Keith Partridge And David Cassidy

Of course we always knew that. There were two men - one was a naive teenager, a superstar,  a good boy who went to school and spent evenings with his mum and his younger siblings. Didn't smoke, drink and at drive- in movies watched films. Very, very pretty, but not very smart.

His name was Keith Partridge, we knew what we could expect from him, beautiful and little boring boy next door. And there was that other one..sophisticated, soft spoken, shy but at the same time very sure of himself, gentle and nice but also soo sexy, what he was doing at night..? He was like from another planet. A teen idol. His name was David Cassidy.
My friend Jane summed it up best. She was at DC's concert in Manchester in 1973..She was 15 and went with her best girl friend. They expected Keith Partridge, but instead they got someone else..David Cassidy. sexy and  exciting, who moved on the stage in a way..Jane never saw anything like that before. She was a very polite girl, but she started jumping and screaming like every single girl in audience  And what more David  Cassidy didn't sound like Keith Partridge. It wasn't a teenager who was singing that night.

I really can understand Wes Farrell. As he said : ' you had a young guy named David Cassidy who had star image written all over him' (David Cassidy : Could It Be Forever?, 2007). A beautiful boy who could sing. Bingo !  Of course he could look young and innocent (he was an actor after all) but  his voice was, it wasn't a teenager's voice.

Young David Cassidy's voice was warm and soft, breathy and  seductive, and if necessary strong and commanding, a grown up man's voice. It was just amazing that this slim built, not tall and soft spoken pretty boy had such a voice. So Wes Farrell had no choice, he changed David's voice a little bit. so as Keith P. he sounded younger and lighter. It was something very often done by many music producers. And of course still is the same..This is a show business not a charity. So on the first two TPF's records, David's voice was altered.

And now ( at last ! ) someone altered those tracks other way round, to better reflect David's true voice. John Gomolka has given us back real David ( so to speak)..As one fan has written  : 'the difference is subtle but distinct at the same time' (Lynn Marksberry). I second that. Not everybody is impressed. There are some fans' comments that they love more Keith's singing. But I love those alternative versions. The sound is so fresh and clear , it's so emotional to hear the DC's true voice...it's like being with David at the recording studio. Thank you so much John Gomolka..
