'For The Love Of Darling David.."
I have a very special collection of the original articles published in the UK in the week after David Cassidy's White City Stadium concert. Most of them are on the website (scans), but it's something absolutely different and very special, heartbreaking even, to have the originals.
Maybe something from 'Cassidy Live!' first.

How it happened that I have this unusual collection? In 1974 my close friend B. was 13 and lived in Wiltshire. She was a fan, loved David but going for his concert was out of the question. But later that year, she was in London visiting her family. And for whatever reason (maybe there was a strike, not unusual thing in the UK in the 70s) large piles of newspapers were lying on the street. The Times, Daily Mirror, Daily Mail, The Sun, Daily Express...She cut out all the articles about David from them.
When I visited her 2 years ago, she told me she wanted to get rid off of them. I took everything home, to Poland, leaving behind me some clothes and shoes (had only one cabin suitcase), but it was worth it.

It's a shame that nothing was written about the music. Regardless what was happening there it was a great concert.
I'll not show you the whole pics because Daily Mirror published very close photographs of first-aid people trying to rescue Bernadette. Daily Express interviewed her parents and took pics of them sitting on a bed in her bedroom, with David's posters everywhere. It's still so heartbreaking to read.
Only the Times tried to cool down the emotions and the facts were reported. May 27th, "One girl in a serious condition and 13 with minor injures were taken to hospital last night after the crowd at a concert featuring David Cassidy surged forward and crushed dozens of girls against stage barriers at the White City Stadium, in London (..) The hospital said most of the girls taken were hysterical, and suffering from minor cuts and bruises. Four were admitted and one of them was in the intensive care unit."
Daily Mirror published a lot of letters sent by those attending the concert. "As the tickets weren't numbered it was first come first served for places. Fans like my daughter were scared to move in case their lost their place after queuning from 9 a.m. Before more teenagers are crushed and hurt let's make sure every ticket sold is allocated a seat or place number."
"No one is to blame after the White City concert (..) I think promoter Mel Bush just put too much store on human nature. He couldn't have known the girls in the middle would get into such a frenzy.."
Chrissie Hynde wrote something similar for New Musical Express, "I don't know what need it was that each of the 35,000 girls tried to fulfill that day, but they all went doing it the same way. The feeling of hysteria was so heavy that entering that stadium was like being gripped in a vice."
