Could It Be Forever/Wes Farrell, Danny Janssen/

The first David's single which was much more popular in the UK(#2 in April 1972) than in the US

I can imagine Wes Farrell watching The Partridge Family's pilot for the first time..Bingo! and when he met  David and heard how this beautiful boy could sing..the most expensive champange must have been ordered. Wes : 'Larry Uttal showed me a pilot and the rest is history. You had a young guy named David Cassidy who had star image written all over him (..)Everything was written with him in mind. David was a one-hundred-percenter. He never backed away from his commitment one iota'. (DC;Could It Be Forever, 2017)

Wes was the boss, 31 in 1970, a very known(and successful) music producer and songwriter, and  unknown 20 year old boy with no recording experience at all. David was so naive, at the beginning he had no idea that Wes 'owned' him, because Farrell had the rights to produce also his solo records. If we add to this that Wes was very bossy, even rude, and David was shy and polite..Like many, Wes underestimated him.

At first David was  overwhelmed by his stardom and just happy that he could be a recording artist, even if the songs weren't the kind he liked..But the first crisis came very quickly..I've been surprised myself when I've found exactly when it was..November 12th  1970 , yes! 'Doesn't Somebody Want To Be Wanted' was recorded on that day..the first time when David said 'no'. 'I hated the idea that they wanted me to talk in the middle of the song. I said 'This is crass commercialism. It isn't me.' Wes freaked out 'You can't do this!' he shouted(..) I had no say in what I was to perform ; I was just supposed to follow orders. Id never been good in following orders'. At the end David gave up but it was the beginning  of the fight for independence. He started writing songs..but it was Wes who decided whether any song would be recorded..and about the final shape of it. Here is  their best song.

It's just an amazing song, I'd love to know who really wrote this. Wes Farrell produced all TPF's albums and  co-wrote a lot of songs, he was the father of their success. He was very influential, the best songwriters, the best session musicians worked for him, he knew how to make a hit, what would sell and with such a charismatic singer like David..for a few years Wes was the most important guy in that business, earned a lot of money,  married Frank Sinatra's daugther..But  the music changed around 1973 and Wes couldn't . After the end of The Partridge Family, he discovered that no one needed him any more..Tina Sinatra divorced him, he was broke and left Los Angeles..I'm glad that after many years , David appreciated his work and forgot about their difficult relationship..and Wes was present at one of David's concert in the 90's.

Wes Farrell died in 1996, only 56 years old.. Here is one of the songs he co-wrote for David..Keith Partridge..
