David Cassidy - The Singer of The Year

So far I haven't written enough about David Cassidy's popularity in Germany. He had a lot of fans there. Some of them very special and important.

Tina Funk started 'The Just David Fan Club' in Germany, in May 1974. She published a newsletter in German and in 1975 Tina's friend, Urda Voss, started a sister club, 'The David Cassidy Fan Club' with the newsletter in English. It was called 'Da-idy Newsletter' and Urda's club was changed later into the Official Club for Europe.

In 1981 Cathy Ortiz decided to start her fan club in America, and she called it 'The Da-idy Fan Club'. When she learnt about Urda's club, they decided to meet and work together, and they met in Calgary, in Canada (and some other fans too), in June 1982, because at the time DC performed in 'Tribute' at Stage West Dinner Theatre there. You can read the story of DC's fan clubs here, and also see some great pics of Tina, Urda and Cathy with David Cassidy.

DC played concerts in West Germany in 1973 and in 1974. His albums were released there, he appeared on popular German Music Shows, Musikladen and Disco'75. But the most important thing is that David Cassidy was often written about in German teen magazine, 'Bravo'. Fans in the US and Canada had a lot of teen mags, in the UK there were David Cassidy Official Magazine, Jackie and others, but teenagers in my part of Europe, in the countries behind the Iron Curtain had only 'Bravo'.

Of course even in East Germany 'Bravo' was forbidden, but this fact only increaced our curiosity (and prices of 'Bravo' on the black market). You can't imagine how this weekly mag was famous among teens in communist countries. First of all because of sex; in each issue there was an exciting photo story about teens and their first sexual experiences (if I can put it this way), also a lot of articles about teen idols, popular singers, pop groups, actors, and last but not least there were a lot of pics.

And actually I saw David Cassidy for the first time in my life in 'Bravo'. From time to time someone brought a 'Bravo' copy to school and we all wanted to see it, of course we couldn't read it, no one knew German, so we admired pics and tried to understand anything (somehow we had no problems to understand photo stories). So one day, maybe it was 1974 or 1975 I saw in 'Bravo' David Cassidy's pic...And I fell in love like millions of other girls all around the world.

Readers of 'Bravo' voted David Cassidy the best singer in 1973, 1974 and 1975. Even in 1976 he was voted as the 3d the most popular singer.

When DC had his great comeback in 1985, he sang his new hits on many popular German music shows. A film crew from Bravo TV came to London to record an interview with David.

What a shame DC didn't play concerts in West Germany in 1985. It happened that as a result of improbable coincidences I spent some unforgettable time there, in November and December of 1985..
