Mae / Gary Montgomery
'Mae' has been playing today in my head. I've checked and discovered that actually I've never written anything about it. Many times about the album, Dreams Are Nuthin' More Than Wishes', recorded 50 years ago, but not a single entry about 'Mae'.
Written by Gary Montgomery. Not easy to find info about this particular Gary. According to rateyourmusic.com and allmusic.com he was from Canada, born in 1943, died in 2005. In the 60s he was a member of the band called The Daltons Boys, and he wrote some songs for The Turtles, so it's a strong DC connection. Flo & Eddie, Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan, the original, founding members of The Turtles were David's friends in the 70s. And they sang on his RCA albums..
David Cassidy called 'Mae' little and charming. But it's not difficult to understand why John Lennon was jealous when DC sang it May Pang, one afternoon in 1973.

When I heard it for the first time, and it was I think about 10 years ago, I thought to myself, 'Wow!' and listened again, it's so short, just 2.54. Truly amazing, great arrangement, the music is played just to introduce the DC's voice (if I can put it this way), and later keep the pace with it. Young David Cassidy's sensual voice is the most important instrument on this song. I wonder what the DC fans had thought about it in 1973, especially about the lyrics.
1973 was also a perfect time for 'Mae', when the next year DC performed it in London, the song sounded different, of course it was live concert for thousands of screaming girls (mostly), we can hear David pleading fans to push back... The song rocks, there is no tenderness we can hear in the 1973 album's recording.

He again sang it live, many years later, in 2008, just for fans, I don't know, maybe he shouldn't. But of course fans were happy and sang along with him.
