I really love when an entry of my blog starts a conversation, or encourages fans to share some info or memories. That way we all learn something more about DC.
It's like doing together a giant jigsaw puzzle with David's portrait, and each of us can add a missing piece. Together We Are Better. And after last entry, I've got some info about DC in Spain. In 1975.
Let's start with this outstanding, beautiful video made by Araceli. Those pics are mostly from 1973, but not all of them.
We still can't take our eyes off him..

The story is a little bit complicated. In 1975 DC recorded his first album for RCA, 'The Higher They Climb, The Harder They Fall'. It was released in July 1975, in the USA, Spain, the UK, Germany, Turkey, Australia, Italy, Greece, Japan, France, India, Argentina, South Africa, Peru and Canada. 'The Higher They Climb, The Harder They Fall' was a success in the UK, Europe and South Africa. In the UK charted at #22. David Cassidy was voted the Male Vocalist of the Year in Germany. In August 1975, the single 'I Write The Songs/Get It Up For Love' became # 11 in the UK. 'Darlin'' was a hit in South Africa in July.

The album got mixed reviews, mostly good. David's vocals was praised along with his courage and determination. But the album didn't take off in the USA. There was no promotion to speak of. DC personally travelled all around the country. He was trying to interest radio people and critics with his new music. He didn't do a promotional tour, he didn't want to play old hits, and he didn't want an audience of screaming teenage girls. He hoped he would find new, older fans.
He was in London in June 1975. There are 3 radio interviews listed on the Website - for BBC at Broadcasting House (Tony Blackburn), Capital London (Michael Aspel), and Radio Luxembourg (Peter Powell). DC appeared on 2 TV programs (Thames TV and BBC), pre-recorded 'I Write The Songs' for The Top Of The Pops. In July he was in Holland (1 TV program, and press interviews), Germany (TV) and France (promotion and having a good time). And in Spain.
All songs on 'The Higher They Climb, The Harder They Fall' are outstanding, they are the proof of his musical and vocal talent, and I love all of them.
Already in June in London it was noticed that DC couldn't go anywhere without security, and he also had his security men in Spain.
And two days ago I got 2 articles about DC in Spain in July 1975 (thank you Encarni) and it wasn't a very nice read. One article was from the 70s and another one was published in November 2017. According to them, in July 1975, in Spain, David Cassidy was boycotted by the press.
At the time a big music festival was held in Alicante, and most music journalists and music critics were there. It was planned that DC met the press in Benidorm, a popular tourist city near Alicante. But David already at the Alicante Airport was disappointed because no fans were waiting for him, and he didn't want to pose for a few photographers who were there. It was rumored that he was afraid of kidnappers. The photographers followed him and DC was angry when they wanted to take some pics in the restaurant on the outskirts of Benidorm, (he obviously wanted to eat something in my opinion), he quickly left the restaurant and was an hour late for the press conference. And when he arrived Spanish journalists didn't like his behaviour, his smiles etc. There was a great quarrel and no questions were asked and no pics taken. And David was booed and he left.
Poor David. He never was a jaded superstar. Everything looks for me like some kind of misunderstanding, the lack of basic communication, and this visit was simply very poorly prepeared.
It's maybe not so very important, but now we know that DC was in Spain twice in the 70s, and I can understand at last why in 1985 DC didn't appear on Spanish TV (and he was everywhere) with The Last Kiss..But his hit was promoted in Spain, and the video was shown.
