Can't Go Home Again /David Cassidy, Kim Carnes, Dave Ellingson/

It was one moment during that crazy Sydney's concert  on a hot day in March (1974 World Tour) , when David  Cassidy took his guitar and wanted his audience to stop screaming and listen to him for a change..And he started singing 'Can't Go Home Again' , and talking with his fans..A great song and what a performance..

The song was released on 'Dreams Are Nuthin' More Than Wishes' album in October 1973. At the time I had no idea about it and I never heard about Kim Carnes till 1981 when she had a massive world hit with 'Bette Davis Eyes', number 1 on the Billboard chart for 9 weeks, she got a Grammy Award for it.

I loved the song and Kim's raspy voice and that video (amazing but it was often on our tv), I thought she looked so elegant and so different, so beautiful woman with such amazing blond hair.. It was many years later that I learned more about Kim, her husband Dave Ellingson and their friendship with a teen idol, David Cassidy.

They were older than David, Kim was born in 1945, Dave in 1942, they got married in 1967 ,and their marriage is still going strong. They started in the 60s as songwriters and session background singers. In 1971 they got a  proposition, just out of the blue  .Dave Ellingson: 'We got a call from Richard Delvy, who said :'Hey, do you wanna do this tour? He told us we had to stretch the show and asked if Kim and I could open. We never had a situation where you walk out and the entire sports arena yells in unison 'WE WANT DAVID!!' Kim and I just kind of looked at each other and went, 'Oh, this is gonna be fun''(David Cassidy:'Could It Be Forever', 2007)

They toured with David since that first memorable concert in Seattle in 1971, they even wrote their own column in Partridge Family Magazine, but what was the most important ,they became very close friends.Kim Carnes :'Our house became a safe place for him.We'd get  out a bottle of wine and smoke a joint and put on this collection of really crazy, bad records, and laugh just as hard every time about them (..) It was just the three of us. We would go well into the night, and many nights he ended up sleeping on our couch (..) He could be just David, and say anything he wanted,and just be real (..) David had a wonderful sense of humor. They wrote and recorded some beautiful songs together , the three of them - 'Can't Go Home Again' and 'Preyin' On My Mind', David wrote with Kim 'Song For a Rainy Day' , with Dave 'Fix Of Your Love'. He also recorded Dave's song ' Some Kind Of  A Summer'.

Kim :' And now that it has ended the wrong way , in a way it was never supposed to end, I can't get it (Can't Go Home Again) out of my head..Little did we know that we were kind writing about David's life, too, when we were writing that song..'

Don't get me wrong, I'm not writing today's blog just to gossip about DC's private life, it's because I always admired that amazing woman, Kay Ann Lenz. She had birthday yesterday. 3 years younger than David, a few years older than a typical DC's fan.  In the 70s I heard quite a lot about Kay Lenz . She was very popular in Poland, like the rest of the cast of 'Rich Man, Poor Man'. That tv series was shown in my country I think in 1978, and everybody watched it, also a lot was written about the cast. So one day I read that Kay's husband was a former teen idol, David Cassidy. They Said I Changed A Lot..

Let's first listen to something which was not released, why they didn't want David singing that song is a great mystery for me. Listening to his young, sincere, innocent and magical voice is one in a kind moving experience. 'I Just Hated Being In The Show..'

Last week someone posted a screenshot of the article from May 1974, unfortunately without the date or the name of the paper. Written by a popular journalist Roderick Gilchrist, I think it was Daily Express. We can read that this interview took place at London Weekend Television's Building, on the day before the DC's last concert in Manchester.  And David said, "I feel like the door to the cage has just been opened. And, any minute now I'm going to be able to fly right away from my prison.
