Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame

This is something fans talk about from time to time. What  to do to get David Cassidy inducted into The RRHOF. There have been petitions etc. even that the committee doesn't have a good opinion (for many reasons). The Mamas And Papas for example was inducted earlier than Deep Purple.

Of course despite its name the Hall honors artists of all genres. Bee Gees, Madonna, Blondie , ABBA , The Cars, Heart, and Hall & Oates are also inducted. And there is a list of those who were nominated but haven't been selected so far. Kate Bush, Iron Maiden, Los Lobos. Of course it's no use writing to them that DC recorded rock music. They know about it. Not only  Jann Wenner..

There were some artists. who didn't want to be inducted, Sex Pistols for example. I like what Michael Nesmith once said :' I can see that HOF (Hall Of Fame) is a private enterprise (..) The inductees appear to be chosen at the owner's pleasure.'. Yes. Let's listen to The Monkees. This song was written by Michael Nesmith, who died some days ago.

Amazing song  and Micky Dolenz vocals..Chapeau bas!

So I've never thought it's worth it. Writing to them. But there was a night during my last holiday when I couldn't sleep. I went outside for a moment, the Moon was shining, I could see and hear the sea..I returned to my room and wrote this.

' To The Rock&Roll Hall Of Fame,

There are a lot of unknown musicians all over the world. Very talented, but who never recorded a hit album and the audience  never heard about them. Because achieving a global recognition needs not only a talent. but also a support from an influential record label and a lot of publicity. And a lot of luck of course. Those artists and their music are lost for us forever.

And there are other musicians, equally talented, who achieved great success, had hit records, but for many, not artistic reasons, they are thought to be not worthy to be remembered. To be inducted into RRHOF. Because their image, their early fame, sometimes unwanted, stopped regarded them as independent, serious artists. Teen Idols. Pretty boys who did what they were told. Singing unimportant love songs, bubblegum music for little girls. That's what I heard from a very known Polish music critic when I'd sent him a link to the last David Cassidy's album, that oustanding EP, 'Songs My Father Taught Me'. He even didn't listen to it. He sent me an email, 'David Cassidy was a singer for little girls' . I could felt his contempt. The worst kind of attitude a music critic could have, be prejudiced and deaf to real art, real music.

Because it's enough  just listen to any of David Cassidy's solo albums, his own, or recorded with the best Los Angeles studio musicians, who made The Partridge Family music, to know that he was an outstanding, original performer. During his long career he sang a lot of covers, but he was a great interpreter, he interpreted each of those songs through his own experiences, he made those  songs his own. I think this is something only the greatest could do.

I can write a lot about the music David Cassidy recorded during his career, jazz, blues, rock, soul, pop. He also achieved a great success on Broadway and in Las Vegas. He sold millions of records. But I think that David Cassidy should be inducted to RRHOF because, for a few years, in the early 70s, his voice, his music, and yes! his image, brought joy, happiness and consolation to millions of his fans all over the world. His was the voice of young love, the voice of a whole generation of teens and pre teens. Those songs who were called with contempt, 'bubble gum music', they articulated those feelings so important for millions of his young fans. He was for us, always, our own idol, and I'm proud still being his fan.'
