Daydreamer / Terry Dempsey

The only song which wasn't chosen by David Cassidy himself for his 1973 album, 'Dreams Are Nuthin' More Than Wishes'  It was the producer's Rick Jarrard proposition. Rick Jarrard, a staff producer of RCA, was responsible for the more pop sound  of the Jefferson Airplane, and the big Jose Feliciano's hit , 'Light My Fire', he  produced Harry Nilsson's albums. And also that wonderful song..

David knew and loved those albums, he was friends with Nilsson.

DC, 'I personally called Rick Jarrard. Rick had produced two or three of my fav albums of all time. (..) I was a huge Nilsson's fan and got to know him very well, eventually singing and writing with him a few years later. I had all Harry's demos because I was such a fan.'

'Rick Jarrard brought 'Daydreamer' to me. After he played to me we looked at each other and I just high-fived him and said, 'That's a smash''. (David Cassidy : Could It Be Forever?, 2007)

So..let's listen to the tape Rick played to David..Let's listen to the original..

Amazing voice, an amazing story, and David's version became number 1 hit in the UK, for 3 weeks in October and November 1973.

Cilla Black and Claude Francois did covers, and let's watch and listen to Claude's version. He was an extremely talented singer and composer ( he wrote a song we all know as 'My Way'), also a drummer and producer. He was popular in Europe and I remember when he died in 1978, at the age of 39.

It's a shame that DC's 'Daydreamer' wasn't a hit for him in the US. In 1976  for a short time the song was on Billboard Hot 100 ..but sung by someone else..

Yes, life is hard, and I feel so sorry for David and even more when we remember that in 1978 Barry Manilow (Barry again..) had a great hit with a song ( I'm not going to put a link to it, no way), very, very similar to "Daydreamer'. David sang a fragment of that Barry's hit during his UK tour in 1985.

Can you believe that those guys who wrote 'Can't Smile Without You' sued George Michael for plagiarism..David must have had a lot of fun singing that medley..

But for us this is of course his song, the lyrics like written specially for us and David. I love what Stephen Porter wrote in 2019 : 'The simple but heartfelt lyrics capture the essence of the singer's distant, lovelorn appeal'.

'I remember April..'

We too..Happy birthday Daydreamer..
