It's rather complicated, but to be brief, Henry Diltz will get a Grammy Award in February.
At the Recording Academy's Special Merit Award Ceremony which will take place during Grammy Week, on February 5, Lifetime Achievement Award will get (among others), Bobby McFerrin, Nirvana, The Supremes, Ma Rainey, Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson of Heart.
Henry Diltz will get The Trustees Award, a Grammy for people who 'during their career in music, have made significant contributions, other than performance, to the field of recording.' In the announcement we can read about more than 250 album covers photographed by Henry (including that legendary Doors' album cover), and that Henry Diltz was the official photographer at the Woodstock Festival, in August 1969. There is also a list of 'musical legends' photographed by Henry and such a list with the names was presented :
'The Eagles, Neil Young, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Jackson Browne, America, Steppenwolf, James Taylor, Jimi Hendrix, The Monkees, Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt and David Cassidy'. Of course Henry photographed everybody, the most famous in the 60s, 70s and 80s, but only those names are on the list.
Reading that announcement in the morning today, has made me happy and sad at the same time. Happy because Henry Diltz is someone special for us, the David Cassidy fans, and I'm happy he will get his Grammy. It will be air live on CBC, it will be really something, and I can imagine this standing ovation for him. He deserved this award.
For us he is first of all a life-long David Cassidy's friend. They met on the set of The Partridge Family, Henry was to take some pics for Tiger Beat. They became friends right away. Henry Diltz, who is also a talented musician performed with DC on stage during his World Tour in 1974. And took a lot of pics. We can see him in this video..

When David died, Henry Diltz didn't write much.
'Goodbye for now ole pal. See you on the other side.'
Hi Weronika, thank you for sharing this! I am so happy that Henry Diltz is getting a Grammy Award! He really deserves it! Besides photographing all of the people you mentioned above, he also took lots and lots of pictures of David! He also went on tour with David all over the world! I believe that a lot of the pictures of David that we saw in magazines in the 70's were taken by Henry.
ReplyDeleteBesides the great professional photographer that Henry is, I was surprised to learn that he is also a musician. This was the first time I have heard and saw him sing. Thank you for sharing this video too! Congratulations, Henry!
ReplyDeleteOh yes, he was a musician first and actually quite known. He was a co-founder of the Modern Folk Quarter in the 60s, and he later played at the Monkees' recording sessions. Henry Diltz played with everybody and photographed everybody, DC was someone special for him
