David And Kay in 'Voice of The Turtle'

I've wanted to write about something else, but after seeing this pic on Pinterest I've changed my mind of course. The pic is not very well and there is no date, but I'm sure it was taken 45 years ago, in summer 1979, when David Cassidy and his wife, Kay Lenz performed together on stage. For the first and the last time.

Maybe a song first. DC co-written it with Jay Gruska for his last RCA album, and recorded it again 3 years later, with a little help of his friends (Bill Mumy and David Jolliffe). Someway for me this song is about David and Kay

Do you know that David and Kay together appeared on Good Morning America, on July 23, 1979, probably also to promote this play, 'Voice of The Turtle', and talk about working together. But this tape doesn't exist anymore.

David wanted to work with Kay, in a movie or a theatre, but his wife wasn't so sure about it. In June 1977, just 2 months after their wedding, she said in an interview, "David can think of us working together more easily than I can. Work was always the one place I had to for myself, the one thing I never let boyfriends in on. I would never even let them on the set to watch me work. With David, it's going to have been different. I'm trying to learn that you don't give something up just because you share it with someone.". Meanwhile in some interviews DC was talking about a mutual friend who wrote a script for them..

Already at the end of 1978 it was obvious that Man Undercover would not be continued, and in 1979 DC was working on a new album, but nothing came of it, the album wasn't released. Kay's career slowed down. 'Passage', the film she made in 1978 was a disastrous flop. Suddenly she had as not much work as she used to had, and only on TV. They still attended events together, but it was obvious they had problems. Also financial.

In summer 1979 David and Kay decided to work together at last. I think one of the reasons was money. When asked why, David answered that they always had wanted to work together, and, "We are having a good time, and for me that's what most important'.

So for a few days in summer of 1979 David Cassidy and Kay Lenz appeared together in a play called Voice Of The Turtle. From July 30 to August 4 at Falmouth Playhouse, MA and from August 6 to August 11 at Westport Country Playhouse, CT. The play was a war romance. We can read in a review, "David Cassidy gives a smooth performance, but despite his age and the part ( a man who had lived with a woman in Paris and was already a sergeant by 1943), still comes across with a little of the college kid in him. It detracts very little, however, and he plays particulary well and in good stage equilibrium with Miss Lenz, his wife off-stage."

For David it was his first role on stage after 10 years. Quite a lot of his fans came to see him. I love what Jeanne David wrote in a review,

"..when Cassidy lifted his truly beautiful voice in a few bars of the 'Londonderry Air and successfully reached for a few notes sung in flawless falsetto, his thrilled audience murmurs those wordless sounds that speak worlds beyond mere approval"..We can imagine..
