Double Love Seats..

A catchy title today.

David Cassidy spent a week in Japan, in March 1974. He arrived on March 21, and left on a plane to Hawaii at 10 p.m., on March 28.

'Big In Japan' is playing in my head, it's one of those songs once they stuck you can't rid of them easily. Recorded by German band, Alphaville, in 1984, it was a big hit in Europe, it's still played on our Polish radio sometimes. Btw the lyrics of that song is about drugs, and the phrase 'Big In Japan' is an idiom used to describe an artist who has success in a foreign but not in a native country.

So I'm singing a little bit and thinking how really big was David in Japan. In 1974. Maybe a song first. In an interview for Japanese radio, DC said that this song had been recorded before he started his World Tour.

Judging by the number of David's albums released in Japan, he was a mega star there. All his solo albums recorded in the 70s were released in Japan, including 'Gettin' It In The Street. What's more DC's last RCA album was released on schedule there, in November 1976, and it contained a double-sided insert with Japanese liner notes and English lyrics. But it's not everything. In 1974 four (!!) compilations were released in Japan, 'David Cassidy: Gold Disc' (Japan only), 'David Cassidy: New Gold Disc' (Japan only), 'David Cassidy - Golden Double Series' (2 LP set, Japan only), and  'David Cassidy's Greatest Hits'. This is really impressive.

'Romance' was also released in Japan, and DC's self-titled album from 1990. And of course in 1991, CD called 'Best of David Cassidy' was released in Japan, by Curb Records. DC recorded those songs in 1979. Ken Mansfield, a famous producer who worked with DC on that material, explained a little bit in conversation with Jane Reaburn (our webmaster), why this album wasn't realesed in the 70s.

When DC arrived in Japan on March 21, 1974, thousands of fans, mostly school girls were waiting for him at the airport. Don Murfet wrote in awe how Japanese police and security escorted David. The part about DC tour in Japan starts from page 250

And 'Double Love Seats'? It's from the only one article about DC in Japan we have on the website. Actually it was published before he came there, on March 18. "Tokyo. David Cassidy of the 'Partridge Family' will arrive here Thursday for his first concert tour in Japan. The young American singer is to make six appearances in Tokyo and Osaka during his one-week stay.(..) Tickets cost 2.500, 2.000 or 1.500 yen for adults. 1.000 yen for teen-age students with proper ID, and 4.500 yen for double love seats'...
