Blood Brothers (Willy Russell ) Part 3 Tell Me It's Not True

David Cassidy debuted  in Blood Brothers on Broadway on..and that is the question..On Today Show he said they were to open on June 9th 1993, on every Broadway pages I've checked the date was June 16th, and in one article (New York Times ) the date was August 16th...I'm really confused and we can't count on DC himself..he wasn't good with dates..I've  heard for example when he said..'when I finished The World Tour in 1975..' What a shame he didn't have someone like me by his side, I'm very good with names and dates..So ..let's say..in summer of 1993 , one day , DC played Mickey for the very first time..

First serious reviews appeared in September 1993 . New York Newsday : 'By rights, Willy Russell's Blood Brothers shouldn't work. It's a contemporary prince and pauper musical tragedy set in Liverpool. It overruns by a quarter , boast two songs of any worth, no dancing, grown actors playing children..(..) It also wipes me away without fail, every time.(..) David is a gusty revelation as the poor but plucky Mickey, navigating the path from exuberant youth to depressed adulthood with a depth of feeling we never knew he had in him. The price of David Cassidy's hard earned  maturity is that it makes us feel oh-so old.'

This is a link to an amazing interview , DC and Michael J. Baker Jr in talk about David's past and playing Mickey , we can watch, as one fan wrote in comment ' real David Cassidy' , someone very mature and serious,  sophisticated and eloquent, with depth and his strong own opinions . I love this interview..

David performed on Broadway till June 1994, next season toured  with it in the U.S. and Canada (with Petula, but without Shaun), and in season  1995/1996 in the UK, in London at The Phoenix Theatre.

He played Mickey about 800 times, it gave him a lot of satisfaction, and  he also earned a lot of money, but the role  was very demanding . At the very beginning  for example, during the rehearsals in summer 1993, he tore both his hamstrings and  was taking Advil every day. He didn't want anybody to know that he was suffering. He also had terrible back and neck aches.

Patrick Cassidy : I went to New York to see Blood Brothers and I was completely knocked out by David and Shaun. This was an example of David's talent as an actor and singer. There wasn't a horde of screaming girls, so you could hear music and dialogue, you could see him doing what he does best. I think if my father had seen David in it he would have been so proud of him..'(D.Cassidy :Could It Be Forever?, 2007)
