1972. Concerts. Part 1. Madison Square Garden.

1972..Half a century ago, an amazing year for David Cassidy, with some incredible highes and a lot of work and stress. A strange year, he broke the attendance record at the Steel Pier, he played Madison Square Garden concert, but his Hollywood Bowl gig was cancelled because of the poor ticket sales. And sometimes he performed in half- filled concert halls. It was obvious that David's career in his native country had slowed down..

I just don't know where to start and how. If I were to write a serious book about David Cassidy the chapter called let's say '1972 - Didn't We Have Ourselves Kind Of A Summer', would be very, very long. Some outstanding, memorable concerts, but not all of them as successful as we used to think.

2 TPF's albums, 2 DC's solo records, more popular in the UK than in America, 23 The Partridge Family's episodes were aired that year, The Bob Hope Special.., The Naked Lunch Box. In 1972 DC was twice in in the UK, and also in Holland ..

I want to write about DC's concerts, but let's first watch David with the legendary  Bob Hope, who invited DC to his tv show. It was aired in October 1972. David was just wonderful,  And I don't mean only the way he looked. It's  like watching two different personalities, a very handsome, smiling young man who was talking and joking with Bob Hope and sang with him 'May The Bird Of Paradise Fly Up Your Snoot', and that other one, the epitome of a rock star singing 'Rock Me Baby'..

In 1972, DC played 61 concerts, all over the country, everywhere really, also once in Canada. He started just after returning from that promotional visit to London, on February 19th he played in Civic Arena in Pittsburg, the next day in Philadelphia. He performed for the last time that year on October 7, in Tulsa. He played the next concert in his native country..nearly 18 years later, in March 1990..

Of course the most famous one is his Madison Square Garden concert, played on March 11th.  On the website there is a set list, some photographs and an audio of the whole concert recorded by Betty Ernst on a cassette tape.

Ralf Graves wrote for 'Life' magazine : '...at last HE bounced on stage, clad in white and gold, like sir Galahad, but with few differences (..) The vocal response of 20 000 idolators is somewhat harder to describe (..) the young girls of America have absolutely perfected the high-C- shriek. My middle aged eardrums were in shock after the first five minutes..'

Amazing..I've watched it many, many times in wonder, and always feel that excitement..Here is the link to the 'Editor's Note' from Life magazine, March 1972.
