Sound Magazine. The David Cassidy's Great Album. Part 1
And yes, I know it was recorded by The Partridge Family. Recently I found out that some fans take my words very literally, so..
51 years ago, in September 1971 this extraordinary album peaked at # 9 on the Billboard 100 chart, and stayed there for 35 weeks. The single from it, 'I Woke Up In Love This Morning / Twenty-Four Hours A Day' was also a hit, peaked at #13. The song from the side B has a special place in my heart.

All the songs with hit potential, I've read only today that it was originally titled 'The New Partridge Family Album', but was renamed just prior to release. It should have had quite another title, maybe, 'The Real And Fabulous David Cassidy'. I'm joking, but it was the first album with the DC's real voice.
David Cassidy : 'In his opinion (Wes Farrell's) my voice had too much power. He wanted my voice to sound light and young and airy. He didn't want any character in it. (..) When we made 'Sound Magazine' I insisted he stopped doing that.' (David Cassidy : Could It Be Forever?, 2007)

It should have been a great David's hit, his personal, his own, but..I've been searching for some the Sound Magazine's reviews from 1971, but first of all there are just adverts published by Bell, and some short notes, maybe also sponsored by the label, like that one from CashBox Magazine (Aug21,1971) :
'The third album from the popular tv family is in the tradition of the first two. The songs bounce right along, a feeling of exuberance is constantly in the air (..) with Shirley Jones and David Cassidy handling the vocals in their inimitable fashions, and with the slick production work of Wes Farrell, how can anything go wrong? It doesn't, and this will be another spectacular best seller for the Family.' I hope he didn't read it.

There is an interesting Billboard's article about the DC's concert, wrote by Phil Burrell, published on July31, 1971. First of all it was about how David looked like, how he was confident and knew what was expected from him, about the audience (screaming and crying), I don't think Phil Burrell knew a lot about TPF's music, but at one moment he was really impressed :
'The evening's highlight was the first public performance of a pair of tunes from his (DC's) untitled album. Backed only by guitarist Steve Ross, he accompanied himself on 'Brown Eyes', a sensitively delivered item with hit potential, and the upbeat 'Rainmaker'..'

Hi Weronika, thank you for showing us the "24 Hours a Day" video! I love this song, and I love the way David sings it here. I just wish though that they could have had them do the whole song in this video, instead of starting on the second verse. Thank you so very much again for doing such a great blog for David, and us, his fans!
