Songs Turning 50 In 2025

Not only David's because it's always good to have a perspective, and 1975 was an amazing year.

50 years ago music was the most exciting and important thing in my life, I was listening to the radio non stop, and enjoyed the music we were allowed to know. Not David's. Even that he was very popular in West Germany (not so far from Poland), and was voted the best, the most popular male vocalist by 'Bravo' readers in 1975, that meant nothing for our censors, DC was not for us, teens behind the Iron Curtain.

I had a very good friend at school, her mother worked in The Ministry of Foreign Trade, and from her business trips she brought Western records for her daughter. And once at school Monica (my friend) said,  'You must come to my flat after school. You wouldn't believe it what mum's brought'.

It was at the beginning of December 1975, I remember there was a lot of snow, and we must have been one of the first persons in Poland who heard 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. Her mum bought her brand new 'Night At The Opera'. BR was released as a single at the end of October, but at the time it wasn't played on our radio yet. A powerful experience for a 13 year old. But I even more loved another album that precious mother brought from the West, and especially that song. I didn't understand a word, but I was listening to it with tears in my eyes.

Yes 1975 was a year to remember, and DC and his great concept album, 'The Higher They Climb, The Harder They Fall' was just one of many wonderful albums recorded that year. So many memorable songs, and this list is from my memory, believe me - 'Love Will Keep Us Together', 'Rhinestone Cowboy', 'Fame', 'Jive Talkin'', 'Sister Golden Hair', 'I'm Not In Love', 'Baby I Love Your Way', 'Wish You Were Here', 'Sailing', 'One of Those Nights'. Evil Woman', 'All By Myself'. A lot of popular hits by Bay City Rollers, Smokie, ABBA to name a few.

David Cassidy, even without touring, and with a  different, not teen idol's image, topped 'Bravo' album chart in September 1975 with 'The Higher They Climb', earlier in August this album peaked at #22 in the UK. the single 'I Write The Songs/ Get It Up For Love' was #11 there, for 8 weeks.

In September 1975 'Get It Up For Love' was number 1 on the Bravo chart..

'The Higher They Climb, The Harder They Fall' got mostly very good reviews. DC was praised for his vocals, courage and determination. But the album didn't take off in the US and that's why after 50 years we can't find it on any list of the best albums of 1975.

And one more thing, and it's really a bitter pill to swallow, for us, David's fans. 'I Write The Songs'. It should have been remembered as one of the best songs of 1975. By David Cassidy.

Someone wrote a comment 2 years ago, 'Boy, did smashed it like it was his own.' Exactly.
