'You don't know how many times..'

He knew of course how he was loved. It was love at the first sight on a global scale. There were a lot of pretty boys in the early 70's, actors or singers, but there was something so special about David Cassidy..and yes, many wanted just to touch or to hold him, he couldn't forget about security nearly to the rest of his days. He was mobbed, sometimes physically attacted by..boys, fans were screaming and fighting with each other to be as close to him as possible, tried to rip off his clothes..his hair.

David Cassidy said in 2008,

'people loving you to a point where they want to have a piece of you for their wall and they can love you so much they want to tear your clothes off or tear you apart.'

We can read in Jackie in December 1972, 'David has such an effect on girls that they almost come out of the chimney at his house! Girls have turned up on the set posing as journalists and then halfway through the interview have leapt upon the unsuspecting David. (..) He is philosophical about it all. He likes his fans and he likes girls.' What a surprise.

Of course he had also a lot of fun and we envy those lucky ladies, but I really admire David Cassidy that in spite of those many difficult, scary and dangerous situations, all his life he was so kind to his fans. And don't tell me that sometimes he was rude. maybe he was, but he was only one, and fans..millions. And every fan wanted a hug, an autograph, a pic and to tell him how much he was loved.

Let's return to 'Cherish'. Who would have predicted that this song, and it was the first solo DC's single released in October 1971, would turn out to be the most important one. And his only one solo Top 10 hit in his native country. The curse of success at the very beginning of your career..

The song was written by Terry Kirkman, who died on September 23 this year, at the age of 83. He recorded 'Cherish' with  his group Association, in 1966, it was #1 for 3 weeks.

Wes Farrell chose that first David's hit very well, his version was different than the original from the 60s. And actually a lot of DC's young fans had no idea it was a cover. 'Cherish' peaked at #9 on Billboard Hot 100 in November 1971, and was #1 for one week on the Adult Contemporary chart. It was also David's first big hit in the UK.

David performed 'Cherish' in every decade. After all those years the song and the word 'cherish' acquired special meaning for David and his fans. This is our song.
