Go Now / Larry Banks, Milton Bennett
Strange, but this is the first time I'm writing about that song. And David Cassidy's version is outstanding. so powerful and personal, full of passion and despair. From his second solo album 'Rock Me Baby'. I love this video.

'Rock Me Baby'..great album, became nr 2 in the UK and brought some great hits, 'How Can I Be Sure' of course, and 'Rock Me Baby' and 'Some Kind of a Summer'. 'Go Now' should have been a great hit too. It's really impossible to say which of DC's Bell records is my favourite. All four of them are great.
Richard Philips-Jones : 'His second album of 1972 'Rock Me Baby ' perhaps indicated more clearly where Cassidy's heart really lay. Farrell stayed as producer, but the mix of material saw the performer's own tastes. Coming through making for a somewhat schisophrenic set which mixed the expected pop ballads with rock-tinged numbers. With 'How Can I Be Sure', Cassidy succeeded where both Rascals and Dusty Springfield had failed, taking the song to # 1 in Britain.'
'Rock Me Baby'. I can imagine that David had a lot of fun singing it on Bob Hope special. The song and the way he looked..Really..amazing. And to think some people called him 'a singer for little girls.'...

But let's return to 'Go Now'. This beautiful song had an interesting history. It was first recorded by a soul singer, Bessie Banks in the USA, in January 1964. The song was written by her ex husband, and both had thought it would be a great hit, it was popular, but it was international hit for someone else. Let's listen first to the original, forgotten version.

The story goes that when Denny Laine heard Bessie Banks's version he told the rest of the band (Moody Blues) they had to record it. And they did it. The song was released 57 years ago, in November 1964. It was being promoted on tv with one of the first purpose- made promotional films in the pop era. The song reached number 1 in the UK in late January 1965. In the USA peaked at nr 10 in February.

The timeless classic. Denny and David knew each other quite well, but I will write about it next time. And I'm leaving my blog and David Cassidy for a few days..
to be continued..
