David Cassidy in London. 1987

I haven't watched this interview for some time, so it was such a pleasure to see it again yesterday. Twice. Just to hear David Cassidy's laugh. Incredible.

When asked by Johnatan Ross why he accepted the role in 'Time', DC's first answer was, 'Money'. Everybody laughed, it was meant to be a joke, but it was true of course.

'Time' was written by Dave Clark, from the band Dave Clark Five. A musical about a rock star, Chris Wilder, transported with his band to the High Court of the Universe. There were a lot of songs, and very impressive special effects. The role of Chris was very demanding vocally and physically. The show premiered at the Dominion Theatre in April 1986, with Cliff Richard as Chris Wilder. And after several months Cliff had enough. We can see him with DC in this very interesting video.

There was a poster with DC's pic and info that he would be the star of the show only for 3 months. The story about how DC got the role in 'Time' is very interesting in itself.

The musical was very successful, but the script was awful, like 'Sunday school lesson, greeting card philosophy full of flower-power platitudes. A show for children, tourist with little English and people young at heart' (from a review).
When Cliff Richard resigned, the producers wanted John Travolta to take the role, but he had other commitments, and turned down the offer. Dave Clark wanted to wait for Travolta when he would be avaliable later, take over the role and debut with the show on Broadway. Meanwhile Clark badly needed someone charismatic and good enough to be the star of the show, someone willing to work very hard for a very short replacement..
DC knew about all the curcuimstances and decided to sell himself very dearly. He was broke, had only debts, but he and his manager, Melanie Green turned down the first three offers made to him by producers. It paid off, at the end he got what he wanted. He came to London at the beginning of March 1987, and very demanding rehearsals started.

Another great video. It's so moving to see David and Stephanie Lawrence together on stage.

'The box office will tell..'. No worries. David's fans were coming to see him in London from the farthest corners of the UK. And from Europe. It was a great opportunity for fans in this part of the world to see David Cassidy on stage,

After his debut in 'Time', on April 13th, 1987, a lot of articles appeared. The titles spoke for themselves. 'Timeless Cassidy'. 'David Rocks On', 'Time Is On David Side', 'Roses As David Make A Comeback'. In many interviews David said how he was lucky and grateful having so supportive and great fans.

He also became a regular in tabloids, because nearly every night he was seen at the trendy West End clubs. David worked very hard and partied very hard, if he did something it was always for 100%, even more. It was demanding but also very happy time for him. His contract was extended from three to seven months, to October 1987, and what's more important David Cassidy was in love. With Sue Shifrin. They were very happy together. In London. In 1987.

Once more David Cassidy and his wonderful co-star, Stephanie Lawrence.
