I Never Saw You Coming / David Cassidy, Jay Gruska, Bill Mumy and David Jolliffe

Thanks to Lanie Bray from David Cassidy-Greatest Fans Group, I've been listening today to the music from the CD called 'The Best Of David Cassidy', released in Japan, in 1991.

It was released without DC's consent, those songs weren't his best, and what's more in 1991 he played and recorded completely different music. The songs on 'The Best Of David Cassidy' was recorded in 1979.

David Cassidy's voice in the late 70s when he was 27, 28, 29 years old... Deeper and huskier, mature and sensual, he should have recorded one album after another. It was just a TV show, but I think David was very pleased with how the audience reacted to his singing. November 27, 1977.  The Partridge Family/ My Three Sons Reunion. Thansgiving  Day Special.

In 1978 David did backup vocals on 4 of his friends' albums. He also started working on his own new album, with a very known music producer Ken Mansfield. At the time Mansfield's career was in decline, and at first he wasn't happy that he was to work with a former teen idol. Many years later Ken Mansfield wrote about David in his autobiography, "It took me about 10 minutes after meeting him to realize my original opinion about him was 100% wrong. He had a super sense of material and this wonderful voice to allow him to face any vocal challenge."

Lanie Bray also have written about Bill Mumy. Bill was born in 1954 and was first of all a Shaun Cassidy's friend (even performed on tour with Shaun). He started his career in the 60s as a child actor, (quite a lot of tv guest appearances, and of course 'Lost In Space'), but he is also a talented guitarist, songwriter, singer and composer. 'I Never Saw You Coming' was a song by DC and Jay Gruska recorded for DC's last RCA album in 1976. In 1979 he recorded it again, with a little help from his friends, Bill Mumy and David Jolliffe, another talented actor and musician. Btw. David Jolliffe played a very small but memorable role on The Partridge Family. S3 E1. He played one of Goose's friends.

And last but not least, Lanie Bray has posted what Bill Mumy wrote in November 2017. It was really moving.

"RIP, David Cassidy.
I've known David since before The Partridge Family. David and I butted heads sometimes, but he was like an extended family member in a way. We recorded music together, played softball together, did some crazy shit together in the 70s, went to gigs together and mostly hung out at Shaun's house for holidays. David always had a 28" waistline! He was a really good singer, okay guitarist, and he loved animals. I hope he finds the peace he needed.."
