How Can I Be Sure / Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati

The original was recorded 55 years ago, and David's unforgettable cover 5 years later.

Scary. So many years ago, and I remember hearing that song for the very first time like it was only yesterday. Of course I've written about it many times, so why again.

There are 2 reasons. First of all it was exactly 50 years ago when 'How Can I Be Sure' in David Cassidy's interpretation peaked at # 25 in the USA. David had three Top 30 solo hits on the Billboard Hot 100. This song was the second one. And later in 1972 it became the number one hit in the UK and in Ireland..

This is just amazing, I don't know how many times I've listen to it and I'm always under the spell. From the start, that intro, arrangments, David's voice..so powerful and so emotional.

This is a masterpiece, the song itself and the DC's interpretation. When I heard this song for the first time, I didn't know English at all. Nothing. But I knew that this wonderful voice was singing/telling me a story, and I could hear his longing and uncertainty and passion. And how I wanted to hear it again..It's not an exaggeration, but hearing that song changed me. Before I was just a 12 year old child ..but after it I became a teen..

Let's listen to a very nice acoustic cover.

And the second reason. Educational so to speak. Still a lot of fans think the DC's version was the original. No.

David Cassidy : 'Eddie Brigati and Felix Cavaliere from The Young Rascals are two of the great musical influences of my teenage years. I thought they were just about the best American 'pop' band. They were called a pop band only because they had pop hits, but they were heavily into R&B and soul.(..) I love the song, still sing it. It's a singer's song. Eddie Brigati is one of the great American vocalist, in my opinion.' (David Cassidy : Could It Be Forever?, 2007)

So the original, inspired by The Beatles and the real life love story. The Young Rascals.

And the PETITION. Let's make it happen. We are sure DC deserves it.
