Shirley Mae Jones - The Sound Of Music

Yes..why Shirley wasn't Maria..Maybe because of Shaun, because of love. Her first son was born in September 1958.

'The Sound of Music', the last Rodgers and Hammerstain's musical which opened on Broadway in November 1959 and got a lot of Tony Awards. But on the other hand Shirley returned to work very quickly, she performed in 'Wish You Were Here!' with Jack in 1959..

She was one of Robert Wise 3 choices for Maria for the film version..She played her on stage at Westbury Music Theatre. And I've found that video.

It must have been hard..after so succesfull  first years of her  career in music films and an Academy Award for a dramatic role in 'Elmer Gentry'. In 1965 she appeared in a movie called 'The Secret Of My Success', and no roles for the next four years. Not so much on tv either. There is a pilot on YT of an unsold tv series from 1965 called 'Dream Wife', with Shirley in the title role..So The Partridge Family was a great opportunity also for her. During the series run she guest starred on many popular tv programmes, like DC in 1971 she was also on Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour ..

But of course her family was always the most important for her. 3 sons and I think 10 grandkids..2 husbands, both dead now. She met Jack Cassidy when she was 20 years old, he was the love of her life.

When David started living with Jack and Shirley in New York in 1968, they got to know each other better. 

DC: 'I developed a good relationship with Shirley. Anyone who knows her knows it would be hard not to like her. She is a wonderful human being' (David Cassidy :'Could It Be Forever?, 2007). So it wasn't a problem for them to work together, they became friends, but first of all Shirley and David were always great professionals...

She sang with the greatest..Frank Sinatra, Gordon MacRae, Pat Boone, Dean Martin..and Jack Cassidy. They recorded a few albums together. And she sang with David of course.

She always smiles, on every pic, laughs a lot during every interview, despite the fact that her life wasn't easy at all. But I think that Shirley is a person for whom the glass is always half full, and she still enjoys her life. She will have another birthday soon.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not writing today's blog just to gossip about DC's private life, it's because I always admired that amazing woman, Kay Ann Lenz. She had birthday yesterday. 3 years younger than David, a few years older than a typical DC's fan.  In the 70s I heard quite a lot about Kay Lenz . She was very popular in Poland, like the rest of the cast of 'Rich Man, Poor Man'. They Said I Changed A Lot..

Let's first listen to something which was not released, why they didn't want David singing that song is a great mystery for me. Listening to his young, sincere, innocent and magical voice is one in a kind moving experience. 'I Just Hated Being In The Show..'

Last week someone posted a screenshot of the article from May 1974, unfortunately without the date or the name of the paper. Written by a popular journalist Roderick Gilchrist, I think it was Daily Express. We can read that this interview took place at London Weekend Television's Building, on the day before the DC's last concert in Manchester.  And David said, "I feel like the door to the cage has just been opened. And, any minute now I'm going to be able to fly right away from my prison.
