Going To Liverpool. "Tell Me It's Not True"

After many years in David Cassidy's life appeared the next Liverpool connection.

In June 1993, Bill Kenwright (he died in October 2023), a very known English producer, asked DC to come to New York to see a musical called 'Blood Brothers'. The play, written by Willy Russell, was based in Liverpool, it was originally a school play for one of Liverpool's high school, later Willy Russell himself wrote a score, and 'Blood Brothers' as musical, premiered at the Liverpool Playhouse, in 1983. The show later was shown in London and at last on Broadway, where debuted in April 1993.

But it wasn't a great success in America and the British cast had to leave anyway. So Bill Kenwright first persuaded Petula Clark to accept the role of Mrs Johnston. He wanted David to be the Narrator, but DC from the start knew which role he wanted and should play. Mickey Johnston. Bill Kenwright agreed, and the idea appeared that maybe Shaun would play the second brother. Shaun Cassidy started just a new career as a screenwriter and producer, he was busy and what's more just recovering from a painful divorce, and at first he refused, but David was tenacious. The role of Eddie Johnston was Shaun's last on stage.

For David and Shaun it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to work, and first of all spend a lot of time together. To get to know each other on the adult level. They both moved to New York, they saw each other every day, working, eating meals together, talking about everything..

For David Cassidy the role of Mickey Johnston was a comeback he was dreaming of for many years. A seroius, dramatic role which showed both his acting and vocal skills. And each night there was a standing ovation in the theatre.

'Tell Me It's Not True'. It happened while my younger sister (who lives abroad) visited me a few years ago. I was writing my blog for couples of months and she wanted to know something about David, and why I became suddenly a fan. We were walking a lot and talking, also about DC, we watched together a few TPF's episodes. And 'The Last Session', it was very emotional for me watching with her. She said, "I can't imagine how hard watching it is for fans.." And I showed her some videos. 'Tomorrow', and "I Write the Songs". And David with Shaun on 'Regis and Kathie Lee'. My sister was astonished how DC looked like in 1993, and she was smiling watching this great interview, I could tell that she liked Shaun better, she was still smiling when Shaun was singing, when they were singing together, but when it was David's turn..the look on her face and I heard her whisper, 'Oh, yes.." That was the best comment.
