Home Is Where The Heart Is

The second RCA David Cassidy's album released in March 1976, produced again by David and Bruce Johnston. This time Gerry Beckley took a more active role, co-wrote two songs with David. And Bill House, a talented  session musician , composer and singer,  co-wrote with David even more, four, among them this one (in this video David performed with Steve Ross) :

I've tried to find more about Bill House, he released one album on RCA in 1974, on which he sang 10 own compositions, also..'You're No Better Than A Common Thief', David made a cover of that song on 'The Higher They Climb , The Harder They Fall'. They became friends for a while, but they never worked together again.. Bill House :'David and I were spending a lot of time together then. When I first met David, it was almost like we'd known each other for a long time.. (..) For that album David and I got on a plane to Hawaii(..) We wrote them (songs) all that day. There was such good compatibility between us that we'd write line after line. We were tuned into each other as writers' (David Cassidy :Could It Be Forever, 2007). This is my favourite song wrote by David and Bill :

That album was critically very well received, there were a lot of great reviews. Paul McCartney said about the cover of his song 'Tomorrow' ,that David : ' took the song to it's ultimate potential'. Ray Fox-Cumming from Record Mirror :' The whole album abounds with confidence and David's singing in particular has improved immeasurably since his last album.Ever since David resigned from being king of the teenies he's been looking for respect for his music. In my book, he got it' (March 29th 1976, Record Mirror) Ray Fox-Cumming, a known music critic who didn't like David's  concerts in London, in 1973. In 1976 he changed his mind and appreciated  David's artistic development. He prefered his version of 'January' to Pilot's..Me too..

Original album included fabulous recording session photos (by great Henry Diltz) which captured that great atmosphere which was in the recording studio , and handwriting liner notes made by David himself, very difficult to read..Fortunately, my friend Doreen made a transcript of them. We are so grateful, I tried to read them many times and I couldn't.. .http://www.davidcassidy.com/fansite/DiscographyPages/HomeIsWhereTheHeartIs_LinerNotes.html

So it was a very good pop album, with some potential hits , one of the best in David's catalog , still great to listen to ,but it didn't chart in any country, even in the UK. Would a concert tour change anything? I don't know..But David didn't want to go on tour..and the tirdness, burnout and disappointment due to the poor reception of his music and hard partying began to show on him. He was drinking too much, became chain-smoker..drugs..he was painfully slim..Jack Cassidy cut off contact with him after refusing a loan...David's manager Ruth Aarons, became addicted to medication..Even Sam Hyman, the most loyal friend,  left him. He couldnt watch David killing himself...But he hadn't given up yet..Still there was one more album to make..
