That's the Way It Is With You / Harriet Schock

In October 1973, two David Cassidy's albums were released. One very successful (in the UK), called 'Dreams Are Nuthin' More Than Wishes', and that other one, the last Partridge Family's studio album, not successful at all, called 'Bulletin Board'.

'Dreams', the first real DC's recording, his first own album, and 'Bulletin Board'...so different from the previous TPF's records, more mature sound, less pop, more rock, more R&B influenced. More like David's solo album than TPF's.

It's not easy to write about Bulletin Board, because fans have different opinions on it. I think it was a bold attempt to change the sound of TPF, made in very unfavorable cirumstances. Everybody knew that it was probably the last album, the lead singer was tired and burned out, and wasn't on speaking terms with the producer, the album was arranged and produced in fact not by Wes Farrell, but by John Bahler,  Mike Melvoin didn't take part in making of this album..even the studio was not the same as usual, and last but not least 1973 was one of those years when the music scene changed rapidly.

Bulletin Board comercially was a disaster, but it's a very good album, and now we appreaciate it even more. David's voice, so different from the previous recordings, so fabulous and mature, even if sometimes he sounds ..like he wasn't very interested in some of those songs. (This is my opinion of course).

David Cassidy didn't write about Bulletin Board in his autobiography, not a single word. Only : 'Throughout the 1973-1974 television season The Partridge Family, for the first time in its history, was without a hit record. The producers just refused to change with the times. I lost a lot of sleep over it.' (David Cassidy : Could It Be Forever?, 2007)

But of course he was always a pro and gave 100% of his talent. And today for whatever reason I can't rid of one of the songs from Bulletin Board. The last one on that album. That's the Way It Is With You, wrote by Harriet Schock, an American singer and a Grammy nominated songwriter. It was her debut, her first ever song recorded.

There is something irresistible the way he sings that song, so casually, effortleslly, as  if he was joking about himself and this girl..about that 'endless hunger' and 'how much I need you and how much longer', like that relationship and that song was a joke..I love the way DC sings it. The last song from the last Partridge Family's album. 'That's the way it is with you baby..you reach down in my soul..'
