We Gotta Get Out Of This Place / Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil

A song from Notebook album, released in November 1972. A strange song for TPF, I don't know why it was recorded at all. A great hit for The Animals in 1965, #2 in the UK, also very popular in the USA, especially with United States Armed Forces members stationed in South Vietnam during the Vietnam War..So really strange choice for TPF. On the same  album 'Lookin' Through The Eyes Of Love', 'Storybook Love' and the song which was called 'the Vietnam anthem'..

No, as much as I love DC voice in it,  I agree with someone's comment- 'a heavily pop version of such a dark song'.

I've thought about it while searching for a good title for today's blog..About work, why DC worked so hard? Always. Sometimes he behaved like a true workaholic.  Skinny and slightly built, never very healthy, in 1970-1974 he worked for 16 hours a day, and that constant work, tiredness and stress took their toll. David in 1970 and David in 1974 were like two different persons. I take a lot of screen shots of  DC for the website, and on so many of them he smiles but his eyes are  tired or sad. Of course when he signed the contract for playing Keith Partridge he didn't know what awaited him.. but he worked even more in the 90s..And especially during his Las Vegas years

One of the songs from that time, from 'Old Trick, New Dog' (1978) - 'Show and Tell'

In the 90s DC didn't play many concerts, only 56, he recorded just 3 solo albums, but he appeared more than 800 times on Blood Brothers, wrote his autobiography, had 6 tv roles, co-wrote, and co-produced a  tv series (Ask Harriet), co- wrote 'The Rat Pack Is Back!', created 'At The Copa', and he appeared more than 200 times on various tv programmes, mostly in the USA and in the UK. Some of those appearances were short, but some long interviews, and many times he performed live on them. And who knows how many radio interviews.

Let's watch one very memorable DC's tv appearance from the 90's

And EFX. From November 1996 to December 1998. More than 1500 shows. 10 shows a week. 50 weeks a year. DC already had serious health problems while on Blood Brothers when he tore both his hamstrings and started taking a lot of Advil. Terrible back and neck aches and he didn't want anyone to know that he was suffering.  EFX was even more physically demanding. The show was really dangerous with a lot of special effects .Michael Crawford (DC replaced him) had some serious injuries which resulted in hip replacement operation..David literally risked his life and was injured a few times. Because the stage was made of steel in order to support sets weighing nine tons, DC damaged the nerve in his left foot. He was given cortizone shots between his toes, and the day his contract ended he went in for that foot surgery..And he had a nervous breakdown again, and separated with Sun for several months

This is a great DC interview with Bill Boggs at the Palm in Las Vegas. Not a very good quality, but it's fascinating

So why he worked so hard in the 90s ?  He was a person who when he worked did it 100%, even more. During the Las Vegas years he earned a lot of money, but didn't stop working. DC was never materialistic but I think that the loss of those 8 millions he'd earned in the 70s haunted him.  In the 90's he was at the peak of his abilities, the 70s were very popular and he wanted to use all opportunities he had..
