Play It Again, Sam
Sam Hyman has birthday today.
He looked older than David when they were young, but actually it was David who was born a few weeks earlier. Sam in Los Angeles, David on the other side of the country, Sam's father's name was also Jack. Both their fathers died when their sons were young. Sam was 19, David 26.
In 2012 Mark Wyckoff interviewed Sam Hyman and wrote a great article to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this wonderful friendship, so important for both of them. David Cassidy and Sam Hyman met in 1962..

So many wonderful stories, so generously shared with us. The story of their friendship, school years, Laurel Canyon, later David's stardom and that insane time when he was the most popular world teen idol. He wanted to have Sam by his side, a friend he could always trust, and Sam too had his share of fun and fame..
When it was over, in 1974, Sam had to start from the beginning, he had no money and no job. It was so hard watching David's way down. 1976 was especially difficult, David tried so hard but fans weren't interested in his RCA albums, his new music. He couldn't sleep, he drank heavily and tried every drug. And Sam moved out because he couldn't stand David's 'new friends', and couldn't watch how his dear friend was killing himself every day.

This friendship was for better and for worse, for life, to the end, unconditional and for ever, so special for both of them.
I return to Mark Wyckoff's article very often, wonderful read, great pics and last but not least what a smart title. 'Play it again, Sam'. Yes, we want to listen to this story all over again, and I'm so happy for those fans who met Sam in California, in April this year.
'Play it again, Sam..' From David Cassidy's favourite film. Play it again, David..
