David Cassidy Live 1971. Holmdel And Monticello

From the very beginning Ruth Aarons wanted David to play concerts. There was real money to be made, and already in the winter of 1970 Ruth made the first booking for him, for $8000.

Not bad for someone who never really played concerts. Only in his high school band (DC played drums) and some garage bands. He sang on Broadway, but he had 2 or 3 short musical numbers singing in duet and he was just a member of the cast, not a solo act. It was something completely different going out on stage alone, and singing  for thousands of fans who wanted to see and hear a favourite star, for girls so in love with him.

In 1971 DC's schedule was insane. So much responsibility and stress. Working non stop filming and promoting the show, recording and promoting TPF's music. And on weekends he was playing concerts, the first one on March 26th, and the last one on December 5th. He only didn't play concerts in April (but there were rehearsals) and of course when he had his gall bladder operation.

May 1971 was especially difficult for David. The first signs appeared that his body had enough. After the concert on May 16th he woke up at night screaming because of horrible pain. He passed a gallstone. He got Demerol and was put on a drastic diet, after which he got down to 112 pounds (51 kg)..DC on a diet of toast and oatmeal was working harder than ever before. In May he played only 3 concerts, but he also recorded 'Sound Magazine', and the production of the new season started. Even journalists were writing that he worked too much..One wrote after DC's concert on May 14th, that "The 21-year-old star of television's Partridge Family looked like the picture of the collapse". And very often on the days he played concerts he had other responsibilities, meetings and interviews.

In 1971 David Cassidy played 35 concerts. We have quite a lot of reviews and articles about DC's very successful concert tour that year, also some pics, but ONLY ONE set list and ONLY ONE audio recording.

Some of his concerts that year became legendary, but only Betty Ernst recorded and shared with us one DC's whole concert. August 14, 1971. Garden State Arts Center, Holmdel, NJ. It was just his second concert after the break (gall bladder operation), and even that DC in 1971 was accompanied on stage by some very good musicians (brass and rhythm line and Steve Ross), and some great backing singers, we can hear how hard he was working and did his best.

Those recordings are quite good and very moving.

And one more song. Btw. Holmdel is only 40 miles from West Orange.

In 1971 David Cassidy played for the first time in Saratoga and Albuquerque (I will write about those concerts tomorrow), and at Monticello Raceway in September. I've chosen this concert because we have some great pics on the website, and some info, that the benefits from that concert went to Monticello Hospital.
