I Heard You Singing Your Song / Barry Mann

First the song, wrote by Barry Mann, from TPF's last album 'Bulletin Board' (Bell, 1973)

It's one of those TPF's songs which only looks very simple. And makes you smile and happy and it's great to sing along. A real gem. Wonderfully sung. But.. first of all not so easy to sing  and  the lyrics are not so happy. As if it were specially written for David. Maybe. Who knows? Not giving and only taking and being afraid of a serious commitment. It's started from that moment when Jack Cassidy told his very young son about the divorce. My grandson who is very sensitive is nearly the same age now...

DC : 'Whatever problems I have today with trusting people, whatever problems I have with dealing with rejection, with loss - and I'm super hypersensitive about abandonment, about needing people around me to be consistent and loving - have their origins in that moment'. (David Cassidy : Could It Be Forever?, 2007)

Barry Mann's wife, Cynthia Weil also wrote a song for David, for the same album, TPF's 'Bulletin Board'

Old wounds and pain..I wonder what DC had thought about those songs.

Barry Mann (born 1939) and Cynthia Weil (b.1940) , amazing duo, they married in 1961 and still going strong as a couple after 60 years.  Together they wrote hundreds of songs and in 1987 were inducted into  the Songwriters Hall of Fame. With Phil Spector they wrote very popular 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling',  and together a lot of great hits also known by DC's fans. Like 'Looking Through The Eyes Of Love', it was a TPF's hit cover version, let's for a change listen to the artist who first recorded that song

'Walking In the Rain' wrote by Barry, Cynthia and  Phil Spector in the 60s was another big hit for TPF. One cover wasn't  very good, a pop version of the iconic The Animals' hit, 'We Gotta Get Out Of This Place'. That song has an amazing story, it was written  by Barry Mann with someone's else in mind, later Barry himself was to record it ( he is also a talented singer and pianist) but in the end the song became  great  Animals' hit. David did what he could, but the backing vocals and the way TPF's version was arranged..It was a very strange choice of a song  for TPF to cover.

And last but not least Barry and Cynthia wrote two very early TPF's hits performed by Love Generation and The Ron Hicklin Singers. Recorded when no one knew that this beautiful boy, David Cassidy could sing even better than those hired  very good professionals. The rest is history...
