it. I held on to it. (..) I got a few musicians together, went in this little studio and played the guitar and sang the demo.' (David Cassidy : Could It Be Forever?, 2007) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfkF3QUZhjo Such a strong ballad, absolutely not worse than any other track on that great album, 'Cherish'. And the lyrics..still so moving, now even more. And I thought about 'Ricky's Tune' yesterday. October 21st, just one month left, and it will be 5 years. That...

Preyin' On My Mind / David Cassidy, Kim Carnes & Dave Ellingson

Image
October, the month we write a lot about the David Cassidy's album, 'Dreams Are Nuthin' More Than Wishes'. The first truly his own. David Cassidy : 'It's a piece of me - my whole life is in that album, and all the dreams I've ever had, if people don't like it they don't like me.' A lot of people fell for DC, became long life fans, after listening to that record, I've read such statements many times.. Released in October 1973, 49 years ago, the most successful DC's album in the UK. The single from it, 'Daydreamer/Puppy Song became nr 1 on October 21st  (for 3 weeks). I've checked the Official Charts, so on that day it looked like that : 1. David Cassidy, 'Daydreamer/Puppy Song, 2. Simon Park Orchestra, 'Eye Level', 3. Slade, 'My Friend Stan', 4. David Bowie, 'Sorrow', 5. Status Quo, 'Caroline', 6. Elton John, 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road'... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0mrYzW6iRM But I ...

Some Kind Of a Summer / Dave Ellingson

Image
I've been checking news from Florida a lot, I have not only some FB friends who live there, but also someone I know personally. My best friend Lucy's (we met at school) older daughter lives in Florida. She has 3 young kids, a husband, a very big dog and a very old cat. They've stayed at their house, everything is ok, it wasn't so bad where they live. They are lucky. But it's not the end.. So I've spent some time with the map of the USA, (I always loved geography and I collect guides (books) and maps) and it made me think about my big adventure, my trip to America in 2019. I owe it only to David Cassidy. So the song, everything started with it.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IasELb7iHo Just wonderful, DC's singing and of course the music and the lyrics. Dave Ellingson : 'I got the idea for the song "Some Kind Of Summer' while Kim and I were driving back to Los Angeles from San Francisco in the summer. It was a road song. David did a great job ...

All I Wanna Do Is Touch You / Irwin Levine, L. Russell Brown

Image
Irwin Levine (1938-1997) and L. Russell Brown (born in 1940), who wrote also for TPF, 'Am I Losing You' and of course 'I Woke Up In Love This Morning'.  'All I Wanna Do Is Touch You' was released as the  B-side of 'Cherish', in September 1971. The single hit no 9 on US charts on November 13, 1971, and stayed on the charts for 11 weeks. It was David's only US Top 10 hit.. This is my one of the best 'sing along with David' song, it's so unpretentious, always makes me smile. Someone has written (in comment) - 'I blush everytime I hear the song'..I don't know what she's been thinking about, but I always think about the time when I was a teen and life was simple and..exciting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pG17uX7M8U But I've thought about this song today while seeing another pic posted on our DC Great Britain Legacy Group. Another pic with David and a fan, or two fans. Or more. Fans hugging David, all smiling. And these...

If I Didn't Care / Jack Lawrence

Image
I wrote the last entry 2 days ago, very short one about Olivia Newton-John's passing..And I thought that my next one would be called - '1000'. 1k signatures signed for David Cassidy, Music Walk Of Fame Artist Stone Honour. But we still don't have that number and who knows how long it will take to achieve that very modest goal. I've written about it several times, nothing more to say really.  We cherish each person who has signed and especially those who's found time to write something. Why David deserves that recognition. We know why..Especially the UK's fans should  know and remember https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiM62mj5j-g 'If I Didn't Care', David's #9 hit in the UK, in May 1974. An extraordinary DC's cover of that very successful song. The Ink Spots recording from 1939 became the 10th best selling single of all time with over 19 million copies sold. Can you believe it? I got to know this song thanks to David. Let's listen to Th...

Where Is The Morning / Adam Miller

Image
I've written about Adam Miller a few times, my true idee fixe. Yesterday I spent some hours in my car and of course David's music was playing. Also 'Cherish' album. There are 11 songs on it, 3 of them wrote by Adam Miller, and I still know nothing about him. A person who publishes his music on YT calls him 'mysterious'. Let's listen first to David Cassidy singing one of Adam's songs from 'Cherish',  'Where Is The Morning'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQ2U5PFYw8g Of course I know a little bit, how he looked like, that he played  guitar, collaborated with John Cale (Velvet Underground) and with the Velvet's vocalist and Andy Warhol's muse,  German singer Nico. Both Adam Miller albums (1972, 1974) were produced by Wes Farrell, released on the Wes's own label, Chelsea Records. Terry Cashman and Tommy West also produced some of his songs and even did backing vocals on them. On his first record played : Max Bennett, Larry Carlto...

The Summer of 1978..

Image
Old habits die hard, and since December 2020 I've been writing about David Cassidy..a lot. Nearly every evening, regardless what happens in my life. Sometimes I'm tired, or have daubts if an entry is interesting enough, but I just love writing about him and his music. And while doing it thinking about the past.  So I've read recently an interview Ken Mansfield gave our webmaster, Jane, about his memories from the summer of 1978, when he was working with David Cassidy, producing his fabulous album which was released much later. And I have a lot of memories from the summer of 1978. Maybe it's a reason I love so much those songs recorded by DC 44 years ago  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmREZ3w_hjE Ken Mansfield, the former U.S. manager of Apple Records, a high-ranking executive for several record labels, a songwriter, a Grammy winning album producer. He worked with the greatest, also with DC. He wrote some very popular books, one of them, published in 2007 is called ...

"It wasn't supposed to end this way..'

Image
Kim Carnes' words after David Cassidy died. And : 'David had the best laugh, the best smile and the biggest heart' . She has birthday today, this wonderful, beautiful woman. A girl from California, born in 1945, a singer and a songwriter. I first heard about Kim in the 80s when she had an enormous world success with 'Betty Davis Eyes'. It was even a hit in Poland, in 1981 we had strike after strike, we fought with communist regime, and there were only empty shelves in our shops, but I remember the song was played on our radio. It was so different, dark and mysterious, a great tune and that amazing voice. I later saw how she looked ..That wonderful, blond hair, a woman with class. I always wanted to look like that.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPOIS5taqA8 She was really successful and even took part in one of the most famous recordings in the history of pop music. 'We Are The World' was recorded in January 1985 and Kim was there too, along some of the mos...

My Number 1

Image
No, not my fav the DC's song. It's just not possible, I love 98% of  everything he ever recorded. I can only say what song is my number 1 today. And today is 'Breaking Down Again'. Such a wonderful song, and in 1976 everybody had great expectations..David and the RCA's guys. From David's liner notes (btw we are so lucky that he took time to write them) DC : '..I was sittin' at the keys and working on that idea and Bill (House) strolled up real casual like, as is his style and we just wrote it. Where I got a void - he'd fill right in. The easiest song I ever wrote. Bill was originally going to sing one of the harmonies, but neither of us could cut the high past like Gloria could, bless her soul, and I do mean soul.(..)..it's just easy singin' with your friends - especially if they're cute. Shake it darlin'.' It's so moving, the song and those words young David Cassidy, so full of hope,  wrote for us so many years ago. Gloria..s...

'..My Fans Go For My Music..'

Image
It's just a fragment taken out of context, from the interview published in November 1972, Hit Parader Magazine. DC was asked if he didn't care being compared to eg Jane Fonda. Did he object?. David answered that it was silly, and that he was compared to many people, men and women, and that he had given up caring. 'The whole day is filled with so many silly things and I can't let these little things get to me. If I did, then I'd have gone out of my mind long ago..' Maybe a song, something carefree and happy. The last days were difficult, fighting for The London Music Walk Of Fame Artist Stone Honour for David Cassidy, and an unpleasant exchange of opinions that destroyed the peace in our small world of David's fans.. 'All I Wanna Do Is Touch You'. Written by Irwin Levine  and L. Russell Brown. The B side of the single 'Cherish', released in September 1971. Irvin Levine (he died in 1997) and L.Russel Brown. They wrote together one song I really...
